Staring down at the gravestone in front of him, a multitude of emotions flew through Dare's chest. First, of course, there was the grief; the wish that the life that had been taken away could be brought back. Then there was anger, exhaustion, a hope for a better future...
But loss was never easy, was it? It always haunted a person, no matter how much they pushed themselves into the future. He'd stood before so many gravestones, just like these, in the past...he felt as if he should be used to it by now. People who lived lives like his didn't exactly live to a ripe old age, after all.
Yet, as he stared down at the freshly packed earth, all he could think of was...how damned afraid he was. And how much he wanted to hang onto the life he led with both hands. Who knew what kind of Hell the devil had waiting for him down there? For his sins...
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!"
A voice bellowed, cutting through his reverie. Charging at him with a pair of gardening tools raised in the air like a sword, the cemetary groundskeeper charged at them in all of his over-all-ed glory.
Turning to his daughter, Dare scooped her up in his arms and grabbed the shovel currently acting as a makeshift grave marker. Looking into her wide eyes as he ran, he managed a wide grin.
"Okay, baby, Spot's now at peace in the cemetary, like you wanted. Daddy has to leave now, 'cause the man over there looks really mad. Okay? Okay! Now, let's go find Mommy!"
Laughing when Maria started to wrap her arms and legs around him like a little monkey, he charged toward the graveyard's entrance. He could hear the huffing and puffing of the groundskeeper behind them, but thankfully, the old man seemed to be tiring. After a few more feet, the labored breathing turned softer and softer, and Dare breathed a sigh of relief when he turned to find empty air behind them.
Stopping, he bent over slightly to catch his breath, supporting Maria with one arm. "Whoof, that was a close one. I think we left Mommy near the entrance...didn't we?"
Maria just shrugged, eyeing him in with he liked to call 'the thoughtful look.' God, she looked so much like her mother at times like this, it made him want to squeeze her good. Giving his daughter a kiss on the tip of her nose and watching her grin in response, he hefted her up and started to walk toward the path to their side.
...Which was just about when he heard the golf cart.
Crap.
