It seemed his...apology, was enough to settle some of the friction between them. Her demeanor softened, and she spoke to him in a more forthcoming manner, even comparing Azrael to her husband. He sympathized with Max, seeing how difficult it truly was to deal with Lexi. He'd barely been here five minutes, and already he'd had to bite down the desire to hurt the girl. She was just so...infuriatingly human, and stubborn, and headstrong...
While Lexi went on, finally reaching out to him emotionally, Azrael couldn't help but soften his resolve slightly. 'See?' Jasper chastised. 'If you want to get anywhere with her, you need to be NICE, not pissy. If you haven't realized it by now, people tend to expect a give-and-get exchange. So whatever you put out, she's going to return. That includes the way she reacts too. So try to be a little more...cooperative.'
'And how could I be more...cooperative?' Azrael briskly questioned back, not even attempting to mask the impatient tone of his thoughts. 'Given the severity of the situation, I think I'm being just as cooperative as you'd normally expect, okay?' What did Jasper expect him to act like, an angel?
Jasper chuckled lightly. 'Well, duh. You ARE supposed to be an angel! Why don't you try acting like one, and be all innocent and pure?' Though Jasper found humor in the statement, Azrael did not.
'Innocent and pure? Oh please!' Azrael could help but laugh darkly in his mind. 'You know me better than that Jasper. When have I ever even shown the potential to be one of those stuck up, pretentious, fuckups?'
Jasper didn't answer, but Azrael could tell how amused he was at his reaction. All angels were stuck up, and pretentious, and many other things that he probably wouldn't even want to get started on right now.
Focusing back on Lexi, he decided to submit to her request, and indulge a little bit about himself. "My name is Azrael. I...I...well, I honestly don't know where to begin past that," he admitted truthfully. "The circumstances that eventually led to the...conception of your bloodline, well they were extremely complicated. And I'm in the same fucked up boat as you." He stopped momentarily, taking a deep breath. "I just found out about you, about your whole damn bloodline, from a demon I gutted a few days ago. So it's not like I've actually known about you for as long as you probably thought I have. I...I came as soon as I knew."
It was like several centuries of pain and insecurity was creeping up on him; the only way he knew how to deal with it was to push it away, and try to ignore it. But this wasn't just something he could ignore. This...this went deeper, and its implications reached into the grand scheme of things.
"And don't even dare compare me to those pompous bastards..." His tone had hardened, almost taking on a hateful edge. He'd thought back to the girl's insinuations of the angels her friends had dealt with, and how she almost liken him to them. "Yeah, most angels are assholes, and I can assure you I'm nothing like them. I want nothing to do with them and their damn holy agenda!"

So it's not like I've actually known about you for as long as you probably thought I have. I...I came as soon as I knew."
As the angel started talking, Lexi tried to digest it all. He sounded angry, bitter and a bit confused himself. The fact that he had a family was evidently not a welcome one and she again had to tamp down a bit of temper. It wasn't his fault.. well, not REALLY.. If what he said was true, then he'd truly had no idea that he had sired a child or that his blood was walking the earth. If what Raze had said was true, then she was probably lucky he wasn't trying to kill her too.
"And don't even dare compare me to those pompous bastards..." His tone had hardened, almost taking on a hateful edge. "Yeah, most angels are assholes, and I can assure you I'm nothing like them. I want nothing to do with them and their damn holy agenda!"
Smirking a bit at that, the lovely blond moved towards the counter and again poured them both drink. Hers was a double that she tossed back and then filled again before placing his before him.
"Now... THAT is about the best thing you've said since you've popped through my door." she said with a grin. "Try not to break that one, would you? My partner probably wouldn't be happy to go through the glasses quite so fast."
Picking up her own shot again, she moved around the bar and then made her way back to join him. Leaning a slim hip on the bar, she eyed him over the rim of her tumbler and felt the glow of the whiskey starten to loosen up her nerves. Sipping her half full drink, Lexi meet his gaze and arched a brow.
"Since you evidently know who I am already, I won't waste both our times introducing myself. I think what best be reasoned out now is where we go from here. While I appreciate and respect the fact you came to warn me, I won't hide away like a scared rabbit. I'm really, truly not defenseless and my family knows more than most what we are dealing with. I promise you... I don't plan on letting anything happen to my loved ones. You may think you know everything there is about me already but I can garentee you that you don't. The things I've gotten from you... well, they are just half of what I have on hand. I can and will protect myself. If the only reason you came is because you felt honor bound to warn me... Fine, you've done your duty. However, if there is anything more... Then you will just have to stick around and get to know us. "
Knocking back half of what was in her glass, the blond meet the angels eyes with a fortitude that made her sapphire eyes shimmer. There was no defiance or anger there... Just simple truth and will.
"Arguing sure as hell isn't getting either of us anywhere and I have a feeling we are both to stubborn to ever admit we might be wrong so.... I think a compromise is our best bet. If you really are my..... relative... however many times removed.... We'd best find some middle ground before we meet our maker."

Azrael listened to the girl in unmoving silence, his mouth set into a strong grimace that mirrored the emotion shining in his eyes. He wasn't particularly happy with the situation, not in the least. He hadn't some her to expose himself, which to him, meant putting the girl in more danger. But it seemed as though that aim was too difficult to succeed, and girl had indeed discovered who he was, at least in part. The little bit he shared with her seemed to soften the tension that clouded the air between them, making the room feel entirely more comfortable. From her words, he could already tell the strength she held. It was a potent spark, an indistinguishable flame that burned slowly, smoldering. And yet, that strength was clouded by an excessive amount of bravery and chivalry; he could see her pride, the pride she held in her abilities and her power to protect those she cared about.
So she was strong, powerful even. He could attempt to dispute that, but Azrael knew it would be futile. The girl was aware that she was near the top of food chain, but then again, by Azrael's knowledge she'd probably only seen half of the food chain. Now that Lucifer was free, things that hadn't walked the earth in several millennia were now awakening once again, bringing terror with them. And Lexi could only defend herself against so much.
When the girl brought him another shot, he accepted it gracious, downing the amber liquid almost with a sense of need. The warm burn washed down his throat, and spread through his chest like a slow, simmering burn. The sensation warmed him, and relaxed the tension that slowly building itself in his mind.
'So what do you plan to do?' Jasper's voice mused in his mind, curious for answers. 'Are you going to get out of here, or do you plan to actually try to stick around and protect her?' Though the question itself was simple, the answer was far from it.
Azrael breathed deeply. 'I don't think I can just leave her. She's just so...human. And you humans have the tendency to have a terrible sense at gauging danger you know. I don't really have a choice in the matter here. I'm just going to have to stick around, and keep her from getting herself killed. Cause God knows you all are extremely fragile.'
'Wow, thanks for the awesome self-esteem burst you know,' Jasper spoke sarcastically. 'I mean, I think we have enough to deal with without you insulting my species.'
At that Azrael couldn't help but chuckle. Jasper could be so...amusing at times. That was the easiest way to put it.
Turning his attention back to the physical, Azrael eyed Lexi passively. He had been silent for a few brief moments, contemplating her words deeply. "A middle ground sounds...reasonable," he informed her, his expression still restrained. "As such, I guess we might now proceed to be a little less formal and more open with one another. Ask me anthing you like. I...I'll be as honest as a can."

It didn't take a blind man to see the inner struggle the angel was having and Lexi was no ones fool. He seemed to be having an inner debate and she resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Sometimes she was amazed at how difficult people made things for themselves. Instead of just doing what they inwardly knew was right, they had to justify everything. It seemed angels were no different.
"A middle ground sounds...reasonable," he informed her, his expression still restrained. "As such, I guess we might now proceed to be a little less formal and more open with one another. Ask me anthing you like. I...I'll be as honest as a can."
Arching a brow at him, the blond sipped her whiskey and thought about his statement. Finally, meeting his gaze over the rim, she tilted her chin up and set the glass down.
"Did you love her? The woman that had your child? How was it that you didn't realize that you had offspring? What do you know about her? All I know is that a demon cursed her line for leaving the coven but no clue as to why ever came to light."

The questions that poured out of Lexi's mouth definitely took Azrael by surprise, striking a deep and sensitive nerve. She wanted to know about Elizabeth, and Azrael's own history with her. It was a sore subject for him; after all, he'd never found peace with the subject. Elizabeth's death had come as a shock to him, and in the several centuries that had passed, he had never really dealt with it, and gotten over it. Thinking about her, it still still hurt him, made his heart ache. The thought of what could of been, what they'd had, it pained him, knowing how abruptly it had all come crashing down.
It took Azrael a moment to sort through his emotions, before he finally answered, his voice low and weak. "Yes..." he managed, barely above a whisper. "...I...I loved her." The verbal confirmation of it struck him, and hit him deep. He'd never actually said it, until now.
Another moment of silence gripped him, and refused to release. The complexities of the situation were wondrous, once you thought about them. Two beings, each powerful in their own right, meeting as they had; it was the workings of Fate. And yet, Fate had a different path in store for them, filled with both warmth and heartache.
Azrael fingered the shot glass in his hand momentarily, before setting it down on the counter, and standing up abruptly. He ambled forward slowly, his gaze trained down on the floor.
"Her name was Elizabeth." Azrael stopped, continuing to gaze down, his back to Lexi. "She...she belonged to this coven, but it was more than just the witchcraft that made the demon want her. She was a powerful psychic, and the demon that controlled the coven coveted her because of that power. I...I convinced her to run away, that I'd protect her...." He chocked up a moment, unable to continue.
Azrael promised that he'd protect Elizabeth, but he'd failed. He hadn't been there to save her, to keep her safe. He been too busy off on a wild goose chase, and in the meantime, she'd died, and a child had been born. His child.
Turning around, he faced Lexi, the last remnant of his union with Elizabeth. "I left her in a convent, knowing that she'd be safe there, that nothing demonic would be able to get her. I'd been tipped off that some angels were coming after me, so I left her there, knowing that the farther away she was from me, the safer she'd be from them. By the time I came back...she was...she was dead." He paused for a moment, refusing the tears that adamantly urged to be shed; Death didn't cry. "The nuns didn't say anything about a child. They hid it from me, though why, I don't know. Maybe someone got to them. Hell, I didn't even know Elizabeth had died...and I should have!" He slammed is fist down on the bar. "I'm the Angel of Death for God's sake! I should've seen her on the List, but somehow...somehow she wasn't there until she died...."

Lexi was actually suprised when her "grandfather" actually started to talk. When he admited to loving her "grandmother" she got the feeling that he was only just now admiting that fact to himself.
"Her name was Elizabeth."
At the name, Lexi raised her glass to her lips to hid her expression. Elizabeth had always been one of her favorite names for some reason. Maybe this explained so much.
"She...she belonged to this coven, but it was more than just the witchcraft that made the demon want her. She was a powerful psychic, and the demon that controlled the coven coveted her because of that power. I...I convinced her to run away, that I'd protect her...."
There was such a note of pain in the angels voice that Lexi felt her heart reach out to him. It was obvious that the memory was hard for him to handle but she also suspected it was the first time he'd ever spoken aloud of the story. It couldn't be easy for him to remember after all these years and especially to face the realization that he couldn't change to past.
"I'm the Angel of Death for God's sake! I should've seen her on the List, but somehow...somehow she wasn't there until she died...."
As the story had poured forth, the pretty blond witch had held herself back but now she moved forward to place her tumbler on the counter. Reaching out, she softly put her hand over his and drew up notice up to her. There was no pity in her eyes as their gaze meet but there was sorrow and understanding.
"Azreal...... as much as we all like to think we can handle anything and everything that comes our way.... We can't. There are just some things that not even the most powerful of us can avoid. In all honesty, I'm not even sure we are meant to.... Its no more your fault than my fault and ... Well, I have some views on the whole God thing that people throw around."
Stopping for a moment, Lexi tried to gather her thoughts and put them to words. She'd never tried it before so she expected that they came out somewhat rambled.
"Some people believe that God is all powerful and that he controls each faucet of life with an iron hand.... but that would make him a god of vengence and dictatorship.... That isn't the God I know or believe in..... I don't think he controls any of us anymore... He has chosen to let free will guide our paths and in doing so, expects us to act on our own thoughts and feelings. Have you ever thought that maybe ... maybe the angels were already thinking for themselves when this tragedy happened? That maybe.... Maybe the fates had something else in store for you and Elizabeth? Everything happens for a reason.. I believe that.... and somehow... Your blood has survived for hundreds of years without anyone being the wiser..... If God were truly against you.... Don't you think he would have sent someone to take care of your decendents? Do you really think we could have escaped this long from his wrath? Because... I don't. I believe that he's giving us a choice and wants us to be who we chose to be. I think the same goes for you..... Maybe... Maybe he knew at some point this moment would come to pass and that is why we were given the trials to overcome...."
Feeling as if she were sounding like a fool, Lexi picked up her drink again and frowned down into the amber liquid. It was hard for her to put into words the thoughts she'd been having. After Raziel's visit, she'd actually begun to wonder if this wasn't God's plan after all. Maybe the angels had been following blindly for so long that they'd actually forgotten what their TRUE purpose was. Maybe, like all creatures that grow to aware of their own power... Maybe this was their wake up call. Maybe they'd strayed so far from their true path that they were no longer able to see where their steps were leading them.
