The last week had been just plain weird. After waking up in her own bed with a bandaged hand that seemed to put truth to her nightmare, Sage had walked about in a befuddled haze. For the life of her, she couldn't make sense of what she had seen and heard and had finally chalked her injury up to sleepwalking. Although she had never done this before, she figured there was a first for everything and the stress that she had been under had induced it. Since she had woken in bed, she must have only dreamed of going out and been so tired when she got home that she had forgotten the events of hte previous evening that had lead her to be where she was.
The very real nightmare she had experienced was compliments of the ancient book of prophecies that had recently come into her hands regarding the lore of demons and angels. That could be the ONLY explaination that made any sense.
Finally, shaking off her confusion, the young professor had went about her daily activities but couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching her. A fierce prickling had settled on her neck and she caught herself searching the shadows in fear of the unknown. The only time she found herself comfortable were when she was shut away in her classroom or in her home. Even then, a feeling of restlessness prevaded and she found herself looking out her windows as if trying to figure out why she felt so uneasy.
By the time Friday night again rolled around, Sage felt as if she were jumping at shadows. The slightest sound cause her pulse to race and she was constantly watching over her shoulder. Gathering her books from class, she stuffed them in the leather messenger back and then swung it over her shoulder. Pulling her keys and a small can of mace from her pocket, she quickly locked her office and then nodded to the security guard that saw her out of the building. The late afternoon was just giving over to dusk as she crossed the college lawns towards her car.
Suddenly, for the corner of her eye, the young professor caught a glimmer of movement. Immediately on the defensive, she gripped her mace and looked towards where she had seen the action.

Humanity has always been a puzzle from him and Raziel always from afar secretly longed to be a part of their world instead of staying on the edge, instead of being solely a soldier blinded by faith. Now there was the blonde woman that had intrigued him greatly, humanity had surprised him before, but not to the length she had.
She possessed a beauty he had only witnessed in a few rare humans, there was something about those big blue eyes of her and the frame of her golden hair that moved the angel and got him wishing for another glimpse. And that terrified Raziel to a point, she was a mortal woman and he was an angel of heaven, he had rebelled against his orders, but he was still an angel nevertheless. He wasn’t meant to have those thoughts or to be moved in such a way by a woman.
He had been watching her from afar, the demon that had attacked her…he had never felt such overpowering darkness before, never felt a surge of vile power like he had seen in the demon and he was sure he had felt a shadow of his presence a couple of times. Raze believed that the devil would come back for her, to finish what he had started. Besides that there was also the fact that a simple mortal woman had managed to send an irresistible summon to an angel.
Now the heavenly warrior was so close to her that he could almost reach up and touch her golden hair. Instinctively his hand reached forward, but realizing she had somehow noticed his presence, the angel disappeared only to reappear at the top of the five store building to their left.
From the rooftop he watched her with a mesmerized impression. Humans were so unpredictable, and yet in them could be found an untapped potential for greatness and what he saw in her was as bright as the sun.
Her beauty and courage had moved him, and still did.

Sage was losing her mind. That was all there was to it. She'd evidently had her head to far into the books because she kept feeling as if someone were right beside her. Almost to the point of touching her. When she looked, however, no one was there and the feeling completely disappeared.
Shaking her head in bafflement, the pretty blond hurried towards her car. Running a hand through her long locks, she pulled her keys up and hit the unlock button. Hurrying forward, she pulled open the door and tossed her messenger bag into the back. Preparing to slid in to the drivers seat, she looked up and straight at the mirage of her dream.
For a long moment, the young professor was frozen. The man standing before her even at the distance couldn't be any other than the one she had dreamed of rescueing her. However, if he was real.....
Starting to shake, Sage was unaware that she had dropped her keys until the panic alarm started to blare loudly. Jumping sky high, she looked away from the man to her keys and leaned down to grab them up. Fumbling for a moment, she finally found the off button and sighed in relief as the horn suddenly silenced.
Taking a deep breath, she looked back up and meet the gaze of the stranger. Instantly, a feeling of peace swept over her and she couldn't pull her gaze away.

What was there with humanity that intrigued the lonely warrior form heaven? What was there that drove him to the point he would gladly sacrifice himself to save them, even knowing that his chances of success were extremely feeble?
Mankind was flawed, their bodies were fragile and their lives fleeting…but it all just made them look all the most precious into the angel’s eyes. Inside each and every one of them he saw a flickering light that if nurtured and guided in the right direction could be turned into greatness. They were definitively worth of saving.
The blond woman he watched in special had a potential that could be almost as blinding as the sun. Just a few nights ago she stood against a powerful demon and even though there was no hope she showed bravery and hope. It had been her summon that had guided Raziel’s light to banish the darkness of the demon.
She was someone that should be protect, he could feel so. He wasn’t sure why or how, he just knew it. Knew he had to keep the darkness from claiming the flicker of light he saw in her.
And even so that her beauty stunned him and the angel knew it would be wiser to stay away, he was incapable of doing so. That was the reason he had approached her now, allowed her to see him. As she knelled and searched for her keys, the angel moved in a blink of an eye and appeared next to her, offering his hand to help her get up.

As the man approached and offered his hand, Sage glanced up and then was lost in his eyes. The dark depths seemed to glimmer with some inner light and she tilted her head as she allowed him to help her up. Some instinct told her this was not ordinary being but she didn't know exactly WHAT he was.
"Its you...." she whispered. "I didn't dream you up after all....."
For a long moment after that, Sage could only stare at him. Her thoughts flew a mile a minute to make sense of what and who he might be but failed miserably.
"Who are you? What are you?" she asked softly before looking down at where their hands were still intwined. "You look like an ordinary human but you aren't, are you?"
Reaching up with her free hand, she wrapped it around the pendant she wore. As a vibe of energy seemed to radiate from it, she closed her eyes and then sighed.
"You are the one the old woman told me about, aren't you? The protector that is drawn to this necklace...."

As she placed her hand over his and Raziel helped her up, he was stunned of how fragile the woman seemed to be and yet at the same time she held some unseen, still obvious, internal strength that was capable of impressing even the angel. Humans were always something that intrigued him greatly and he often wanders how it would be like to be one of them and to be guided by his own heart.
However in all his time amongst mankind, he couldn’t dare to say he had rarely encountered one that was graced with such beauty. And that fact confused him greatly, igniting in him feelings that scared him and yet got him unwilling to turn his back. The simple feeling of her hand in his was enough to leave him greatly disturbed and he forced himself to let it go.
Her words indicated that she was confused and Raziel could understand so, because he was confused himself. She had called upon him before, an irresistible calling that had drawn him to here when she needed his help and even now he felt some sort of connection to her. Even in her confusion her mind was sharp enough to realize he wasn’t human. It was evident she was more controlled than the last time he had approached her, the time when she had burst into uncontrollable laughter.
“I’m Raziel...” He answered to her first question, but before he could go into further detail her voice ringed again and his attention was dragged to the pendant he held tightly in her hand. Placing his hand over hers, the angel pushed aside the uneasy sensation it provoked on him once again and gently took the pendant on his hand for further examination.
Engraved in it was the sigil of an angel, his sigil. Even then it wouldn’t be enough to summon him, no matter how much it appeared to pulse with bright intensity under his touch and brought a familiar memory back to his attention. Eons ago a sword was forged for the heavenly warrior itself, a sword no other being could ever wield, but Raziel himself. A weapon fit for the soldier of heaven. With it, he had slain many foul creatures from hell until the swords had been destroyed in the battle against Lucifer when he and the fallen angels that followed him stormed the gates of heaven in defiance to God himself.
The sword had been destroyed, but shards of it remained and their mystical link to the angel remained. Somehow a shard had found its way to a woman capable of summoning him. He raised his eyes to meet hers.
“It was once part of a sword I wielded, the sword was lost many eons ago, but it still is a part of me that have found its way into your hands. It was your call that summoned me, not the shard.”

When the man reached up and touched the necklace around her neck, Sage immediately felt another jolt of energy. Gasping silently, she unconciously moved closer to him as he took in the pendant and then spoke.
“It was once part of a sword I wielded, the sword was lost many eons ago, but it still is a part of me that have found its way into your hands. It was your call that summoned me, not the shard.”
Confusion flickered over the young womans face as she tried to make sense of what he was saying. Her eyes grew wide and then she started to shake her head.
"No... No, it can't be. There is nothing special about me... I'm just an ordinary girl with an ordinary job at the university. Why would I be able to call you? I mean, it makes no sense. The old woman who gave this to me said that a time in my life would come when I would need the protection of the power drawn to this piece. That whomever came would be a vital part of my future... I thought she was merely telling an old legend....."
Falling silent, Sage looked up at him and scanned his face in hope of some rational explaination. When she took him is own bemused expression, she faltered and then took a deep breath in hopes of steadying her nerves.
"You said your name is Raziel.... and that this piece is from a sword eons old.... What exactly does that mean? What are you?"

Hearing her speak, Raziel frowned and gazed at her curiously. If she could only see what he saw in her, if she could understand what he knew, she wouldn’t think herself to be…ordinary. There would be no space for self doubt.
“You don’t know your own potential,” it was a statement, not a question. “If you could see what I see in you, your potential for greatness…it glows as bright as the sun.”
Watching her curiously, he was baffled by how she seemed to doubt herself. It seemed to be a somewhat common trait in humans, doubting what they could achieve and being ignorant to their own inner strength. Raziel had doubts, yes. He doubted the orders he had received, he doubted his allegiance to a heaven that had became tainted with unmerciful self righteousness. But one thing he had never doubted was himself.
“I’m an angel, a soldier of heaven. And you Sage Bennett have summoned me.” Yes, he remembered her name, he hadn’t managed to forget.

For a long moment, Sage simply stared at him. Then, suddenly, she burst out in nervous laughter. Her expression was incredulous as she began to shake her head. Who was this guy trying to fool? A soldier of heaven? That was surely a new one!
"OK..... I'm sorry... but... A soldier of heaven? As in... An angel? I somehow pictured you guys much more.... well.... shiny.... and with wings sticking out of your back...." she said as her untimely giggles settled down again.
One of her biggest failings was her tendency to laugh when she got nervous and this was definitely one of those times. Covering her mouth to help stop the mirth, the dainty blond eyed him ruefully. He obviously was concerned about her sanity by the expression on his face and that set her off again.
"Oh my... I'm so sorry. I promise you I'm as sane as you are but..this..." she said when a break came in her giggles. " THis really isn't a laughing matter but you see.... I grew up believing in the bogeyman and other mythical creatures but angels were never mentioned. Now suddenly, out of nowhere you appear and want me to believe they exist? I'm a devote Catholic but that is a bit rich..... And what on earth would a soldier of heaven be doing protecting me?? It makes absolutely no sense...You'll have to forgive me for my doubts...."

That burst of laughter again made the frown on the angel’s forehead grew even more disturbed. There was something wrong with her? Raziel hardly believed what he had just told her to be laughing matter, but then again those were more cynical times when believing often required more than faith, it required proof.
He tilted his read as he watched her, intrigued. As she tried to recompose herself, he sighed and patiently waited for her to calm down. The apology that followed seemed heartfelt, but it was saddening that it would be easier to believe in the bogeyman than it was to believe in the existence of angels, especially for a devout religious person.
When her outburst had finally ceased, Raziel stepped forward, wrapping his arms around her waist. He could feel her body tensing up as he did so, maybe she was even a little scared by his sudden move and the unmoving strength of his arms, but if he had to offer her proof to make her believe…so would he.
A pair of huge shadowy wings manifested on his back and as they moved gracefully, the angel and the woman were raised from the ground. As he took flight towards the sky, Raziel held on tight to her, she was safe but he could fell her shaking.
Soon they were standing above the clouds were they could get a clear view of the shining moon and would be safe from curious eyes, the angel wings kept flapping, keeping them in the air.
“Is further proof required?”

One moment, Sage was firmly planted on the ground. The next, she was soaring with the man far above the earth below. Gasping, she held on to him tightly and was afraid to breath in case he would accidently drop her. By the time he stopped to hover in mid air, she was almost beyond words.
“Is further proof required?”
Glancing up at him, the young woman opened her mouth but then closed it again. What on earth was she suppose to say to that?? Suddenly, temper won out over her other emotions and she glared at him.
"A little warning next time might be appropriate!! You cant just go around sweeping a girl up into the sky! You might give her a heart attack! I've half a mind to deck you when you take us back down..." she said fiercely with eyes flashing. "Couldn't you have proven you point a bit simplier? I think the wings alone would have done the trick......."
Then, seeming to realize where they were at once more, she looked down, gulped and grew deathly pale.
"Not to mention the fact.... If you don't put me on solid ground soon... I may be sick all over your front. I'm deathly afraid of heights...."

Raziel was once again stunned by this mortal woman’s reaction. Humans were unpredictable, but she seemed to be the most unpredictable creature he had ever encountered. The sudden change from an amazed look to a fit of anger had been an impressive one to say the least. She managed to continuously surprise him beyond measure.
Gazing at her with a perplex look on his features, he watched as she grew pale and uneasy. She was an intriguing woman that had the angel constantly guessing what she was going to do or say next. At her words however, something that could almost pass for a smirk crossed Raziel’s lips.
Using his wings, he guided them down towards the roof of the highest campus building where they would be able to talk undisturbed. As soon as they landed, his wings disappeared without a trace and he released his grip of her, even though Sage’s deathly grip of him had lingered a little longer.
Taking a few steps back, he seized her up and down. She was a woman of rare beauty and as far as he could tell, unconventional behavior.
“You puzzle me greatly,” he stated it plainly. “I don’t think in all the years amongst your kind I ever met one such as you.”

Sage couldn't hide her relief once she felt her feet touch solid ground. She HATED heights and it was the one thing that truly terrified her. Wasn't it just her luck that the most fascinating man she'd ever encountered had wings? Sighing a bit, she glanced upward at him as he spoke again.
“You puzzle me greatly,” he stated it plainly. “I don’t think in all the years amongst your kind I ever met one such as you.”
Arching a brow, Sage meet his gaze.
"Really? Well.. I will take that as a compliment. I would hate to be lumped together with most of the insane idiots running around these days. Besides, what fun is it being like everyone else?" she retorted before glancing around. "And why in tarnation are we up here??"
Unable to resist peeking over the side of the building, Sage immediately gasped and then rounded on him. Common sense told her that she should probably be a bit terrified of the angel but somehow, she couldn't quite bring herself to be upset.
"If your an angel.... What on earth are you doing standing around talking to me? I mean, arent' there good works for you to be doing?"
Then, as if something suddenly occured to her, she paled and stepped backwards.
"Wait a minute...... If your real..... Then the other night was not a product of my overactive imagination was it? That other guy.... Creature..demon.. whatever he was... He truly exists too??"

One thing that was impossible for Raziel to understand was fear of heights, being an angel and possessing wings, heights were peaceful and welcoming to him. He reveled on the purity, nothing holding him back, and fearing it was something he couldn’t grasp and doubted he would ever be able to.
What was there in her that amazed him? It was her obvious beauty or was it the unique way she acted? Maybe it was a mix of both that urged Raziel to try to get a better understanding of her nature…or even that small selfish desire of him to be able to feel what humans felt and understand what drove them.
"If your an angel.... What on earth are you doing standing around talking to me? I mean, arent' there good works for you to be doing?"
If she only knew, about the betrayal, about what was to come…and the angel had unwillingly helped it to take place. His blindness might have doomed the world he hoped to save, and if so he was willing to sacrifice himself to do whatever he could to atone.
“You’re special Sage, your voice reached me over all the others in the world. The shard that you keep around your neck, it didn’t find you by accident. I feel that keeping you safe is the most important thing I could be doing right now…”
And then he was able to see in her the panic that the memory of the demon created in her and a overall sense of sorrow loomed over him. He didn’t wish to cause her more concern, but he couldn’t hide the truth from her. “The demon is real, he is still out there. There is a war waged between heaven and hell and we are caught in between.”

At his words, Sage reeled backwards. A war between heaven and hell? They were caught between? It was almost to much to take in. Everything she had ever believed was tested as she stood there gazing up at him.
"Are you trying to tell me Armagedon is about to start? That the creature I saw that night... Hes a part of it? My grandfather told me stories of such beings but I had never seen any with my own two eyes. Honestly, I thought he was a bit nuts even though I loved him more than life itself."
Taking another step away from the angel, the young professor looked away from him and began to pace the rooftop. Her pretty brow was furrowed in thought as she moved.
"If what you say is true... Then the old woman was right. She insisted that the fate of humanity itself rested in human natures basic form. Man was made in gods image and that is its purest identity. We have the ability to believe good will always triumph over evil and the true of heart will always prevail over doubt. In average terms, it just means that you must have Faith and allow it to see you through."
