Two months. Two long months since the attack on the club and her subsequent injuries. Not once in those two long months had she been able to get her husband to talk about what had happened.
First, it had been her own inability to speak with her throat sore and ravaged and then it had been Max's retreat behind a wall she couldn't climb. By the time she had been able to talk without pain, he had begun to avoid being in the same room with her and things had become unbearable in the last few weeks. Everyone in the house was feeling the effects and even little Sebastian knew something was really wrong.
Torn and unsure of what to do, Lexi had finally sent Betsy, Bastian and Ben off for the evening and arranged for them to finally have the night to themselves. One way or another, her husband was going to speak to her tonight or she was going to know why.
Hearing the sound of the garage door shutting, the elegant blond moved towards the door of the study and leaned on it as she awaited Max's appearance. There was a determined set to her shoulders even as her eyes glinted with worry.

Time seemed to move slowly since the events in the New Year’s party. Lexi was healing well and all the mess with the vampires was mostly neatly swept under the carpet. Regardless, it didn’t sit well at all with the hunter, over his head lingered the shameful knowledge that he hadn’t been strong and fast enough to come through with his promise, to not let that monster hurt his wife.
And as much as he loved her more than he could put in words, he was barely able to face her with that knowledge in his mind. It made him feel short of what she and Sebastian deserved him to be, what his ego and conscience needed him to be. If he couldn’t protect those he most cared for, what was he worth of? Certainly not the hero he needed to be.
So instead of voicing his concern, he decided to avoid it as long as he was able to. He knew her, knew that she wouldn’t appreciate his thoughts and that she loved him too much to accept that thought, but it was there for him, as clear as water. He had been tested and found unworthy.
Wandering through the door with the groceries Betsy had asked him to get for dinner. Between the housekeeper, Sebastian and Ben, Max felt some comfort that they would keep both him and Lexi busy enough to talk about it. But hope wavered when he saw Lexi standing there with that look on her face.
Looking away, he placed the groceries in the table. “Hey honey, where is Betsy? I got the groceries she asked for…dinner should be up soon, I better go see what Bastian and Ben are up to, they are too quiet…”

Pushing away from the office doorway, Lexi arched a brow and then shook her head. Her expression was stern as she tapped her fingers on her crossed arms. Dressed in a sophisticated black hip hugging skirt and a warm v-necked sweater, she was the picture of grace even as her long hair was up swept into an elegant coiffure that exposed the still reddened mark at her throat.
She'd intentional left the mark exposed knowing it would trigger her husbands emotions and hopefully be a catalyst to lancing the wound that festered between them. God knew something had to give and she knew it couldn't be the love they shared.
"No, Mr. Blair. Not this time. Your time of running is over." she said simply. "The kids are gone and we have the house to ourselves. Betsy won't mind if the groceries set for a bit and we need to talk. You might as well get your butt in here because I'm not going to allow you to escape."
Turning back into the room, the elegant blond moved into the huge study and waited until her husband followed. She could read him easily and it was obvious that he wasn't happy with her summons but that was just to damned bad. He was to freaking stubborn for his own good and he was just going to have to get over it or she would know why.
Shutting the mahogany door and then locking it, Lexi took a moment to tuck the key into the bodice of her fuzzy, curve hugging sweater. Neither one of them would be leaving this room until something was resolved and she'd be damned if she'd leave the key in the lock. It would be to easy for him to set her aside and escape. That she simply could not, WOULD NOT, let happen. She wasn't a witch for nothing, you know!
Turning back to Max, she watched as he pretended to ignore her and stalk around the desk. As he immediately started flipping through papers as if she wasn't even there, her temper spiked. Taking refuged in the familiar warmth of anger, she straightened her shoulders and prepared for battle. Two could play this little game.
One slim blond brow furrowed, Lexi strolled forward and placed her palms on the smooth wood. Her blue gaze was crystal bright as she leaned over the desk and locked on his darker one. He wanted to play games? Well, she was having none of it. One way or another, he was going to talk and she was going to bet the highest stakes of all. Their future. Failure was not an option.
"So..... When are you going to tell me whats bothering you? We both know that you've been out of sorts since the New Years attack and we both know why. Unless we talk about it.... Its going to destroy us... And we have more at stake here besides you and I. Bastian and Ben are both a part of this and we can't let this rip our family apart. If we do.. Then Luka wins.... "She fired off, deciding that being on the offensive was better than the silence. "I've never known you for a coward so don't start being one now.... We both knew that Luka would show back up sooner or later... However, now that we know he's here.. we can make a battle plan. "
Knowing her words were a deliberate challenge, Lexi pulled back and let them have some impact before she continued.
"You knew going into this that being with me wasn't going to be a walk in the park, Maximilian Blair. You knew that I came with baggage and you knew that we'd run into... issues. I'm not about to let you take back your oaths to love and honor me just because you feel that some asinine bloodsucker has insulted your pride... The way you've been avoiding me and leaving the room every time I enter it for the last two months is the last thing I expected out of you. You want to be upset? FINE! Be upset! But turn it into anger and help me come up with a plan to destroy the bastard instead of letting it tear US apart....You haven't slept in our bed in weeks and I'm tired of sleeping alone... Its time you got back to being the man I love and the man I've always admired. I want my husband back, Max, and i want him back NOW!"

Stopped in his tracks, Max heard the words professed by his wave and growled inwardly. What a way to make him feel trapped without anywhere to run to…One thing he always hated was this feeling of being powerless in any given situation, especially when it made him feel like he was unfit to be her husband, to protect her like a man should…and now…now she was pushing him into a conversation he didn’t want to have, to admit such a weakness.
So it was way too obvious on his features that he wasn’t pleased at all. Lexi could be so maddening at times, so infuriating even if it was a trait that he admired about her, that fire…that passion.
The sound of a door locking behind him never seemed so loud, and the cornered hunter did the only thing he could and started to act casually and pretend to fiddle through the business contracts on top of the desk.
When Alexis started talking, he was silently listening in. The New Year’s attack, she was wasting no time and going straight to the point, wasn’t her? By no way he wanted to let this affect his family, hell, he loved them more than anything! But the truth was, he was unfit to protect his wife, Ben and Sebastian and they deserved much more than this.
"I've never known you for a coward so don't start being one now....”
And with those words, Max felt his blood boil in his veins and his brow furrowed in anger. He had never been a coward in his life, sure he had been avoiding facing his inadequacy, but far from a coward…
“HOW DARE YOU?” he burst in anger, “HOW DARE YOU CALL ME A COWARD? YOU’RE MY LIFE, YOU, SABASTIAN AND BEN! I WOULD DIE FOR YOU! AND I…I CAN’T…”
And his voice trailed off before he blurted out how weak he felt, he wasn’t mad at her, no, he was mad at himself.
“Dammit Lexi…” he said slamming his fist into the desk, “don’t go there…”
But she did, she kept talking, kept pushing the issue. God, how he’d love if that bloodsucker bastard was right there so he could rip the monster apart, limb from limb, with his bare hands.
His eyes were locked on his wife blue gems when he started speaking again.
“What you want me to say Lexi? That I failed to come through with my promise that I wouldn’t let that monster hurt you again? That I was incapable of protecting you like a man should protect his wife? That I’m just a man and you deserve more?”
Letting his body collapse into the chair, the dark haired hunter sighed.
“You know I love you Lexi, more than anything, and I would die gladly if it would save you…but it seems like I’m nothing more than a mere nuisance adrift in a game of beings way more powerful than me.”

Lexi knew she was playing with fire. She knew that poking a sleeping lion could very well backfire but she didn't have any other recourse. She wasn't about to let Max retreat behind a wall that she couldn't reach beyond. They'd been through to much to simply let it go and if anger was what it would take to get him to talk then by the gods she'd use it. That emotion she could handle and harness for the good but she couldn't stand the avoidance and misery she saw in his face every time she looked at him.
When his gaze shot to hers, the blond was gratified to see fury blazing in his dark depths. Her words were having their desired effects and she wasted no time battering at his defenses. Even when his fist hit the desk in a storm of anger, she simply arched a brow and stared right back at him with a definantly tipped chin.
“What you want me to say Lexi? That I failed to come through with my promise that I wouldn’t let that monster hurt you again? That I was incapable of protecting you like a man should protect his wife? That I’m just a man and you deserve more?”
Why oh why oh WHY couldn't they just be a normal couple? Just for once, have everything be blissfully without turmoil or strife? Lexi HATED hearing the defeat in his voice and she would have given anything to wipe it away. Unfortunately, fate had dealt them a harsher hand and she could only work with what they'd been given. She knew it wasn't easy on Max but she truly believe that he was one of the strongest men she'd ever known and there wasnt anyone she would rather have at her side in a battle.
Watching him sink into the desk chair, the young nephilim navigated to the other side and leaned on the edge. Her gaze was intense as he spoke again.
“You know I love you Lexi, more than anything, and I would die gladly if it would save you…but it seems like I’m nothing more than a mere nuisance adrift in a game of beings way more powerful than me.”
Shaking her head, the blond crossed her arms over her front and eyed him levelly.
"Max, I know you love me but you obviously underestimate yourself. Its not like any of use knew that Luka was going to attack that night and not even all of us combined could take him out. He still remains at large even though I believe we did some damage. I have no doubt that sooner or later he will try again. You will have your shot at him then.... But you can't turn your back on the facts or pretend that it was anything more than it was. It was an suprise and I don't hold you responsible for anything that happened."
Struggling for words to get her feelings across, she continued.
"You are my life... you, Bastian, and Ben are the very air I breath and you've worked hard to make a home where we are safe and happy. Not many men could deal with the history that we have and still remain so strong... Don't give up on me now... Please...."

What was the hunter to do? His first brush with the supernatural had been one that had chilled him to his core. He had been a powerless witness as he watched a demon use him to brutally kill an innocent family. He was there, saw every sick detail with his own eyes, felt the demon reveling in the kill. A fact that would give him nightmares for years to come, something wasn’t still completely behind him and he doubted someday completely would. It was the reason he afterwards sought out the hunter that had exorcized the demon and begged him to train him. Max needed to find atonement for not being able to stop what had happened, he needed to be a hero for his own sanity sake.
And then there was Lexi, the love of his life, someone he could draw strength from. The only person he had ever confessed about the events that turned him into a hunter and she had said he was free of guilty. He wanted to believe her, to be the man she believed him to be, to match the ideal she had of him.
The day his son was born had been the happiest day of his life, he had a family now, it had scared him, but it was like a page had been turned. He wasn’t the guilt ridden man anymore, he had a wife and son to live for now. Two sons actually.
But the fact that he had almost lost his wife a second time to a psychotic vampire had his perfect little world crumbling down. Once again he was that inadequate young man, chasing after the hunter, desperately begging him to train him and give him the tools to fight back. Max knew that if he was to lose Lexi, Bastian or Ben, that his life would be over, simply as that.
Rising from the chair, he grabbed his wife by his shoulders and looked deep into her eyes. “I thought I was going to lose you again Lexi…I fought as hard as I could and still it wasn’t enough. The fact that it wasn’t expected isn’t an excuse! I should have been faster, stronger. I want to be the man you believe me to be…but what if…I’m not? I…couldn’t stop the demon back them…couldn’t stop Luka when it showed at our doorstep and I couldn’t stop him now!”
Letting go of her, Max looked away. He didn’t want her to see the rage and shame in his eyes. There was fear, yes, but it was the fear of losing her.
“I’m with you Lexi, I’m with you to the end. My life is yours and I will fight for you while I have a breath left on me, you can count on that.”
As much as it pained him, his failures, giving her up wasn’t an option, he’d rather die first.

Sighing, Lexi didn't know whether to shake him or hug him. This seemed to be a never ending cycle they were forced into and there was no light at the end of the tunnel at the moment.
"Max, I wasn't making excuses. I was simply stating fact. Erik and should have been more careful ourselves but we didn't expect an attack of that magnitude. If anyone is at fault... Its me. Innocent people lost their lives that night because of a grudge that they had nothing to do with. How do you think that makes me feel? To know that civilians were slaughtered because Luka wanted to get to me? It tears me to pieces... But I know that some things just happen and theres nothing we can do or say to alter them. We simply have to move on from here."
With her emotions shifting inwardly, Lexi felt her powers swirl and center. Closing her eyes for a moment, she fought to keep control but sensed, rather than felt, the house tremble. A rueful look crossed her face when she finally looked back at him and sighed.
"I know you love me, baby. I have never questioned that. However, I sense that your on some sort of verge where the wrong decision could change our lives forever. Just promise me you wont do anything reckless, OK? The boys and I need you to much to lose you. You may not realize it but we rely on you for a lot."
Then, scooting back on the desk a bit, she wrapped her feet around his legs and pulled him closer to her. When he was close enough, she wrapped her arms around his waist and forced him to look at her.
"And no more sleeping on the couch, got it? Or the next time we have a talk its going to be me kicking your butt instead of all this chit chat!"

His eyes turned to focus on an empty spot on the wall so his wife couldn’t see the turmoil in them, Max felt he had to be strong, for both of their sakes. But nothing had prepared for the next words Lexi spoke. She felt responsible for what had happened? How could she feel responsible for the deaths caused by a monster that wanted her dead?
The hunter could feel a light tremble around him and knew immediately what it was. Lexi’s powers were connected to her emotions and this was affecting her deeply.
“I would never do anything that would endanger you or the kids. And I fully intent on not leaving you guys anytime soon. Remember when we married and I told you we were stuck together? You aren’t getting hid of me so easily baby.”
Smiling as she pulled him closer, Max stared deeply into her eyes. “Good! Because I miss you,” he said placing a soft kiss on her lips, “I miss how your kisses taste…” and then her buried his nose in her neck for a moment, “and I miss the way your perfume smells.”
Moving a golden lock of hair to tuck it behind her ear, he stared at her beautiful features. “I’m married to a goddess after all, and it is insanity not to want to be close to you. I’m sorry baby…you said you want your husband back? Well, here he is,” he added placing a kiss into her lips.

Relief was the foremost emotion that swept through Lexi as she felt Max relax a bit. Things were far from settled but as least maybe now they could start working through it instead of ignoring it. Desire quickly swept away the relief as his lips touched her and his words teased a sexy laugh from her throat.
"Hmmmm you think its going to be that easy, do you??"she said with a grin. "OK, Ok... I think you may be right.. But you've got some making up to do...."
Letting her hands tug his shirt from the waist band of his pants, she slipped her fingers underneath to the warm flesh that she loved. The skin jumped at her light touch and her own blood heated in response. Yeah, things might have been screwed up between them but she'd never doubted their love. They'd been through worse and they would surely go through more but this feeling would always remain the same.
Running her hands up his back, Lexi raised the material a bit and pressed a kiss to his hard abdomen. Grinning impishly, she gave him a seductive look from under her lashes and nipped at him softly.
"Hmmmm.... This seems very familiar... Remember the last fight we had in this very room?" she drawled huskily before letting go of him in order to reach up and take the long pins from her hair.
As each one came undone, long locks of blond hair spilled over her shoulders and down her back until she was able to shake it out and lean back with her palms on the desk. Watching him with dark, passion filled eyes, Lexi arched a brow at him.
"If I remember right.... This very desk was involved" she teased, invitation in her voice."As much as I hate fighting... Making up is always nice....."

It was way too easy to get lost in the witch’s spell. She never did fail to arouse desire in his depths, all she had to do was look his way and BAM! he craved for her as he did in that first night back in Oklahoma, even more in fact.
A little chuckle left Max as she teased him, it was good to know he hadn’t lost his charm after all. Their relationship hadn’t been a walk in the park like she had put it, there had been several obstacles along the way, probably there would be even more, but all it did was to strengthen the love they feel for each other.
Letting her to play with his shirt, Max stared at his wife, still the sexiest woman he had ever set eyes upon. Marriage hadn’t changed it, reinforced that notion instead and he couldn’t believe how lucky he was to have her in his life like this. Neither the demons of hell nor the angels of heaven could stand before their love.
And yes, he remembered quite well the last time they had a fight in that room. “Best fight I’ve ever had in my life,” he said smiling fondly, “Alright, every time we have a fight, I’m dragging you to this very room.”
As she teased him and leaned on the desk, Max could feel his blood heating and his eyes darkened with a deep desire. With a move of his hand, he tossed to the floor everything that was on top of that desk. As the stack of folders, loose papers and telephone made a mess into the floor, he turned his attention to his wife with a wicked smile and got rid of his shirt.
“Let’s see if we can outdo our last fight?” he said taking her in his arms and pulling her up so she was sitting on the desk. His hand moved to the hem of her sweater, slowly pulling it up before placing kisses and nibbles on the exposed skin.
Got to love those strong, old style large desks.

In your arms I think I've found the safest place to fall When I step in the door and I stare at your face There are so many things that I wish I could say Well I struggle with words but they put up a fight You can keep your mouth shut, because it doesn't really matter tonight I will guide you all the way Because I know exactly what you're trying to say You have the right to remain silent I'll get the light ...You get that smile And you say nothing at all Well I couldn't have said it better myself Tonight the conversation takes the fall Just love me like you love nobody else Holy Hell, he couldn't have read her mind any better. Grinning like a Cheshire cat, Lexi watched Max through slitted eyes and licked her bottom lip. The heat in her husbands gaze was enough to make her almost melt into a pool of drooling flesh but what really turned her on was when his strong arm reached out and sent everything on the desk tumbling to the ground. A throaty little laugh escaped her throat as he finished the work she'd started on his shirt and tossed it to join the rest of the mess. As he leaned in close, her breath caught and she almost panted in desire. All right, so there were just times when a woman had to give thanks to whatever being created such a perfect picture of male.
All that rippling muscle and lean flesh. To wonder lust was one of the ten cardinal sins. He was just so delicious looking, she wanted to nibble and lick him until there was nothing else left. Add some chocolate syrup on that and she'd be in absolute freaking heaven. No one else had ever effected her senses in this way and no one else every would. He might not think he was much but to her, he was everything.
"Hmmmmm.... I think that I like the way YOU think.. " she drawled out with a sexy purr as her own sweater joined his shirt on the floor.
Even as she spoke, the atmosphere in the room seemed to spike and her dark eyes glinted with suppressed emotion. Wrapping her legs around his, the young nephilim pulled his lower body tight against hers and laced one hand through his dark hair.
"I seem to recall the house almost coming down on us last time... You sure it can with stand another bout of our fighting?" she teased, using her free hand to trace the possession rune on his chest. "I'm willing to test it if you are...."
Squirming a bit, Lexi felt her skirt slid up and she impishly leaned forward to nip at his heated skin. The groan that met her eyes was more than enough to spin her desire out of control and she knew that neither one of them was going to be able to hold out long. It had simply been to long. She wanted him and she wanted him NOW.
Even as that thought ran through her mind, the house shook as her pulse hiked to higher peaks. The shutters on the outside rattled and lights flickered. Neither one of the pair noticed though as their passions were cut loose and reality was lost.

There was something about a gorgeous blonde with blue eyes, a face of an angel and with curves on all the right places that made his heart go wild. This woman was his definition of sexy, hell, she was the word’s definition of beauty. It was impossible for a red blooded man to not be fascinated by her, to not want her.
Max could feel the flash of heat emanating from her skin as much as it did from his. It was obvious in his gaze that he wanted to devour her whole as his mouth clashed against hers in a heated kiss as Max nibbled on her lower lip before pulling back for air.
“Let’s bring this house down then, let it fall to dust around us. You wanted your husband back, and I want you NOW!”
A wicked grin showed on his features and tearing every bit of cloth between them, he pulled her body close to his, joining her on top of the table. Her sexy purr urged him forward, made desire burn strong in his chest.
Max could never have enough of this woman, his goddess. As long as he held breath and one ounce of strength in his body, he would desire her with all his soul. And inevitably, the world around him lost focus and faded like it was an illusion, something of no importance. All that existed was her and the sweet voice of her moan as he kissed her.

Because of you I forgot the smart ways to lie Because of you I'm running out of reasons to cry When the friends are gone, When the party's over We will still belong to each other Underneath Your Clothes There's an endless story There's the man I chose , There's my territory And all the things I deserve for being such a good girl, honey There were stories passed down generation to generation of loves that could move mountains and steal the very stars from the sky. Lexi had never been a believer of such things until that fateful night almost 2 years ago when she'd meet a mysterious, darkly handsome man who had stolen her heart like a thief in the night.
At the time, she'd had no idea what fate had had in store for them but it had turned out to truly be the stuff of legends. From the first touch to this very moment, theirs had never been a calm, well thought out passion but the sort that moved the very foundation of their souls. Tonight was no different. In more ways than one.
As the couple came together once more, the ground trembled from the suppressed powers that fairly electrified the air. The house shuttered and lights flickered until eventually settling down into relative normalcy. Gradually, the atmosphere shifted and a feeling of peace seemed to touch on the place as a car pulled up the drive and the doors were unlocked.
Betsy, curious to find out what had happened while she was out and if both Max and Lexi were all right, headed straight for the study. During the commotion of earlier, the lock had come undone and the door was slightly ajar. Completely unsuspecting, the housekeeper pushed open the door to call in.
"Mr. Blair? Ms. Lexi? OH MY GOD!"
Having fallen asleep in a pile on the floor in front of the fireplace, Lexi's blond head popped up at the sound of Betsy's voice. Seeing the back of the woman, she groaned and looked at her laughing husband.
"Damn it! THATS THE SECOND TIME!" she hissed before sitting up and being at least grateful they had snagged a blanket off the sofa. "We really gotta get the locks replaced..."

When Nicholas had talked about Melissa, he had spoken about one woman that rocked his world. And to Max that was the trouble of marriage, ONE woman. For a playboy whose relationships rarely lasted more than one week and moved from a woman to the next, the thought of being attached to one single woman was unbearable. But there was that fateful day that a complete stranger with golden hair, face of an angel and a killer body…a true goddess…crossed his path. And by the end of that week period, he discovered he couldn’t get enough of her. That woman had captured his attention like none other had before. It was in the long weekend that they spent in Spain that he started to really fall for her, even if he took him longer to admit it to himself. It wasn’t a perfect relationship, there were obstacles that at one point or another seemed insuperable and they actually drifted apart a couple of times due to their stubbornness, but in the end, their love prevailed. Just like his brother, Max had found a woman that rocked his world. And now? Now she was the only woman he desired, the woman he wanted to grow old next to, if he could manage this, he knew his life would be one worth living. No matter the obstacles that fate laid in their way, he wouldn’t let anything keep them apart. But as he laid there on the floor next to her, a familiar voice intruded on his awareness and he raised his head to look towards the door and groaned. “Peeping Betsy! I swear, the woman must have a radar or something!” "We really gotta get the locks replaced..." Max looked at his wife and shook his head, “I’m tying a bell on her neck so she doesn’t sneak up on us like that again!” Giving a slight smirk to his wife, he buried his head in her shoulder. “You do know she is going to look funny at us for at least a month now, don’t you? She will be thinking of me as the dirty boy, while she will call you the sweet girl and bake you cookies, not fair!” (Haha! It has a nice symmetry)
