It had been 2 weeks since Sammie had gotten the shock of her life and she still hadn't spilled the beans to Sam. She's wracked her mind trying to come up with a way to tell him but nothing seemed quite right. After all, how did you tell someone that their life was about to take an unexpected detour from the path they thought they were destined to live. It wasn't exactly the easiest thing to just drop into the middle of a conversation.
Sighing, Sammie tucked a long lock of hair behind her ear and glared at the objects on the shelf of the grocery store. It was Friday evening and she had the night off so she had planned on having cozy time with her man and a movie. Finger food and snacks had sounded appealing so here she was tossing things haphazardly into the cart.
As she shopped, she debated the million and one ways she could possibly break the news to her lover and was just picking up a bag of tortilla chips when a ben of games caught her eye and one in particular jumped out at her. SCRABBLE. As suddenly as that word registered, she KNEW how she was going to do it. Pouncing on the board game, she smiled evilly and then hurriedly made her way to the counter to check out. Soon, she was on her way home with her bounty and a suprised Sam would NEVER forget.
30 minutes later
Unlocking the apartment door, Sammie twisted the doorknob and trudged into the rooms. Tossing the keys on the hallway table, she slipped into the kitchen and then plopped the bags of groceries on the island.
"Sam?? Honey? I'm home!" she called out as she started to put the cold items in the fridge and then arrange the other munchies in a neat line on the table
Sam had just stepped out of the shower. He towel dried his hair briefly and then wrapped a towel around his waist. Just as he was about to go across the hall to the bedroom and get dressed he heard Sammie call out to him.
Changing his direction he turned down the hall and walked to the kitchen. Smiling at her as he watched her putting groceries away and laying out food on the table. "Hey baby, just got out of the shower. Obviously."
He moved over to her and wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close to give her a kiss. Looking over all the things she had out on the table he spied the Scrabble game. Raising and eyebrow he gave her a look. "So, what's the plan for the night then? Scrabble? That's a new one. Not that I mind. It could be fun."
He gave her a little half-grin and gave her another peck on the cheek. "I guess I should go get dressed then while you finish setting things up. I'll be back in a minute."
Sam turned then and headed back down the hall, back to the bedroom. He quickly grabbed a pair of jeans and pulled them on and a t-shirt. Since they weren't heading out or anything that would be good for now.
Going back out to the kitchen he found Sammie again. "OK... that's better now. You want a beer Sammie?"
Eyeing him from where she was browning some hamburger for the taco dip, she shook her head and picked up her thing of Tropicana Orange Juice to wave at him. Stepping away from the stove, she said.
"Ok... My turn to shower. Can you keep an eye on this and then put the taco seasoning in it? Just stir it together and then dump it on top of the velveta and salsa mixture in the microwave. I will finish it when I get done and then we can relax in the living room and play a game!"
Without really waiting for him to respond, the pretty brunette went up on tip toes and gave him a little kiss before heading for the bathroom. Grabbing up her soft HELLO KITTY lounge pants and a pick baby doll tshirt, she quickly took a hot shower and mentally prepared herself for the night ahead. Logically, she knew it could ended one of two ways. Either he was going to freak and leave or he was going to freak and promptly have a heartattack before coming to terms with the information overload.
When she could avoid it no longer, she shut off the water and slipped into her pj's. Brushing her long hair quickly, she left it to dry over her shoulders and then headed back out to the main rooms.
Spotting Sam still in the kitchen looking as if he was a bit out of his element, she smiled and went to finish the snacks.
Teasing and laughing, the young couple managed to get everything ready and carried out to the little coffee table before putting down a soft downy blanket to lay on.
Finally plopping down on the floor, Sammie sighed and wiggled her tired feet. It felt good to take a load off and she grinned as she shook the box at her companion.
"So... How smart are you feeling, Winchester?" she teased before tearing the plastic off and opening the Scrabble container to pull out all the pieces.
Sam mumbled a "Yeah, sure." when she asked him to keep an eye on the hamburger. But, he did as instructed... Relieved though when Sammie came back into the kitchen and took over the cooking duties again. He did what he could to help as they moved everything out to the living room.
Sitting down next to Sammie on the blanket Sam chuckled as she taunted him a bit.
"Is that a challenge Miss Rose? Bring it on!" He gave her a wink and watched as she started to open the box.
Sam grabbed the board while she dealt with spreading out the letter tiles. He opened the board and set it down in front of them. When the letters were all laid out they went about the process of picking their tiles and arranging them on their little letter stands.
Sam studied his letters as he took a drink of his beer.
"Ok... Since I am a gentleman... Ladies first." He nodded to her, allowing her to start the game. He munched on some food while he waited to see what she came up with.
Eyeing her letters, Sammie decided to start in with something easy. Her eyes glinted impishly as she spelled out "KISS". When she was finished she waited for him to take in the word and then grabbed him by the shirt front to pull him close enough to do just that. She just couldn't resist the temptation. Once they were both breathless, she broke away grinning madly and picked up a cheeto to munch.
Sam gave her a smirk as he watched her spell out her first word. Responding as she pulled him close to her, he slid his hand under her hair, cupping the back of her neck as he kissed back, matching her enthusiasm.
Giving her another mischievious look he watched as she jotted down the score for her word. "Hey, are you sure I can trust you with that? You're not going to cheat are you?"
Chuckling he turned his attention back to his own letters, then looked at the board. Using one of the "s'es" in kiss he laid down the tiles to spell "SMILE". Then glanced over at the dark haired beauty next to him. "How's that?"
Grinning wildly, Sammie tossed a cheeto puff at him and then took a sip of her sprite.
"Of course I'm trust worthy! Shame on you for suggesting that I would cheat!" she declared with mockingly innocent eyes.
When he spelled out smile, she gave him a grin and then nodded.
"NICE ONE!"
Then, frowning at her own letters again, she squirmed and picked up three to place them on teh board. Spelling out the word, "LOVE" carefully, she sent him a smile.
Sam replenished his tiles while he laughed. He liked seeing her relaxed and having a good time. The last few weeks she's seemed a little less vivacious then usual. First with the whole stomach thing and then she just seemed kind of serious the last two weeks. He was glad to see her smiling and laughing as they played.
When she spelled out "LOVE" he let his gaze catch hers and gave her a soft smile. He actually felt his heart skip a beat at that. This game seemed to be getting interesting.
Taking a tortilla chip and some of the mexican dip he munch for a minute while he studied his letters again.
Finally finding a word in the tiles he laid it out on the board next to the "m" in smile. "MAYBE" ... Sam gave her another grin and a wink.
Smiling at bit at his come back, Sammie tilted her head and stared at the blocks. As she eyed the words on the board, she bit her bottom lip and frowned. Her draws added a few new letters but picking was sparce. Finally, after a quiet few moments, she laided her squares down. "YES"
Sam couldn't help but chew on his lip a bit as Sammie laid down the word yes. Then he leaned down and kissed her softly on the lips. Sitting back up he nodded.
Taking in a deep breath and letting out a bit of a sigh he looked at his tiles again. Laying down his tile this time he spelled out "SWEET" before sipping at his beer again then pulling more tiles from the pile.
Sammie hadn't meant for things to get so deep so fast but obviously they had. She could tell that Sam was getting the drift she was laying out even though it was completely but accident. Staring at the words on the board, she went back to her first word and picked out the other S before spelling out "SECRET". Glancing upward through her lashes, she watched his expression and then sat back.
Sam raised an eyebrow at the next word. Secret? There had seemed to be a theme to the game, but "Secret" didn't seem to fit. At least to Sam. There was nothing secret about them, at least he didn't think so. He'd told her about hunting and the supernatural world he lived in. Something he didn't do with just anyone.
Furrowing his brow he wondered about it while he searched for his next word. This one was a simple one, but it seemed to be appropriate as he spelled out, "TELL". Then looked over at Sammie again with a questioning look.
Avoiding his eyes, Sammie stared at her cubes and then back at the board. Pretending to concentrate, she chose the last L and spelled out "little".
Then, picking up her soda, she took a drink and gave Sam a look over the top.
Sam shook his head. Now really baffled. Maybe there wasn't a theme to this. He had no clue what little could have to do with anything. Except maybe it was a little secret. But what the hell was the secret?
Frowning a bit he tried to get his focus back on the letters in front of him. The next word he spelled out simply said "HELP".
Biting lip, the pretty brunette gazed down at the board and then looked back up at him. Finally, she shrugged and picked out another e and spelled out "NINE".
Sam took a few moments and ate a bit more of the snacks. Going over the words on the board again. He was kind of lost now. So he just figured he needed to find any word he could come up with.
He smiled at her again before he picked out his tiles. Laying down the word "PLEASE" and giving her a pleading look with puppy dog eyes. Now she had him curious as to what was going on.
Ok, so this was getting complicated, Sammie thought to herself. She had thought it would be easy to drop the bomb in this way but it was turning out harder than she thought. She'd given him several clues but there wasn't even a glimmer in his eyes. Taking a deep breath, she finally picked out several letters and lined up "DADDY" on the board.
Sam's eyes widened as Sammie seemed a little exasperated at him when she pulled out letters from the pool of wooden tiles and spelled out "DADDY". He shook his head in bewilderment.
He let out a sigh and gave her a look. "Sammie... I'm not sure what you're trying to say. I mean... I thought you were trying to tell me something. With, KIss, Love, Yes... but then Secret? Little? Nine? Daddy?" When he spoke it out loud it seemed to form a thought in his head. But something he was totally not expecting. He stared at her at a loss for words. It couldn't be THAT? Daddy? Finally all he could stammer out was, "Sammie.... what are you saying?"
Watching him, the young woman say his confusion and heard it in his voice. Even as he was putting them all together she reached out and pulled random letters out of words until one long was was formed on the edge of the board. "PREGNANT" was clear as day as she looked up at him and tried to smile.
"I hope you like kids?" she said with a quiver to her voice.
Sam watched as she started to rearrange letters from the board into one word along the bottom. He read the word and blinked. Looking up at Sammie and then back down at the board again. His breath caught in his throat and he swallowed hard to get past the lump that was there now. He was stunned to say the least. Trying to get a grip on himself he heard the tone of her own voice was a little shaky.
"Sammie... Your... Me? Us?" He tried to think things through in his mind. But, he suddenly found himself trying to catch his breath. Gently taking Sammie by the shoulders he lifted her up so she was sitting directly in front of him. Touching her cheek softly he looked at her intently. "You're serious? You're sure?"
He already knew the answer to that. She wouldn't joke about something like this and he was pretty sure she wouldn't have brought the subject up at all if she hadn't been certain of the fact. All he could think to do was wrap his arms around her and hug her tightly for a long moment.
Knowing the news would take him by suprise, Sammie simply nodded as his questions and then allowed him to pull her close. As he cuddled her, she sighed and tried to explain.
"Yeah.. I'm sure Sam.... Near as I can tell.. I'm about 2 or 2 1/2 months along. I didn't put two and two together until Alice pulled me aside and started asking questions. I've been wondering how to tell you but I couldn't seem to come up with anything that sounded right...I know this wasn't in your plans and .. well... Lets face it... Its not exactly perfect timing."
Biting her lip for a moment, the young woman looked up at him before continueing.
"It was a shock to me too... but.. no matter what happens... I'm having this baby. I want this baby...."
Sam kept his arms around her as she started speaking. Now it was his turn to sit and nod while she tried to explain. When she pulled back to look at him. Her last words rang in his ears. "Sammie... Of course. I would never have thought otherwise. Sammie... this is OUR baby. Regardless of the timing or the circumstances... How can that be a bad thing?"
He pulled her face to his and kissed her passionately. Breaking a part to look at her again. "I'm shocked as hell but that doesn't mean that... Well... I think it needs to sink in a bit, but ... Wow... We're going to have a baby? I'm going to be a father? That's ... it's ... amazing. Really, it is."
She could hear the disbelief and the bemusement in his voice but it wasnt anger or accusations so she figured all in all... It had gone all right. At least he wasn't running for the door or declaring that it wasn't his. Although she wasn't a saint by any means, she hadn't been with anyone but Sam in the last 6 months and she knew without a doubt that Sam was the father.
"I know its going to take some time to get used to the idea, Sam... I've had two weeks almost to try to come to terms with it and figure out what I'm going to do. There are alot of things to take into consideration and factors that need to be reviewed. I obviously wasn't planning on being a mother for a few more years but now that I am... I'm excited about it. I've got some money put away and even though I won't be able to act in the next production at the theater, my boss has assured me that I can help out around the stage and I don't have to worry about my job."
Eyeing him, she reached up to play with his hair.
"I am, however, going to take next semester off of school. There is going to be so much to do getting ready for the baby and the load I would have been taking is pretty heavy. I don't want to risk not being able to concentrat on my classes and losing my GPA that I need to obtain my career goals."
Sam was sitting there with what had to be a dumb founded look on his face. His brain still trying to process what Sammie had just told him. Then as she went on and talked about taking time off from school and everything he realized what a huge change in her life this was going to be. A huge change in both of their lives, but she had so much more to give up than he did.
"Well... Sammie, you know I'm going to be here... This isn't just your responsibility, it's mine too. Wow... being a father, I haven't really thought about it in the sense of it being a reality. You know... just sort of a what if in the future kind of thing. I'm going to be here though... Whatever you need..."
Sam sighed and tightened his arm around her. Still a little bit lost in his own thoughts. This was a big deal. Things had just shifted majorly in Sam Winchester's life. Moving back, the young woman looked up at him and studied his face. Her expression was concerned as she tried to read his thoughts.
"I'm glad to hear that, Sam... I really am.. but what about everything else in your life? Hunting... Armegaddon... your brother...... I don't want to be the thing holding you back from what you are suppose to be doing. Are you going to be happy staying in one place and having a family? Its a pretty serious undertaking...."
Then, least him misunderstand her, she hurried on.
"Please don't misunderstand me, honey... I WANT you here... I just don't want you to feel caged or trapped. No matter what happens... I will never keep your child away from you so you needn't worry on that score. "
Sam squinted up his face and gave Sammie a look. Not sure he was understanding her. "What? Why would I feel trapped? I mean... So we didn't plan on this... But just like you have to change things in your life, so do I now. That's not being trapped. It's... being a family I suppose."
Sam thought about the hunting and staying in one place... and Gah! Having to tell Dean about this. Dean was going to flip out he was sure. But, that really didn't matter what Dean thought. Not in this case. "As far as hunting and all that. I'll have to adapt. You don't hold me back Sammie. You make my life better being in it. A baby... that's just going to be more of the good I think. How could a baby between to people who love each other be something that holds you back?"
Those last words were what softened Sammie more than anything else. Giving him a brilliant smile, she nodded and looked towards the board game.
"I saw this game on the way home and figured this might be better for the telling than handing you the little white stick." Then, grinning, she continued. "Alice wanted me to hire a singing telegram! Be glad I didnt follow her instructions!"
Reaching behind her, the young woman picked up her sprite and waved it in Sam's face.
"There for awhile, I thought maybe you would catch on when you kept asking if I wanted a beer and I kept saying no!"
Sam grinned back at her. "Yeah... well it was an interesting way to broach the subject. I have to admit." Sam chuckled and shook his head at the singing telegram idea. That definitely would have had him passed out on the floor right now. Easing him into it seemed a much better way to go.
Smiling at her when she held up the Spirte. "Honestly Sammie... I had no clue. This totally caught me by surprise. It's a bit crazy in my head right now... But... We'll deal with it right? I mean it will work out. I'm just still a little blown away that I'm gonna be a daddy. There are a lot of things that are going through my mind right now. I'm scared as hell on one hand, but excited at the same time."
Sam's face soften as he looked at her. Then he leaned in to kiss her.
"We're connected now... you and me. I mean... I think we were before, but now... It's more."
Nodding, Sammie leaned back on her elbows and stretched her slender body out on the floor beside him. Her gaze was keen as she watched him and then grew thoughtful.
"It's funny... I had a plan mapped out for my life and it didn't include a child until after I finished my doctrate and made my claim to fame in the spotlight. However, now... Now I find myself strangely happy to be pregnant and a mother to be." she exclaimed softly . "And .. I couldn't think of another man who'd I'd want to share this experience with. Your going to be a great dad... I just know it. I know you have issues and that your past hasnt been great but... I think this is our chance to make up for all that. This baby will never lack in love or affection and it will be a blessing to us both."
Reaching out, she took his hand and gave it a squeeze as she continued.
"That is... if you can put up with my odd cravings and getting as big as a house. I'm not always going to be as agile as I am now! I for see lots of foot massages in your future!"
Sighing, Sammie tucked a long lock of hair behind her ear and glared at the objects on the shelf of the grocery store. It was Friday evening and she had the night off so she had planned on having cozy time with her man and a movie.
