The night was silent. Almost terrifyingly silent. There were no sounds of animals or insects rustling in the bayou and it immediately put the two hunters lurking in the woods on alert. The smaller figure moved cautiously forward as they tracked a small group to a murky, run down shack in the middle of a swampy clearing.
Putting her finger to her lips, Jessie Coulter cast a look back over her shoulder at her companion and her eyes fairly sparkled with enjoyment as she made another motion signaling 4 occupants.
Seeing the understanding in her twin’s eyes, the young woman creped forward as silently as she could until she could run to the building and put her back against the rotting wood. Here in the bayou, it remained dark and damp 90% of the time and it seemed like the perfect spot for a few vampires to hide. It was on the fringes of New Orleans and well within the feeding range of a blood sucker.
Trey was a bit grumpy. He didn't really like tromping through the mucky swamp land of the bayou but he was damned sure not going to let his sister go off on her own. Which she would have done if he hadn't come with her. But he had other things on his mind as his boots kept sticking in the mud as he tried to be as quiet as possible.
He watched as his sister signaled him to be quiet and he stopped in his tracks. She indicated with her hand that there were 4 of the suckers in the wooden shack they were approaching.
Trey nodded and waited until his sister was to the building.
Once she was there, he quickly moved with long strides to follow.... leaning carefully back against the wall of the shack next to his sister. His lips close to her ears he whispered.
"Ok, what's next in your plan oh fearless one?"
Smirking a bit at her brother’s question, Jess eased a wicked looking gun from her belt and handed it to him.
"Here, try this out.... Dad has been working on a new kind of bullet. It’s a glass projectile that is filled with dead man's blood. If you can land a bullet into a vampire, it will explode and send the poison through their system."
Taking another from a holster by her shoulder, the young woman checked the weapon and then flipped the safety off. Once that was armed and ready, she reached down and pulled a long, wicked blade from a sheath on her thigh. A small bottle appeared as if from thin air and she coated the blade generously with a thick , stinking red liquid before shoving it back in its holder and handing the container to Trey.
"I think you know what to do with this..." she whispered with a smirk.
As she waited for him to make his own preparations, Jess glanced around the area and then listened carefully for signs of life inside the cabin.
"Life... yeah... right Coulter...” she muttered to herself.”I think they moved beyond that all ready."
Trey shook his head as his sister handed him the gun. He took a minute to look it over. It did look pretty badass. Leave it to dad he figured. Mimicking Jess' actions he flipped off the safety. Then he pulled a large bladed knife from a sheaf on his back and took the container and coated the blade with dead man’s blood.
He then took the container of blood and closed it up tight and slipped it into his jacket pocket. He took a deep breath and let out a sigh. Pulling all his focus back on this. Trying not to think about Shane and what the deal with that was. He needed his head in the game. Gun in his left hand and knife in his right he was ready.
He made eye contact with his twin and gave her a nod.
"Are you ready?" He asked her his voice barely above a whisper. "I'll take the front you take the back.... On 3?"
Nodding, Jess meet his gaze and told him to be careful with her expression. Then, she was on the move. With quick, silent steps, she scrambled along the side wall and peeked around the corner. Seeing nothing, she darted around the corner and was at the back door before she could even think about anything that might throw her off stride.
Hitting the barrier with a hard shoulder blow, she dropped and rolled as it broke open and what little light there was filtered into the room. Since it was just an old trapping cabin, only one huge room remained and as she thought.... 3 vampires were bedded down inside.
As soon as the door had exploded, one of the blood suckers had leapt to his feet and flown at her. Targeting him with the weapon, she managed to get a shot of and into his chest before another one managed to figure out that they were under attack.
Keeping her concentration on the monsters before her, she was aware of Trey bursting in and taking out another one before she was in a hand to hand battle with a blond woman.
The female hit her with a hard right hook but Jess had enough experience not to fall before the onslaught.
Head butting her hard in the face, the young hunter whirled and pushed her back before the thing could sink its teeth into her like she was attempting.
Taking off in different directions around the side of the little cabin, Trey moved around to the front. Paused for a minute and then lifted a booted foot and with one hard kick splintered the old wooden door and moved inside.
Jess had made her move just slightly before he had so she had attracted their attention first. He saw her shoot one dead on in the chest just as he raised the gun up and shot at another. His shot hit its mark as well but by that time he could see Jess going at it with a blond female vamp. So they had two vamps pumped full of dead man’s blood and they were stumbling around out of it. Trey had just enough time to yell, "Jessie!!" Before he had his hands full of another vamp that jumped him from behind.
He was royally pissed now as he struggled with a straggly dark haired male.... the attack had caused Trey to drop the gun, but he still had the knife. He twisted his body quickly and flipped the bloodsucker over his shoulder and they landed with a thud onto the dirt floor.
Quickly he took the knife and with both hands thrust it down into the belly of the creature on the floor. He knew that wouldn't kill it but at least it would get some dead man’s blood flowing through its system.
Then he moved quickly to recover the gun... He looked up at his sister still struggling with the blond vamp and didn't have a shot.
"Damn it!!" He yelled.
The only thing he could think of was to charge at them and let go with a flying kick at the blond to knock her away from Jess. By then the dosed up vamps who were stumbling around had made their way lethargically moving closer to Trey and his sister. Trey fired off another round at the bastard he had stabbed as he seemed to be the most coherent of the bunch.
They needed to be able to get close enough to the blood suckers without getting bit. But it seemed they were trying to fight through the dead man’s blood. Maybe there wasn't enough in the bullets to completely incapacitate them. Trey took aim and fired a couple more rounds off into the advancing crew. Standing side by side with his twin now.
Jess caught sight of her twin flipping the other vampire to the floor by she was in a brutal battle with the blond. The creature delivered another blow to her stomach but the huntress managed to land one of her own square into its solar plexus. It drove the monster back in time for Trey's kick to knock her aside and allow the twins to put their backs together.
A quick glance around showed the door nearby and Jess gave a sigh of relief. She didn't want to be caught against wall even though it would offer some safety. They needed elbow room to fight and the vamps were closing in fast. If they could make it outside, she might be about to toss her lighter on the gasoline ladened rags she'd dropped outside the door.
"Trey... move to the door. There is too much crap in here to trip over. If we can get outside, we might be able to burn them out. If not, we can pick them off as them exit this hell hole." she whispered as she inched towards the broken door.
Reaching in her pocket, she pulled out her lucky Zippo lighter and worked the flint. A wicked smile crossed her face as she glanced down and saw an old pile of newspapers between them and the vampires.
"OR..... Even better... Get ready to MOVE!" she hissed before tossing the lighter at the rubbish and watching it catch flame.
Immediately, the sparks turned into flames as the old material combusted and Jess was instantly on the move. Feeling her twin right behind her, she streaked from the house and turned in time to fire off a round at the blond who tried to follow.
Hitting the murky darkness of the clearing, the huntress palmed her knife and prepared for whatever happened next.
Trey was now back to back with Jess... the wheels in both their heads were spinning, he was sure. They were usually on the same wave length.
Keeping as close to Jess as he could he moved toward the door with her. Side stepping to keep the vamps in front of him. Trey couldn't help but grin when he saw his sister pull out the Zippo and light it up. He knew she had to have something up her sneaky little sleeve.
When Jessie yelled, he was quick to do as she said. Running toward the door he was practically pushing his sister out the door. Banking off to the left as they made it outside he was just in time to avoid being shot by his sister when she fired at the bitch that was hot on their tails.
"Nice one just.... just about took my head off with that one."
"Don't be such a wuss!" his beloved twin shot back.
He knew it wasn't that close but he had to give her a hard time anyway. Getting himself into a crouch he still had the gun in one hand and the knife in the other. The blond was stuttering around now dosed up with dead man’s blood but he didn't want to take the chance to go after her yet. She was still too close to the door. And he was expecting the rest of the blood suckers to start filling out the door any minute now. And he wasn't wrong. He watched as they started to come out, heading straight for them again.
"Here they come, Jess!! Let's do this."
Grinning wickedly, the huntress followed on her twin’s heels and hit two more of the vamps with another round of dead man’s blood. The two she hit went down and laid quietly in the dust as the double dose of poison comatose them. The blond staggered sideways and then her eyes seemed to flicker to something directly behind Jess. Suddenly, a very bad feeling came over her as she swallowed and then glanced backwards to see 3 more of the damned creatures emerging from the tree line.
"SON OF A BITCH!" she swore before grabbing her long blade and bringing it down with a hard thump across one of the fallen vampire’s necks.
The metal was so sharp that it swiped right through the flesh and the creature decomposed right before her eyes. Or would have if she'd been watching. As she moved to take the fallen vampire out, the three newcomers flew forward and the twins were suddenly locked in a battle for their lives.
Toeing a lever on her boot, Jess was thankful when a silver blade appeared at the toe of it. The blond seemed to find nerve now that her compatriots had arrived and she launched herself in a drunken attack. Sliding back, Jess spun in a wicked roundhouse kick and sank the silver straight into the bitchs chest. A horrible shriek sounded from the monster before she two started to disintegrate.
"TREY!!! WATCH YOUR BACK!! WE"VE GOT COMPANY" she shouted, hoping her twin would hear as he battled his own attacker.
Trey started firing rounds at the vampires as they came out the door. He hit them a couple times. Some of them hit the ground but a couple were still fighting the effects. He saw Jess Hit a couple of her own and they went down. There was a moment when it seemed quiet. And then Trey heard his sister swear loud. The resounding
"SON OF A BITCH" had him wheel around immediately to see what was going on.
"JESUS FREAKING CHRIST..... HOW MANY OF THESE SUCKERS ARE THERE?" He yelled out in frustration.
Just as his sister started to move back into the fight that was now 7 on 2 he let his instincts automatically take over. He leveled the gun at the three new vamps and started firing. Emptying the magazine on the 3 of them. Dosing them up as much as he could. At least it would slow them down. He could see Jess fighting and kicking in his peripheral vision and that meant she was ok and holding her own.
Quickly he tucked the gun into the back of his pants and now he only has his body and the huge knife to fight with. Taking a grip with both hands on the knife he made a running charge at one of the doped up vamps and kicked it to the ground.
The adrenaline was pumping through his system hard now and his body couldn't feel anything. He was focused solely on the fight. Jumping on the downed vamp he rose up the knife and plunged it into the bastard’s throat.
With one swift twist of the knife to the left he ripped through the neck and the main artery started pumping blood.... another hard twist to the right and he severed the spinal cord and the head was detached from the body... It took a few seconds before the thing disintegrated and he found himself covered in blood and sitting in a pile of dust.
Jumping to his feet he spun around. Trying to get a bead on Jess and making sure she was doing ok. Spotting her still in the heat of a battle herself he moved off to attack the next one. Not even aware of the blood and muck that was dripping off of him as he moved.
Jess barely had time to check on Trey before a dark-haired vampire grabbed her by the throat. Pulling up a knee, she hit him in the family jewels and breathed a sigh of relief. Too soon as it soon became apparent.
From out of nowhere, an arm shot around to grab her in a half nelson and no amount of wiggling seemed to buy the tiniest amount of freedom. That didn't mean she gave up but a sharp wrench on her neck drew her up short.
Out of the 7 vampires in the fight, only three were still up and functioning. Trey was looked in a death battle and Jess could see he was covered in blood. The vampire holding her was at least half a head taller than Jess herself and she couldn't get any traction to kick him in the shins.
