Finding herself at lose ends with Sebastian down for a nap and Max doing something with Bobby, Lexi decided to take a walk and have some time for herself. Leaving Betsy in charge if her little one woke up while she was gone, the pretty blond slipped into a pair of shorts, a swim suit, and a tank top before putting on her running shoes and pulling her hair up in a ponytail. Once she felt she was prepared for the southern heat, the new mother left the house and spent a few moments stretching out before slipping into a slow jog that took her around the sheltering trees on the estate and down the path to the small pond that laid between their place and the Jordans. Although it was only about half a mile there, it was enough to stretch her legs a bit and release a bit of her pent up energy.
Reaching the waterside, Lexi tilted her face to the sun and then glanced around. It was so hot that the cool pond looked inviting so she quickly tossed off her shoes and extra clothing before diving into the water. Laughing with glee at the feeling, the young woman was almost sad she hadn't asked Max along but it was nice to have some peace of her own.
For the next half an hour, she swam and frolicked in the pond before exiting the water and laying out on the huge sunning rock that hung out over the edge of the pond. As the sun lulled her to sleep, she let her thoughts drift and then slipped off into dream land.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
About an hour later
Coming awake suddenly, Lexi shot up and glanced around. Swearing to herself, the pretty blond jumped to her feet and ran to where her clothing was. Slipping back into the running shorts and shoes, she checked her cell phone and was relieved to see that she hadn't missed any calls. Betsy was no doubt expecting her home and she quickly called the woman to let her know she was on her way. When the woman hushed her and told her to take as long as she wanted, she smiled and then hung up. As much as the housekeeper worried over them all, she was a true blessing.
Turning back towards the path, Lexi was at first unaware that she was not alone any longer. Her mind was on her infant son and the family she and her beloved hunter had started.
His bare foot moved unearthly silently over the grass, dressed in a white dress shirt and pants, the lone man closed his eyes and raised his head to bask in the glorious warm sun. But appearances were deceitful for he was more than a man. Raziel, angel of the Lord, once a faithful servant of heaven had turned his back on his orders and suffered from a self imposed exile. He could not bear the fate the archangels had destined to mankind, were them the ones pulling the strings all along? He was an angel with a faith crisis, trying to advert the apocalypse he had unwillingly helped to set in motion.
The rays of the sun had always been one of the greatest gifts of creation, the life giving light that softly warmed everything with its gentle touch was a welcome gift that caused a smile to surge on his lips. Those simple things that most humans overlooked…for the angel it was bliss. He might not fully understand mankind, in fact he knew a mortal woman that was downright maddening, but yet he was willing to die to protect them. No matter the odds or how futile his cause seemed, he wasn’t going to give up.
For a time all he did was bask under the sun while he patiently waited her approach. And finally he could feel that familiar surge of power approaching, however it was tainted with the darkness of the fires of hell. The wicked combination had merged with the blood of her human lineage for several generations and had recently been passed on to a new life.
One of his kind had broken the sacred laws and lived amongst mankind as one of them, had been a master of his own fate. It was something that Raziel dreamed of and at the same time feared. But the guilty for his mislead actions weighed heavily on his shoulders and he needed to find atonement for it. Even if it would be possible, would he be strong enough to commit this final act of defiance and follow his own desires, free at last?
His duty as a heavenly warrior commanded him to strike her and her offspring down for no reason other than her simple existence. Was she even aware of her nature? The notion seemed incredibly foul and abominable for the angel. They were innocents and every last conviction he held onto was that they should be protected.
Even so that his back was turned to the approaching woman and that his eyes were closed he was aware of her presence.
“I have been waiting for you Alexis,” he said in a calm and soft tone, “We must talk.”
The voice broke through her thoughts so abruptly that Lexi reacted automatically. Throwing out a hand, she sent a surge of power in his direction that should have knocked him off his feet. Her expression was frightened and wary as she turned her gaze at the interloper.
"I don't know who you are or what you want but I have no desire to speak with you!" she said, fire in her eyes as she gazed at the angel. "Hasn't anyone told you its rude to sneak up on someone? Especially with such an air of power about you? It could give someone the wrong message."
Conciously aware of her own powers and in full control again, Lexi noted that the creature wasn't at all effect by her earlier reaction and frown. Circling him cautiously, she gaged the distance to the house and knew she would never make it before he caught her.
"Maybe i should be asking... WHAT are you? You are no demon... I don't smell brimestone on you.... so.... "
Still with his back turned to her and his eyes closed, Raziel felt the surge of power that was thrown against him. It was like standing in the middle of a hurricane, but the angel remained on his feet, his expression unchanged by the event. She was powerful, yes. But her power was somewhat diluted through generations. It was the only thing that prevented him from being hurled away violently…he considered her child, the spark of power he had felt on the infant had a potential to be his mother equal, if not even more powerful.
Power and free will, he was always told that it was a dangerous combination. That power had to be led in the right direction, kept under check or the consequences could be disastrous. But then again the ones that taught him that were the same ones that had subverted everything they once preached.
Still not facing her, he took a deep breath and then sighed. “Are you always so polite to those who seek you in peace? I fail to understand your logic, I wasn’t stalking you, I was merely waiting for a convenient moment so we could talk undisturbed. The information I wish to discuss is for your ears alone and no one else.”
Finally opening his eyes as she circled him, he gazed into her eyes, allowing his own eyes to reveal he wished her no harm. “It’s somewhat ironic that you may ask about demons. Can’t you sense my true nature, look deep inside your feelings and you may be able to see the truth.”
Raziel wasn’t aware of how powerful the heritage was in her, but with an answer to that simple comment, he would have an idea of how far of the angels grace was ingrained in her.
“Are you always so polite to those who seek you in peace? I fail to understand your logic, I wasn’t stalking you, I was merely waiting for a convenient moment so we could talk undisturbed. The information I wish to discuss is for your ears alone and no one else.”
Supressing a snort at his words, Lexi continued to circle him only to pull up short and place her hands on her hips as she stared at him. What he was puzzled her as much as it scared the living hell out of her. His hair had barely fluttered when she'd thrown that arch of power at him and most normal people would have been nailed to a tree. Frowning, she stared at him hard as his next words rang out.
“It’s somewhat ironic that you may ask about demons. Can’t you sense my true nature, look deep inside your feelings and you may be able to see the truth.”
As soon as the creature spoke the words, Lexi heard the truth in them. Suddenly, it was as if all blinders had been dropped from her eyes and she was able to see him for what he truly was. No longer did his human persona mask his inner light and for a long moment, the young woman could only stare at him dumbfounded. Then, sinking slowly to the earth to sit on her butt, she shook her head and placed a hand over her face. Long moments passed before she peeked through quickly spread fingers and sighed.
"Just when I though Armageddon was my worst fear... Now I have angels to deal with too??? Good lord...Now I KNOW God has a sense of humor..."she muttered to herself. "Well... Hell.... I guess it only makes sense... If Demons exist... Angels must to.... But... Son of a bitch... WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU ALL BEEN?"
By the time she had gotten to the end of her thoughts, anger had flooded her voice. From her spot on the ground, the pretty blond glared at the angel as she continued.
"With demons running around on earth killing and maiming innocents... Don't you think you all could have made your presence known just a bit sooner? Or don't you believe that innocence is worth saving anymore?"
For a moment the angel just stared at the woman, he could sense the power inside her, that heavenly spark that mingled with the fires of hell. She was a product of opposites, but if her existence was truly a curse or a miracle, he couldn’t know. But it was obvious in her features as he searched them, the very moment when she realized what he was. The spark in her had been strong enough to allow her a faint glimpse underneath the human host he possessed.
Since creation, when the angel revealed his true nature to a mortal, he had witnessed several distinct reactions. From utter devotion to rage, happiness to hate. As she spoke, Raziel prayed silently that he wouldn’t have to deal with another impossible golden haired woman. Even that this woman possessed a great beauty on her own right, somehow she failed to move the angel like the sight of Sage could do.
And then she confronted him about the reason why the angels hadn’t swept out of heaven earlier to strike down the demons. All that the renegade angel could do right then was close his eyes to hide the surge of guilty inside him. It was such a human feeling, but it had a force capable of crushing the angel if he allowed so.
“As a soldier I followed my orders. I have been blind to the truth for a long time…and so has you.”
His eyes snapped open and he stared down at her with a frown in his brow, now it was he that circled the woman, studying her. “Have you never asked yourself where your powers came from? The source of your power? A power no human was ever meant to possess, one that has been passed on in your genes…and from you to your son.”
“Have you never asked yourself where your powers came from? The source of your power? A power no human was ever meant to possess, one that has been passed on in your genes…and from you to your son.”
At his words, Lexi tensed. Her eyes grew sharp and her expression fierce. If the angel made any more against her son then all hell WOULD break loose.
"There isnt a day that goes by that I don't wonder but unfortunately, very little of my history is available for me to learn anything..... and leave my son out of this.... Hes innocent in these heavenly intrigues."
The angels circling made her skin feel like it was to tight for her bones. Power fairly crackled in the air and she still wasnt sure what the creature was about. Turning on her heel so that she was moving in a perfect circle with him, the young mother prayed that Max didn't coming looking for her until this meeting was over.
"Just what is it you are implying anyways? I'm afraid I really don't have a clue as to what you are trying to say...Until 2 years ago.. I didn't even KNOW I had powers. My mother must have been powerful in her own right because she cast a binding spell over them to protect me from a demon who would of used me for his own gain. And why did you decide to show up NOW? Why suddenly have interest in MY powers?"
The angel tilted his head as he stared at the woman with curiosity filled eyes. She was obviously protective of her offspring and Raziel could sense a selfless love behind her defiance. It was that exact moment that made him realize that her human heritage was actually a blessing.
He could sense her confusion as well, she wasn’t fully aware of the true nature of the power in her blood. She didn’t know she had passed the spark on to her baby.
“Your son’s birth is what drew me to you. So far your lineage had success in hiding its origins, but I was close enough to sense the new life. He has a potential for greatness…maybe even greater than yours if that is possible.”
For a moment he stopped in his tracks and his piercing eyes stared right into hers as if staring straight into her soul. “What I don’t fully understand is how the heavenly spark in you has come tainted with the taint of a hellish touch.”
Startled at the words, Lexi hesitated in her motion but then quickly covered her unease. She couldn't let him see her upset. When the angel stopped and leveled a stern gaze at her, she found herself lifting her chin and staring right back at him defiantly.
“What I don’t fully understand is how the heavenly spark in you has come tainted with the taint of a hellish touch.”
"Well, I guess it might have something to do with the fact that my real mother was a practicing witch and it was on a demons bidding that she got pregnant with me.... It seems that my family line has a history with witchcraft, powers and demons. I, myself, have chosen a different path but the curse of the demon is still in my blood."
Crossing her arms over her chest, Lexi moved closer to the angel.
"That same demon tried to persuade me to his side and then tried to kill me when that didn't work. I think its safe to say that he won't come calling anymore....I'm afraid I can be quiet nasty when pushed. I don't take well to manipulation and threats. Call it what you will but sometimes being good and playing nice isn't the answer. Sometimes you have to get your hands a bit dirty in order to do the right thing. Blind obeidance to anyone was never in the cards for me I guess you could say."
Then, as if suddenly realizing somthing, she fell silent and gaped at him.
"Did you just say... HEAVENLY SPARK??" she practically screched at him. "As in.... like... HEAVENLY??"
Raziel stared straight at her eyes as if searching for some great truth that would be revealed if he looked deeply enough. There was something familiar about her, other than being a heavenly descendent, something he couldn’t quite figure out but stroked him as something he should be able to recognize.
Regardless, her defiance was impressive to say the least. When lesser beings would recoil and shiver in fear or maybe drop to their knees in adoration, she stood up, staring him straight in the eyes…the words he had heard before sounded once again in his memory ‘the power of an angel and the free will of a human can only bring disaster, such union can never come to pass’.
“Sometimes you have to get your hands a bit dirty in order to do the right thing. Blind obedience to anyone was never in the cards for me I guess you could say.”
Right there the angel envied her. If he only had such defiance on him in the past, walked on his own shoes, made his own decisions…maybe he would be able to advert the situation he was now facing?
Tilting his head once again at her next words, a frown came to his brow. “You think your powers are a product of bargains with devils?”
Reaching out, he pressed the palm of his hand against her forehead. She might not know, but her genes knew the truth about her heritage. Concentrating on unveiling the truth buried deep in her being, the angel gave her a glimpse of her heavenly heritage. Visions of her lineage danced before her eyes, allowing her insight of the hidden truth behind her powers.
“You think your powers are a product of bargains with devils?”
Frowning, Lexi arched a brow and eyed him.
"Well... that is the only sort of power that anyone could come up with... I mean, that is the sort of power that Sam Winchester had... Everyone.. Myself included... could only assume..."
Tilting her head a bit, the blond gazed at him seriously for a long moment before her eyes widened.
"Are you trying to tell me my powers aren't demon based... but angel based?? How can that be?? That isn't possible.... Surely such a thing doesn't exist." she said in a stunned fashion before turning on her heel again and this time pacing in front of him.
As she moved, the young woman went through everything she knew and then quickly came to the conclusion that if angels existed..... and demons could give humans their powers with blood... Was it so far fetched that angellic child existed? After all most people didn't believe in demons and she know had proof angels existed so who was she to say that she couldn't possibaly possess angel powers?
"How?? Why?? What does this make me?? How does this effect my son?" she asked when she was finally ready to admit the truth in his words.
“You are descendants if the nephilim, the children born of the union of angel and man. The grace of the angel’s run strong in your veins, that is what gives you your powers. There is nothing demonic about them.”
Gazing to the blonde, the angel considered the ramifications of the simple existence of her and her son. In fact he stared at her as if gazing at something impossible as it broke every holy law. He was aware of the fallen, those who had ripped themselves of their grace and became human, but the angel who had conceived the nephilim must have still been connected to its grace.
“You must not allow the origin of your powers to be revealed. Such union is against the laws of heaven. Angels would seek to kill you both while demons might seek to use you for their vile ends.”
Right then the angel stared at her and compassion could be seen in his deep eyes. The idea of killing her for her heritage was something abominable. His exile was a self imposed one, and even that the heavenly warrior believed that delivering her and her son to the archangel Zachariah might allow him to be welcomed back in heaven, Raziel wasn’t going to betray everything he always had fought for. He had been blind long enough, and now it was his own conscience that guided his actions.
“You are descendants if the nephilim, the children born of the union of angel and man. The grace of the angel’s run strong in your veins, that is what gives you your powers. There is nothing demonic about them.”
Staring at him in silence, Lexi tried to take it all in. It seemed so unbelievable that she knew it was true. Confusion marred her brow as she wondered how on earth it had happened. It made sense though.
“You must not allow the origin of your powers to be revealed. Such union is against the laws of heaven. Angels would seek to kill you both while demons might seek to use you for their vile ends.”
At those words, fear struck her heart. Her concern was immediately for her infant son and her small family.
"So your telling that I will not only have to battle the forces of hell but those of heaven too?? What kind of God would put those type of orders out? My birth is not not my fault nor is it that of my son. If those are truly God's rules then he's no god I wish to recognize. I think somewhere in heaven someone got their wires crossed."
Having heard all that she could take for the moment, Lexi started shaking her head and backing away. Her expression was bleak and dispairing.
"I need time to think on this all...... If what you say is true then I need to figure out a plan. I will not allow my family or my child to be hurt and I will kill anything that tries. Its not my way to back from a fight and if one comes to my door... Well, they better be prepared to meet their maker. My family is everything to me... Far above my own life."
Hearing her speak of God, the angel’s instinctive reaction was to try to defend the Almighty Creator, but he lacked the strength. He hoped with all his might that the ones pulling the strings were acting alone, but what if she was right? What if the orders that had eluded him all those times came from God himself? Since the creation Raziel believed with a blind devotion and now as he had was doubts.
Stepping back when she said she needed time to reflect, the angel nodded in agreement. She was powerful but not even her powers could stand against the might of Zachariah and those faithful to him. The archangel kept the others on a tight leash, close to them.
Rebelling against his orders was something incredibly difficult for Raziel to do, but deep down he knew it was the only choice he had. At that moment he had a choice and for the first time he followed his own conscience.
“I will be watching you,” he said before vanishing in thin air.
