(Thread done as a JP by Curse and Jo)
Jo sat in the passenger seat of the big Dodge truck. Trying to keep the smirk off her face as she glanced over and saw the deep crevices that came from worry etched into her husband’s forehead.
"Relax would you Curse... It's a doctor's office... Not a torture chamber... Everything will be fine. Trust me. It's just a routine thing."
The whole ride over to the doctor's office Curse had stayed mostly quiet. She knew he was worrying about her about the baby about everything. Sighing softly she just hoped that this visit would put him at ease. Getting it over with for him so he could get used to the idea. She knew it wasn't easy for him and she loved him for pushing his issues aside and coming with her. Though she did suspect that the fact he was going to be able to hear his babies heartbeat had something to do with it.
Scared as they both were about becoming parents. They both were also excited and happy about it. Something like actually hearing the baby's heartbeat would make it seem more real. Something that Curse hadn't gotten to experience yet. As they pulled into the parking lot of the doctor's office. Curse parked the truck. Jo got out quickly and waited for Curse to come around so they could walk inside together.
In truth, the hunter didn't really know why he'd agreed to go with his wife to this appointment beside the fact that he'd gotten her into it. The whole truth of her pregnancy was setting in along with a very real fear for her health. He had seen how sick the first trimester stuff had made her and it had driven him about insane.Just the thought of losing her made him insane.
On that thought, Curse got out of the huge black 4 wheel drive and walked around to the passenger side. HIs wife stood waiting quietly and he took a deep breath before reaching out and taking her hand.
"Well, here we are... Let’s get this show on the road. Can't be as bad as I'm imagining now can it? After all, it’s you whose going to be the patient." he said, trying to sound upbeat.
Turning towards the clinic, he pulled her along and opened the front door. Following after her, the handsome hunter took note of the other fathers to be and that they looked almost as nervous as he did. That made him feel just a bit better.
As Jo filled out the needed paperwork, he sat quietly and tried to gather his thoughts. By the time the nurse called them back, his palms were ringing wet. Giving his wife a look, he stood to the aside and let the doctor examine his wife as he tapped fingers on the table.
Jo was glad to see the other fathers in the waiting area. She hoped it would be something that made Curse more comfortable. After going up to the counter and checking in for her appointment she sat next to Curse while they waited. It didn't take long and they were called back. The nurse was friendly and took Jo through the basic routine of getting her weight, temp, and blood pressure. All the basic before she told her to hop up on the exam table. Telling them the doctor would be in shortly she left them alone.
It wasn't long before the doctor came in with Jo's chart in hand. The doctor was a woman and hopefully that would make things easier on Curse as well. The woman studied the chart and then looked up and smiled at Jo.
"Well, I have gotten your records sent from Oklahoma. It seems that you lost some weight. But, this time it seems that you have held your own. Pretty much evened out. So that's better but still, you need to actually gain some weight."
Jo nodded at the doctor. "I know. It's been a lot better lately. So I'm working on it." Jo laid back and the doctor started examining her. Making little small talk as she went along. Jo looked over at Curse to try and gage how he was doing and he still seemed be anxious but doing ok.
The doctor pulled out the pre-natal stethoscope and got ready to listen to the baby's heartbeat. Before she placed the instrument on Jo's belly the doctor looked over at Curse. "Have you heard your baby's heartbeat yet? I am assuming you are the father. You got that 'new father' face on." The doctor chuckled and went about checking for the heartbeat.
Jo tried to stay relaxed and let the doctor do her business and kept her eye on her husband. Half thinking he might run out the door any minute. Then the doctor made and odd little face that caught Jo's attention.
She moved the stethoscope around on Jo's belly and made a kind of "Hmmmmm" sound. Jo raised her eyebrows and looked up at the doctor as the doctor stood up. "What is it? Is there something wrong? “Jo turned and looked over at Curse. Now she was a little worried. Waiting for the doctor to respond she grabbed hold of Curse's hand and held onto it so he couldn't go far from the exam table.
Curse listened with half an ear at the talk that whirled around him. The doctor who came in had been a woman so that put him a bit more at ease but he was still a bit off center.
Averting his eyes while the main examination was done, he started counting the seconds in his brain but looked back when the doctor started talking about hearing the heartbeat. He was just in time to see the funny look cross her face and Jo ask if there was something wrong. Panic caused his heart to lodge in his throat as she grabbed his hand and squeezed it.
"Doc?" he asked with a tremor. "What is wrong?"
Shaking her head, the doctor looked up and put the stethoscope around her neck.
"Nothing is wrong... but I want to have an ultrasound done while you are here today. I just want to check out the fetus and make sure everything is as it should be. Jo's measurements are a bit large for how far along she should be and I just want to double check our due date." she explained, hoping to allay her patient’s fears.
"We can do that right here so you can relax for a bit while I make the arrangements."
Smiling at them, the woman stood up and left the room to do just that. After she went, Curse turned to his wife and put an arm around her.
"I'm sure everything is fine. Maybe this is just normal procedure. Let’s just wait and see what is going on."
For long moments, they were quiet as they waited for the doctor to come back. When she did, she held the door open so a huge machine could be wheeled in.
Jo took in a deep breath and just nodded as the doctor talked. Explaining what she was going to do. Jo was grateful that Curse was there and leaned into him when he put his arm around her. For all his resistance about not liking doctors he sure stood up when it counted.
His words were comforting even though Jo thought he was probably worried behind them. "I know. It's just... She said I'm 'bigger' than I should be. How could that be when I lost all that weight and everything? Maybe the other doctor made a mistake and I am farther along than they thought.... but still..." Jo stopped there.
She was trying to sort it out in her own mind. Well at least if the baby was growing that had to be good didn't it? Even if she lost weight... From what the doctor in Oklahoma told her that meant that the baby was taking what it needed from her. Which wasn't so good for Jo but at least the baby was getting what it needed.
Jo took a few deep breaths, trying to stay calm. It wouldn't do to panic. It could just be nothing. An ultrasound. They did those on pregnant women all the time. Jo just hadn't expected to have one yet. She blinked a little in shock when she saw the machine they wheeled in.
Looking over at Curse she chewed on her lip a little. The machine was intimidating. This was all new to Jo and up until now she had been dealing pretty well. The doctor apparently saw the look on her face and spoke to reassure her.
"Don't worry. It's just a standard ultrasound machine. It's perfectly routine. We just normally would have done your first ultrasound on your next visit. But if you’re farther along than we thought we just want to find that out for sure."
That sounded logical to Jo. She did have to admit, the way things happened with her and Curse being a little of on the date of conception wouldn't be a big surprise. Jo relaxed a little as the doctor came over after the machine was set up. She squeezed out some cold gel stuff on her stomach and then started pushing the ultrasound tool around her belly.
Pushing the gel around and watching the machine. The machine lit up and you could see the picture that looked like some weird black and white snowy TV picture.
A thought came to Jo as she watched the monitor. "Oh... by the way. We don't want to find out the sex of the baby until it's born. Uh.. You know. So I mean... .We’re not going to be able to see on that are we?"
The doctor chuckled a bit. "No, not at this point anyway. Still too soon to tell that from an ultrasound, but I'll make note of that for the future."
The doctor kept swiping the bar across her belly... her eyes intent on the screen. "Hmmmmm..... Uh huh.... It is what I suspected."
Jo's eye got wide again and she looked over at Curse. "Uh.... What do you mean? What did you suspect?" Jo was a little surprised. It didn't seem as if the doctor was worried at all. It was the only thing that was keeping Jo from freaking out was that the doctor had a smile on her face.
Curse was on the edge of his seat as the doctor went about preparations. He could only hold his wife’s hand and stare at the TV screen as she glided the probe around and suddenly Curse could see pair of what looked like ... feet?
For a long moment, he could only stare and he heard the doctor’s words. Casting her funny look, he glanced back at the screen and felt his stomach bottom out. Staring at it incredulously for a long moment, the young man blinked rapidly and asked.
"Is that what I think it is?? We're having TWINS?? HOLY HELL"
And with that, the fearless hunter passed out cold.
Jo was waiting for someone to say something. Holding onto Curse's hand. He had his eyes glued to the screen and he figured it out before Jo did.
She blinked rapidly a few times and stared at her husband as he said what he was thinking. Jo squinted and looked closer at the screen and just as she saw what all the fuss was about. Curse had hit the floor.
Jo looked from her husband on the floor back to the doctor. Her mouth had fallen open. She wasn't sure she could speak.
"He's not right is he? That... Oh ... that's just like a shadow or something right?"
Jo couldn't quite wrap her head around it. She watched as the doctor went to one of the cupboards and grabbed what Jo assumed were smelling salts/ammonia capsules talking as she did so.
"Yes, your husband got it right on the button. I thought when I was listening to the heartbeat earlier that I heard two of them. That and your being a little bigger than for this stage I wanted to check my suspicions. You are most definitely having twins."
Jo started sucking in deep gulping breaths.... trying to take in what the doctor was telling her. At the same time she watched as the doctor snapped the capsule and waved it under Curse's nose and went about helping him up and getting him sat in a chair next to the exam table. Then the nurse chuckled.
"You know.... This always happens when people find out about twins. Everyone alright now? Just give yourself a few minutes to adjust. Other than the twin thing everything is perfectly fine. You do need to make sure you are eating though. You definitely need to keep yourself better nourished now."
The doctor looked at them and took up Jo's chart.
"I'll give you two a few minutes while I got make some notes then I'll have the nurse pop back in to set you up for your next appointment. Really, don't worry. Everything is fine. "
Jo watched as the doctor left the room. The last picture of the ultrasound was still up on the screen. Jo looked between that and Curse. She didn't know what to say. Trying to talk no words would come out. Her mouth had gone completely dry and she had no idea how she didn't faint dead away at the news.
A god awful smell brought Curse back to his senses and hands gently helped the stunned hunter to his feet. When they pushed him back into the chair, he shook his head to clear it and blinked at his wife wobbly.
Gulping a bit, he half heard what the doctor was saying and then heard the sound of the door shutting as she gave the couple a few moments alone.
"T..... TV... Twins?? We're having.... TWINS?" he blurted out and then had to steady himself again."Damn, woman.... How many heart attacks are you going to give me?"
Glancing from his wife’s face to the TV screen, Curse felt as if his whole world was taking on new dimensions. The babies were clearly visible upon the machine and he felt himself rising to his feet. Reverently, he reached out and touched the images before swallowing hard and realizing he had tears in his eyes. Incredible love for those beings filled him and he knew that his life would never be the same.
"Darlin.... Looks like we need to expand that nursery..." he drawled when he was finally able to talk again.
Jo licked her lips and stared at her husband for what seemed like the longest time. Still in disbelief but seeing the look on Curse's face she knew it was all true.
She was glad that he was talking because she still couldn't... But she watched as he touched the screen and her heart melted when she saw the look on his face.
When he turned back to her and spoke all she could do was smile. It was one of her most favorite things in the world now was to hear him call her "Darlin'". That one statement was all it took for her to know that ever thing was going to be ok.
That Curse was ok with it and that they really were going to have twins. Two babies instead of one. The emotion finally got to her and she felt tears fall from her eyes. Reaching out she grabbed Curse's hand and pulled him as close to her as she could.
She looked up at him from the exam table.
"You know how much I love you? I never thought... I never thought I'd have any of this... We're going to have twins and I'm scared to death but I love you so much and I know everything will be fine."
Jo tried to keep herself calm. Not sure what to do now. It was a huge thing they just found out. She let herself fall back onto the pillow on the exam table and just laid there for a minute. Taking it all in.
Moving closer to his wifes side, Curse smiled down at her and then leaned down to kiss her brow gently.
“Yeah.. Its going to be fine, Darlin. Instead of one blessing to welcome into the world, we are going to have two.. I would say we are going to be doubly fine.”
And deep in his heart, Curse knew he was right.
After a few minutes the nurse came back in. She smiled at them and told Jo she could go ahead and get up and get dressed. While Jo was getting dressed the nurse pressed a few buttons on the machine and some printouts popped out. She slipped them into a manilia envelope and handed them to Curse.
"There you go.... the first pictures or your babies. And here is the time and date of your next appointment. And we're all done here." The nurse handed over an appointment slip with the pictures and walked out of the room.
Jo just stared at Curse. She was dressed now but still in kind of a daze. "I'm ready to go home now." Is about all she could manage to say this time.
Nodding his agreement, Curse put his arm around his wife and lead her out of the doctors office and into a bright new life.
Jo sat in the passenger seat of the big Dodge truck. Trying to keep the smirk off her face as she glanced over and saw the deep crevices that came from worry etched into her husband’s forehead.
