Pete relaxed his arm as he moved it away from the gun in the back of his pants and pulled the plate closer too him, he hadn't exactly expected to meet a ghost here of all places, especially one that would resent him having dinner with this woman.
He turned his attention towards Maddie and smiled as he heard her mutter under her breath "Hey, don't sweat it, I think it's cool you have someone looking out for you, even if he is a corpse and he isn't the first father figure I have had to deal with, true it was when I was 14, but I won him around, this guy should be easier" Pete joked as he picked up his fork and tucked into the meal.
"So is he like this with most guests you have or is it just the ones he takes a particular dislike too?" Pete asked in between mouthfuls of spaghetti

Giving a sigh in relief, Maddie sat down with him and watched him start to eat. Her expression lightened and a small laugh escaped. The emerald depths of her eyes twinkled as she bit her bottom lip and then replied.
"Well, actually.. your getting off easy. I've seen them do some pretty rough stuff before.. Causing men to spill their coffee downstairs, tipping books on to their heads, knocking me off ladders right into their arms... Things that look innocent but arent. They seem to think a woman shouldn't be alone in the world and they have some.... old fashioned thoughts about that sort of thing. Jeb is the worst."
Picking up her own fork, she took a bite and then blinked.
"OH, I forgot the wine."
Jumping to her feet she ran to get hte glasses and then carried them back. Eying his beer, she tilted her head and frowned.
"Maybe you would prefer another beer? I know men aren't really into wine but I love it with Italian food."
Returning to the fridge, she pulled out another long neck and set it before him. Then, sliding back into her seat, she grinned.
"So... How long have you been in New Orleans? Or better yet... What brings you to New Orleans? You obviously know that I live here but.... I assume your recovering from your accident? Are you planning to reenlist or do you have other plans for the rest of your life?"

Pete listened to what Maddie had to say about the other guys who had been fortunate enough to meet the elusive trio, even though they may not have known about it. He grinned as she explained how he got off lightly. "I've got to agree with him on one point there, No-one should be alone, especially in these uncertain times" Pete remarked hoping she wouldn't think he was like the three stooges.
He watched as she got up to get the wine and was quite relived when she suggested a beer instead, even though his Grandma used to own a vineyard he was never particularly fond of wine, he accepted the beer and took a swig, putting the bottle down he took a mouthful of food as she began to ask questions about him.
"Where to start, OK, I came to New Orleans after being Discharged from the Air force, I had the opportunity to return home but there are a couple of things I need to take Care off here first, there are a couple of Hunters around here, sort of old friends if you like. They normally move around but I heard they had finally settled here. Thats why I chose here" Pete replied, he wasn't looking forward to answering the next part but if this was going to go anywhere she had a right to know.
"The Accident?, I was the cause of it not the victim" Pete said as he pushed the spaghetti around the plate "Remember earlier I asked if you had heard of a guy called Jason Roberts, He was my best mate in the Air force, we'd been through training together and served in the same squadron. To cut a long story short he paid the consequences for my Stupidity, The court martial fount me innocent, but I was told by my superior it would be best if I Just took off, officially I'm reported as AWOL but they aren't pursuing me, if they were my mates would have turned me in long ago. So, I guess if the worst comes to the worst I could be called up at any time, though something major would have to happen before that happened" Pete finished and realized he had just been pushing the food around his plate.

Listening to Pete talk, Madison could hear what he was not saying as much as what he was saying. He obviously blamed himself for what had happened to his friend and she had a feeling that nothing she said would make a dent in his self guilt. However, ever the compassionate person, she had to try.
"I'm sorry.... that sounds truly awful. I can't even begin to imagine what your going through but sometimes things happen for reasons we don't understand. Things aren't always in our control as much as we like to believe they are...."
Tilting her head, she leaned her chin into a slender palm and gazed at him thoughtfully.
"Let me ask you this... Do you think your friend would want to see you like this? Would want you to beat yourself up in this manner? Accidents happened whether we are on alert or not.... I have a feeling your friend would probably be the sort that would actually kick your butt for blaming yourself....."
Then, realizing she probably over stepped her bounds, she tried to smile and sat back.
"And listen to me.... My mother always said I did have a nosey nose. My apologies for bringing up something that was no doubt painful. I promise I'm not normally so.... well, actually.. I CAN"T promise that but...."
Wrinkling her nose impishly, she tried to lighten the moment.
"I should probably warn you now.... I tend to talk alot."

Pete listened to what Maddie had to say a lot of it was what other people had told him before and he always agreed with them and he knew what she was saying made sense, but still what he saw and what he did that day would haunt him for the rest of his life.
He listen to her continue to talk and had to laugh when she mentioned about Jason trying to kick his ass, it was true that he would have been kicking his butt if he saw him like this and they'd probably get into a massive brawl about it, that was the way it was any sign of weakness was kicked out of you, he knew that, he was about to say as much when Maddie started speaking again
Using his own hands he cupped his hands around her to try and reassure her that everything was all good and that she didn't need to worry, but god the woman was relentless, worse than his Aunt when he got in to that fight in when he was in Junior high.
Pete laughed as Maddie wrinkled her nose "Hey, Don't sweat it, seriously I like a woman who's not afraid to speak her mind, it makes talking on my part a hell of a lot easier" He laughed "What about you, for a start where did you manage to cook like this, you could teach my aunt a thing or two about cooking and she's half Italian" Pete ended as he took another bite of the food
