(This is a joint post with Lexi, Jo, Curse, Max, Bobby and Ben)
The evening air was cool for once as a breeze drifted in off the water of the pond. Smiling a bit, Lexi Blair sat back in her chair and gave her tummy a soft rub. The baby moved restlessly under her hand and she felt a strong kick against her palm. These days Junior had been quieter and not as active but when he was... he definitely made his presence known. Looking across the table at Jo, the young woman smiled and said.
"Thank you so much for having us over, Jo... I was about going stir crazy in the house and Max has been chomping at the bit after his bike accident."
Glancing over at where the men and Ben were gathered looking at some new weapon book, she shook her head before continuing.
"He’s been restless lately. I think that is what the race was all about. I'm hoping that this information I’m gathering might actually turn out to be a hunt here in the area."
At a slight twinge in her back, she frowned before seeing the men glance towards them and elbow each other. Curse seemed to be up to something.
"I think your husband is about to get mine into trouble" she said with a grin as she glanced at her friend.
Sure enough, the tall sandy haired man turned on his heel and headed towards them.
The evening had flowed rather well, if Curse did say so himself. Both of the wives looked radiant in their pregnant bodies and Curse was actually having fun with young Ben too. The kid reminded him of himself with all the mischief he had in that little brain of his.
Standing with Max and Bobby, the hunter suddenly had a grand idea and got their approval before heading over to his wife to tell her his idea. As he approached, Lexi arched a brow but he ignored her.
"Darlin... Max, Bobby and I are going to go out and get a surprise for you girls and Ben. Do you think you'll be Ok here for a moment?"
Jo smile back at Lexi as the two women talked.
"You're welcome. I know the feeling. Even with the bar and everything... Even though he says he's good here at home Curse is a little restless too."
Jo nodded her head as Lexi mentioned the research that she had dug up. She had already seen it and they both agreed that it could mean something was going on in the area.
Sighing a little as Lexi motioned to the men and said something about Curse, Max and trouble. That brought a chuckle out of Jo.
"Yeah, you're probably right about that I told you. He's itching to do something."
Jo sat back in her chair as she watched her husband approach. Looking at him a little warily.
"Oh, really? A surprise for us? ... I don't know what you've got up your sleeve but yes. We will be fine. We are grown women you know." Jo shook her head. Having no idea what kind of surprise the men could have in store for them.
She looked over at Max and gave him a questioning look... "Max... You go out that door with my husband and it's of your own free will. Don't you two go getting into trouble and start blaming it on the other? “Jo chuckled again and smiled.
Max wasn't actually looking forward to tag along and the quest Curse had proposed him, but yeah, the man was right that it would be a nice surprise for Ben and the pregnant ladies. Plus Curse had more of that childish anticipation for it in his eyes than he believed Ben would.
He let him tell their wives that they were going out, and just as he expected he saw Lexi raise a brow at them.
A smirk trailed his features as Jo spoke. It wasn't surprising that she would believe they were up to some mischief.
"Now Jo, we are grown man, why would you think we would do something like that? Besides...if we do get in trouble...it's all Curses’ fault."
Laughing, he gave a wink to his wife. Maybe Curse had a good idea after all.
"Ladies, I babysat both of you and you're still around to tell the tale. I think I can take care of your husband’s too. “Bobby said with a grin of remembrance.
To the two men he said, "Come on let's get out of here while the getting’s good." seeing both woman still not convinced.
Ben had loved spending the afternoon away from the house. It was just what he had needed. School was out, most of his friends were out of town, and as of late, his obsession with research had started to bore him.
He had been standing with the guys, smiling and hanging on their every word, when Curse had told Max and Bobby something. He had raised a brow, wanting to know what was up, but had opted out of asking, so instead, he just watched the three of them periodically talk to Lexi and Jo. He was desperately curious at what this "surprise" was, but, decided to just wait and see.
So, instead, he walked over to where everyone was, and put on his best puppy dog pout, hoping it would work.
"Max, can I come with you?"
Looking to Ben, Max couldn't help but smirk at the puppy dog look on the boy's face and it indeed made him feel tempted to take the kid along, but it would spoil the surprise.
"Sorry Ben, but we need a big strong guy to stand back and protect the ladies for us. Can I count on you, buddy?" he asked the boy, trying to sound as convincing about it as possible. Ben might not be happy with it now, but he would likely be so later.
Ruffling Ben's hair, he gave the boy a smile. They shouldn't take long after all.
Smiling at her husband, Lexi reached out and took Ben's hand.
"Yeah... we might need a man around to protect us. After all, two pregnant women... You never know when something may spring out of nowhere and we need protection."
Giving Ben a wink, Lexi pushed to her feet and then made shooing motions with her hand.
"All right... off with you men.... Go find some mischief. Jo, Ben and I are going to go for a walk by the pond."
That said, the blond stood on her tiptoes to kiss her husband and then gave him a pushed towards the door. From the corner of her eye, she saw Jo do the same and then they were all waving goodbye before they were out the door. Glancing down at Ben's disappointed face, she put an arm around his shoulders and said.
"Look at it this way...... You have the WHOLE plate of cookies to yourself now!"
Grinning wickedly, Curse leaned down and kissed his wife before telling her they would be back shortly. Squeezing her hand, he moved after Max and Bobby and waved goodbye as he went through the garage door to his truck.
Jo closed her eyes and shook her head as the men were about to set off on their secret mission. The thought going through her mind was that it was her husband's bright idea so she hoped things didn't go awry too badly.
When she opened her eyes she saw her husband with a wicked grin on his face. He bent down held her hand and kissed her quickly. Telling her that they would be back soon and then he was on his way out the door.
Jo watched as Max and Bobby followed Curse out through the garage. She collapsed back in her chair and looked over at Lexi. A smirk on her lips.
"Now, what the hell do you think they are up to?"
Sighing Lexi stared after them for a moment before shaking her head.
"NO idea.... but whatever it is... it can't be good!"
Laughing a bit then, she continued.
"How about that walk down to the pond? My back is hurting and I could use the exercise."
After giving them each a look, the young woman stepped off the patio and into the cool grass.
Ben was definitely pissed at not getting to go. When Max had ruffled his hair, he had quickly jerked his head away. He was feeling left out, plus, what nine year old little boy would rather have to stay back with the wives than go and have fun with the guys? NONE.
So, when Lexi told him how they needed him there, he just rolled his eyes, lightly pulling his hand away and just standing there. When she mentioned cookies, though, he couldn't help but smile, though he tried his best not to.
Turning and watching the men leave, he pouted lightly, but said nothing. He was hurt he wasn't getting to go, but he was sure he would be able to guilt Max into doing something to make up for it later, and he would OFCOURSE just get to pay Curse back with an extra painful prank.
Turning back to Lexi and Jo, he watched them talk, and then just shrugged when Lexi mentioned a walk to the pond,
'Better than sitting around...' he thought to himself.
With an overly dramatic sigh, he followed Lexi off the porch, his little biker boots hitting the ground with a thud as he jumped up then landed back in the grass.

Jo sighed and moved off after Lexi and Ben.... Hurrying up a bit to catch up with Lexi.... Falling into step with her and walking by her side. So.... How are you doing? Ready for that baby to make an appearance? *gives a little chuckle*
"At least you know.... You're gonna be through this before the real heat of summer hits us... That's pretty lucky.... Not so much for me"
Nodding Lexi had to smile before glancing over at Ben. His expression was comical but she hid her smile as she replied.
"I'm not sure who is more anxious. Me, Max or Ben here.... I swear, I think he’s got a list of things he thinks he’s going to need to teach him and I'm already terrified of the trouble they will cause together!"
Reaching out, the pretty blond ruffled the young boy’s hair and gave him a wink.
"I'm sure I'll be gray haired before I'm thirty with the crew I have!"
Ben was still mad. He felt betrayed by the guys, Max especially. He was a guy, he was cool, and shouldn’t he have gotten to go? He thought so, he was sure he should have. He should be out having fun with the guys, not out here walking around with two pregnant women. Where was the fun in that?
Staring at the ground as he angrily walked, Ben slightly glanced over at Lexi as he heard her speak. He fought the smile that was threatening to appear when she mentioned the baby and all Ben was going to teach him, and the trouble they were going to get into. She was right. That had been all he had thought about lately was how cool it would be to have another kid around, especially one that Ben could teach and help to grow up and be cool like him. The thought of being a "big brother" for some reason was just awesome to him.
Looking up at Lexi, he frowned lightly when she ruffled his hair, and only shrugged at the little gray-haired comment. He would usually have laughed, but he was in a mood right now, one that the old him would have probably used to get WHATEVER he wanted back when he lived with his mom, but for now, he just needed to act angry.
"Maybe when the baby comes, I'll actually have another guy to hang out with..."
Frowning, he leaned down and picked up a stick, swinging it around in front of him as he made his way ahead of Lexi and Jo.
Jo chuckled at the interaction between Lexi and Ben. Ben seemed to fit in perfectly. It was going to be nice for Lexi to have Ben around she thought. She knew Ben was upset, but it was harder for her. She didn't feel like she knew him that well. Not like Lexi did. She wasn't used to being around kids. Ha! She thought to herself... All that was going to change soon.
What with Lexi's baby arriving very soon and then after the new she and Curse had just gotten that day. In a few months it was going to be crazy with kids around this place.
Jo tried to give Ben a little smile then turned to Lexi again.
"Oh, you know... I had a doctor's appointment today. Curse ACTUALLY went with me. Can you believe it? We found out something kind of interesting." Jo left it hanging there. Wanting to keep Lexi in a little suspense.
Sighing a bit at Ben's look, Lexi was silent for a moment as she listened to Jo.
"Really?? What was that?" she asked as she wandered down the path. "Did you find out if it was a boy or girl?"
since the evening was so cool, the young mother to be was enjoying the little jaunt. She actually felt a bit better since she was up and moving around now
There at the house for awhile, she had been in a bit of pain. Now, however, it seemed to have passed.
"Ben.... Why don't you run ahead and see if you can find any interesting trails of animals?" she said
Ben turned back to Lexi. Part of him wanted to say something mean, but, the other part of him thought it sounded like a cool idea. So, he decided to just tone down the mean part and combine it with the second part.
"Fine..." he said, turning and running up ahead.
He stopped a little ahead of them, looking around. He wasn't really sure if he'd find something, but it would give him a chance to do a little exploring, plus, he had fun looking for trails and stuff. It was just something he enjoyed, and now he knew that one day, if he became a hunter, it might even help him.
Smiling, he ran around, looking around on the ground. He found little prints here and there, not much though. Looking at the little ones he had just found, he thought about what they could be from, and then he smiled.
"Raccoon..." he said quietly, grinning.
Then, he kept moving, following along the trail the raccoons prints seemed to be going, and then he froze, his eyes getting big.
"LEXI!!!!!!!!!"
He screamed her name, not really meaning to, but not knowing what else to do. There, not three feet in front of him, where a new kind of prints. They looked almost human, only one major difference showing: instead of normal toe-prints, there was what seemed to be claws. Looking around, his heart was beating inside his chest like a drum.
Jo grinned at Lexi.
"No, we don't know if it's a boy or a girl. But technically.... I guess it could be one of each. We're having twins."Jo paused for a minute to let that news sink in. Smiling again at her friend as they walked. "And don't you dare tell him I told you, but ..... Curse passed out cold. Poor guy. But, you know what. He was really happy. When he saw the babies on the ultrasound. He had tears in his eyes."
Jo sighed remembering the event from earlier in the day. It had been a day full of mixed emotions. Suddenly as they were casually walking along. Jo and Lexi chatting away... Jo heard Ben scream out Lexi's name, and he sounded scared. Jo stopped in her tracks and looked over at Lexi before reacting.
Blinking rapidly at Jo's startling news, Lexi could only grin and give her friend a hug. She couldn't be happier for the other woman but she was still thinking on how she could use this all as leverage against her handsome husband. She and Curse still loved to pick on each other and the fact he passed out cold... Well, she'd give him a bit of time to get over it and then swat him with it.
As they started back down the path talking, Lexi was about to tell Jo the names she and Max had finally settled on when Ben's panicked voice sounded out. Instantly on alert, Lexi hurried towards the sound as fast as her pregnant feet could move and was surprised to find him looking around the woods in horror.
"What is it, Ben? What’s wrong? What did you see?" she called out before glancing at Jo and hurrying to where he stood.
"Footprints!" he yelled, pointing down frantically. "Weird ones!"
He felt like a wuss for being scared, but he had learned that if it was weird or scary, that meant it was probably dangerous. Looking back around the woods, he tried his best to look everywhere, scared that whatever it was, it was still around.
"Lexi..." he whispered, scooting closer to her. He didn't know why he was worried; he just had this weird feeling. That feeling you got when you weren't alone, or when someone/something was watching you.
Jo moved quickly... staying with Lexi as they headed toward Ben. Wondering what had him so spooked. The conversation that had just occurred was forgotten. They got to where Ben was standing. Lexi questioned the boy and he told them something about weird foot prints. Jo wrinkled her brow... She heard Ben say Lexi's name and moved next to her. Jo moved to where Ben had pointed and bent down to look.
He was right. It was definitely a foot print and it was weird. Almost human looking but instead of toes it looked like claws. Jo felt the earth where the foot print was.... then she got up and moved forward a little. She found another one. Then another one... She followed them along for a little ways and ended up near a tree.
Looking around the ground she saw a lot of prints around the tree. It looked like whatever it was had been hanging around this tree... Maybe hiding behind it. Jo turned around to see what could be seen from that vantage point and it was a straight on shot to the patio of her house.
"Oh crap." she mumbled.
She moved quickly back to where Lexi and Ben were....
"Lexi.... the tracks go back to that tree over there. Looks like whatever it was might have been hiding there. Looking over at the house." Jo pointed back in the direction from where they had just walked. A worried look on her face.
Lexi could see the tracks but there was no way in hell she was getting down to look at them. In her condition, she would be easy prey for anything lurking about. From what she could tell the tracks were human like but the claw marks were distinctly animalistic.
The conclusions she was rapidly coming too were NOT good unless it was some sort of trick the guys were playing on them. However, Lexi highly doubted the men would joke about something like THIS at this point in their lives. Both wives were pregnant and they were more apt to be overly protective than scary like this.
Her fears were heightened when she saw the look on Jo's face as she returned.
"Son of a bitch..." she hissed before realizing Ben was listening to everything they said.
Giving him what she hoped was a reassuring look; she patted his shoulder and turned him around on the path. Another looked passed between the older women and Lexi said.
"You know.... I think maybe this walk is doing more harm than good. Why don't we walk back to the house and get a cool glass of lemonade or something? "
Taking a few steps back towards the house, Lexi moved in an unhurried pace but never let her attention off the woods around them. She suddenly felt as if eyes were staring into her back but she wanted to keep everything as calm as possible. With any luck, they could make it back to the house and to safety before whatever it was figured out they were on to it.
Ben wasn't sure what was going on. He watched the look Lexi was giving the prints, and he felt his heart start thumping again. He knew he was right, this was something bad, especially when Jo followed the prints. The look she had when she came back TOLD HIM that something bad had been there, and that he had found its prints.
Listening to what Jo said, Ben's eyes got big and his breath a little rapid. Something had been there, something had been WATCHING them. Then, he heard Lexi curse, and quickly jerked his head around. Lexi looked at him, patted him on the shoulder, but it didn't do any good. Neither did her little lemonade statement. It was too late to lie to him. He KNEW something was around, and he knew it was bad.
Looking around the woods, Ben quickly caught up to Lexi, wrapping his little hand in hers as they walked, his eyes darting back and forth to look around the woods. The sun was long set now, the full moon shining brightly, so he could still see, but the woods were getting creepier and creepier as he thought about what might be out there, watching them, or worse, hunting them.
"Lexi... What is it...? What made those?" Ben asked her quietly. He felt as if something was there, watching them, following them. He didn't like the feeling, not at all.
Jo just nodded at Lexi's suggestion to head back to the house for "lemonade"... She fell into line on the other side of Ben. Keeping the boy between her and Lexi as they walked.
She could see and feel that Ben was scared. Jo tried to make sure they kept close together. They had to keep their pace fairly slow as Lexi couldn't move too quickly. They also didn't want to bring any undue attention upon themselves. The creepy feeling that something was watching them sent a shiver down her spine. She spoke quietly, hoping only Lexi could hear.
"Lexi... This is not good. I'm not sure what made those tracks but I've got an idea... They were fresh too." Jo looked down at Ben then. "Really Ben, don't worry. Whatever it is, it was probably just curious. It probably ran off into woods afraid of us as we came around."
They continued walking back to the house... Darkness had fallen now. Jo thought about calling Curse but then realized her phone was in the house.
"Damn it." She muttered.
There was a very real fear in Jo's voice as she spoke and Lexi knew they were in big trouble. Her "Spidey" senses were going nuts suddenly and she could practically feel the air growing thicker with menace.
The pregnancy had made her powers unreliable but not completely without merit. Hoping that she would have the strength to wield them if necessary, she speed up and pulled her two companions along with her. As soon as they broke free of the tree line, she glanced down at Ben and spoke in a very low tone.
"Ben..... As soon as I say go... I want you to run as fast as you can towards the house. DO NOT STOP FOR ANYTHING, do you hear me? Jo and I will be right behind you but we need you to get to safety and call Max and Curse on the cell phones, all right? If what I suspect is lurking out there... We are going to need help and you've got the fastest feet right now."
Glancing at Jo to see if she agreed, the young witch was about to continue when the sudden snapping of a twig behind them in the woods rang out like a gunshot. Gulping, Lexi gave Ben a hard push and said.
"RUN!!! RUN NOW BEN!" before whirling around to fix on whatever was coming after them
The sight that greeted her eyes was to horrifying to imagine. Grizzly teeth glistened in the moon light and drool slobbered down huge, gapping jaws. Fierce yellow eyes glinted out of the half shadows and when it stepped out into the open, it stood almost 6 foot tall. A long, horrifying snarl rang out and then it was moving towards the women in a pace so quick that Lexi almost didn't have time to collect enough power to strike at it.
With what magic she could gather, she struck out at the creature and was satisfied to see it fly back through the air and land hard against the thickest tree. Stunned for a moment, it didn't move. Spinning on her heels, the witch grabbed JO's hand and yelled.
"RUN!!!!"
Ben walked with the women on both side of him, his jaw clenched tight as they made their way back to the house. He was scared, and wasn't afraid to admit it, to himself at least.
Ben felt his heart skip a beat when Jo whispered to Lexi. He couldn't hear everything she said, but he heard enough. Then, she spoke to him, but after she was done, he just looked up at her with a look that practically screamed ARE YOU SERIOUS?
He was quickly jerked forward by Lexi, though, and he was instantly scared again. They finally were free of the trees, but as soon as Ben began to calm down, Lexi looked down at him, and as she spoke, he felt himself stop breathing.
"Run?"
He wasn’t sure he had heard her right. She wanted him to RUN? Then, she said to call Max and Curse, and he knew that whatever had made those prints was a monster, and it was still around. He was nine, not stupid.
He opened his mouth to speak again, to ask her what was wrong, to try to HELP if something was after them, but as soon as the first sound came, the sound of a stick snapping was heard, but as he turned to see what it was, he heard Lexi scream for him to run, and taking a deep breath, he took off towards the house, running as fast as he could.
As he ran, he heard a weird noise, and as natural curiosity peaked, he turned to see someone, or something, go flying back against a tree, and away from Lexi and Jo. His eyes getting huge, he quickly turned and started running, his natural attitude coming back with the fear. "Son of a bitch...
Running quickly, he soon made it back to the house, bursting through the door and running straight to the phone. Jerking it up, he dialed Max's number, tapping his foot anxiously as it rang. Then, he heard something. Raising his head up, his stomach felt like it had hit his feet as he dropped the phone and ran to where the sound was coming from. Lifting it up, he started shaking. There, in his hands, was Max's phone. He had left it at the house.
"Oh no...."
Jo didn't realize she had been holding her breath until Lexi yelled for Ben to run.... Then she let the breath out with a 'whooshing' sound. She turned when Lexi turned and spotted the thing at the same time.
"Oh shit...." she gasped out.
Then suddenly she could feel the power in the air around her. She knew what Lexi was doing. Jo watched for a moment then turned to look over her shoulder. Making sure that Ben was ok. He had made it to the house. Thank God. When he got through the sliding glass door she turned back around just in time to see the creature go flying backward from the force of power Lexi had sent at it.
The next thing she knew she and Lexi were hand in hand and they were running. Jo was not about to leave Lexi behind so she matched pace with her. All she could think of was that Ben had gotten a hold of Max or Curse or Bobby and getting their asses into the house so she could get to the closest weapons stash in the house.
Curse had weapons stashed everywhere... The closest being was in the den downstairs.... As her mind was thinking ahead they finally arrived at the house.... running through the door Ben had left open as soon as they both cleared it Jo slid the huge plate glass door shut and locked it. Then she turned to Lexi to make sure she was Ok.
"Let's get you sitting down on the couch. You are in no condition for that run."
Then she turned to Ben.... "Ben, did you get a hold of Max? Or Bobby? Or Curse?"
Running was hard when you were nine months pregnant, Lexi decided as they flew across the lawn and up the patio stairs to the house. Jo was valiantly trying to keep pace but they were both scared as hell.
This sort of thing just wasn’t supposed to be happening right now and Lexi knew the creature would recover in just moment. She could practically feel its evil rage and it was making her physically ill. Bursting through the open door, the witch staggered against the table as Jo threw the glass shut and bolted it. As the other woman turned to give her instructions and talk to Ben, Lexi felt her heart hit her throat as she caught sight of the creature running full speed towards the house.
"NO TIME FOR THAT FOLKS!!!!!! WE"RE GOING TO HAVE COMPANY!!" she screamed out before charging over to where Ben stood and grabbing him by the hand. "JO!! IS there a room in this place with solid oak doors?? And maybe very few windows?? WE NEED TO GET THERE NOW!!!"
That said, the blond began to pull Ben along behind her, not realizing he was holding her husband’s phone.
Ben just stood there, quietly whispering the same phrase over and over. It was one that just came naturally to him when he was angry, and one that he VERY often got in trouble for, just like he had for a long time, since he was younger.
"Son of a bitch... Son of a..."
Hearing someone come running in, Ben quickly jerked around, almost screaming until he saw Lexi and Jo come in, Lexi leaning against the table as Jo shut the door and locked it.
He stared at them as Jo tried to help Lexi, then, when she jerked around and asked him if he'd called anyone; he just stood there, looking down at Max's cell, then back at her. "I... I uh... It's...." He was stuttering, both out of fear and how totally pissed he was at his luck.
Then, just as he thought he could finally tell her, Lexi screamed at them, and in a flash was beside him, gripping his hand. Hearing her ask about the room, he quickly jerked his head around, looking at Jo, but before he knew it, he had been jerked again by Lexi, and was being pulled along behind her.
It took him a second for everything to process, but when it did, he quickly looked down, then, remembering the phone, knew he had to say something. "Lexi... Lexi! LEXI!!"
Jo was trying to get Lexi somewhere to sit down and rest when Lexi yelled out. Jo looked up and saw what she was yelling about. When Lexi asked about a room she nodded her head.
Watching as Lexi grabbed up Ben's hand... She could see Ben was stuttering and and trying to say something... Then her heart fell as she saw something in his hand. It was a phone. It was Max's phone. 'Oh Crap' she thought. That meant that Ben hadn't been able to get through to Max and now that she thought about it. Ben probably didn't even KNOW Curse's cell number so he probably hadn't been able to get through to the men.
"OK... Yes... We need to get to the Den... that's the best place.... Come on!" Jo lead the way... Running toward the den. When she got to the door she turned the handle on the heavy old fashioned oak door and pushed it open. She held the door open and waited for the other two to pass through before she slamed the door closed and locked it.
There was an old fashioned arm chair near the door and Jo figured it couldn't hurt so she pushed it in front of the door as a barricade. Then she looked around at Ben and Lexi.
Following after Jo, Lexi barely heard Ben's words but when they finally did set in, she wanted to cry. Ben looked upset and she hugged him close before nodding at Jo. However, at her suggestion of the desk, she immediately shook her head.
"No.. The desk would be better served as a barrier in front of that door. Help me move it..." She said and ran to push at the thing. Between the two fo them they managed to slid the heavy piece of furniture in place just as the sound of shattering glass rang out through the house.
Looking at Jo in a sick manner, Lexi tried to joke.
"Well, at least just consider this the beginning of your remodeling...."
Then, the sound of low growls and snarls grew nearer and nearer until the occupants of the office knew they were right outside the door. Hushing Ben, Lexi looked at Jo and the girls couldn't do a thing but stare as the door rattled once and then twice.
"Ben... give me the phone!" Lexi whispered.
As he handed it to her, the blond quickly dialed Bobby's number but felt panic set in further as it went directly to voicemail.
"POPS!! ITS LEXI!! WE ARE BEING ATTACKED AT JO's HOUSE AND LOCKED IN THE DEN!!! WE NEED HELP!!" she said as low as she could as the office den banged.
Then, hanging up that number, she dialed Curses and got the same response. Another message was left and just as she hung that call up, a fierce pain gripped her abdomen. Keeping her face averted so the others wouldn't catch on, the young witch glanced around the den.
"I hope to hell you have weapons in here, Jo... cause it looks liek we are on our own!"

Ben was freaking out. He had the phone, so Max wasn't going to be coming back to help any time soon. That thing, whatever it was, was coming after them, and they had no way to defend themselves right now. What else was he supposed to do?
As he was drug along to the den, as Jo had suggested, he just gripped the phone even tighter. As they ran through the door, Jo slammed it shut, causing Ben to jump lightly. He was shaking, terrified. Here he was, a nine year old kid, with two pregnant women, trying to hide from a monster.
'So much for me getting to have a normal life, Max...' he thought, scowling. Turning to Lexi, he frantically held out the phone. "Lexi! What are we going to do?! Max left his phone; I don't know Curse or Bobby's number. What do I do?!"
Lexi pulled him into a hug, but that didn't help but for a second. As soon as she and Jo were pushing furniture in front of the door, he realized what that hug had meant. They were screwed. Turning to face the door, Ben gasped loudly as he heard the loud noise of glass shattering and loud footsteps, which meant only one thing.
"It's inside.... Lexi... Jo... It's inside..." His voice was loud, scared, and shaky. He wasn't sure WHAT they were gonna do. Then, he heard the growling and snarling as it tried to get in the door. "It's here..."
Looking at Lexi, he quit talking entirely at the look she gave him, then, as he heard it start trying to get in again, Lexi asked for the phone, and he was quick to comply. He listened to her call Bobby, then Curse, and his heart sank when she turned to them. It was official; no one was coming to help them.
"What are we gonna do? What can we do? What is it? Why is it here?" he whispered all the questions so quick it sounded like one big run-on sentence. He was scared to death, and from what he could tell, probably about to get eaten by a monster. Quickly looking at the two women, he felt his heart beat faster and faster as the creature began to beat on the door.
Jo sighed and knew that Lexi wasn't able to get through to any of the guys on the phone. What the hell was going on with that? Curse wouldn't have turned off his phone... not after today for sure. Finding out about the twins, he was even more over protective than usual.
Jo was still looking down at the chest when Lexi mentioned something about weapons. She just nodded. The trunk was locked though. Key, where was the key. Then she remembered and looked toward the door that was being shaken by the creature. The friggin' key was in the desk that was now blocking the door. 'Crap' Jo thought. "I have to get the key."
Taking a deep breath Jo moved toward the desk trying not to freak out whenever the door shook and she heard the growling coming from the other side. Quickly she got there pulled open the top door and grabbed the keys laying there. Then she ran back across the room to the chest and fumbling with the keys a little bit she unlocked the chest.
Pushing the lid up and propping it open.Jo started to dig through the chest pulling out weapons. Shot gun... Silver knives... Other various items. She was looking for something though. Finally she found it. A large box of silver bullets (seriously... Curse would have them) and the two matching black berretta 9mm handguns that the ammo was for.
Lexi had no answers for her young charge as he fired them off. She was as taken off guard as the other two were and at the moment, she was having trouble even breathing through the intense crap in her lower back. Working to keep her expression composed, she glanced at Jo and watched as she ran to the desk and started going through a drawer.
The den door rattled ominously before it suddenly fell silent and Jo rushed to unlock the weapons cabinet. There were some mightily interesting thoughts running through the young witchs mind as she contemplated what all she would be saying to her husband if they all made it out of this alive! Not the least would be the fact that he conveniently left his phone behind on a night out with the guys!
Swearing under her breath, Lexi moved to Jo's side and took one of the guns. After making sure it was locked, she turned to stare at the door and listened for sounds of movement on the other side. When nothing came, she sighed and looked at Jo and Ben.
Ben just stood and watched as everything happened. He eyed Jo as Lexi asked about weapons, and then he saw her look at a chest. 'Awesome...' he thought. If there were weapons, then they would be okay, wouldn't they?
Then, he heard her say something about the key. There was a key.
"Where is the key?" he asked, looking around. He didn't get an answer, but she did go over to the dresser, the one currently blocking the door, and every time he heard the door rattle or the creature growl or snarl, he cringed. He kept expecting it burst through the door at Jo, but it didn't. Just tried to open the door. When she turned and ran to the chest, he knew she had the key, and smiled, for the first time, totally relieved. 'Epic...'
Then, as Lexi and Jo looked through the weapons chest, the noises of the rattling door, and of the noises of the hungry creature, fell silent. Lexi was soon close to him, staring at the door, and Ben grinned when it remained quiet.
"I think it's gone..." he said, turning to Lexi. "What do you think? Do you think it's safe?"
Jo took one of the hand guns as Lexi took the other. Making sure the magazine was fully loaded she jammed it in, turned off the safety and chambered a round. She let the gun dangle at her side as she stood back up. Moving to stand next to Lexi and Ben. Still staring at the door.
Jo took in a deep breath trying to stay calm. She could handle this. She was a hunter. It wasn't like she hadn't faced things like this before. But, it had never happened in her HOME, she had never been happily married and pregnant before. She had one of her closest friends with her who was 9 months pregnant and a nine year old boy there too. This was different than her out hunting on her own or with a partner.
This THING was attacking her and her friends in her HOME. Suddenly the thought started to piss her off. "God damn it!!!”.... She yelled out and then stopped and looked down at Ben. "Sorry about that. You know what. We're going to be FINE Ben. You know why? Because WE are hunters. We are NOT helpless women and children. We are going to kick this son of a bitch's ASS."
Just about the time Jo got that out the door went quiet.
She turned to look at the door again. Then she looked back and forth between Lexi and Ben. When she heard Ben ask if they thought it was safe, all she could do was shrug.
With each passing moment, Lexi was growing increasingly uneasy. A sudden, savage pain had her slumping into a chair and she felt something warm and wet drench the shorts of the little summer outfit she was wearing. Gulping a bit, she looked down, blanched and then looked at the others with an abashed expression on her pretty face.
Ben’s words registered in her mind as he asked if they were safe but Lexi could only shrug haplessly.
"Ummmmm.... HOUSTON.... WE HAVE A PROBLEM!" she declared wobbly. When both sets of eyes turned to her, she stood up and Jo could immediately see what was going on. "MY WATER JUST BROKE!! I'm in LABOR! If that were won't let us out that way... We are just going to have to find another way."
The shock on her companions faces would have made her laugh it the situation wasn't so dire. She should have realized all those cramps and pains earlier where a sign of on setting labor but she hadn’t really thought about it since she was suppose to have a few more weeks.
"Can we get out the window, JO? Max's Hummer is parked in the driveway. If we can make it to that, we might be able to get out of this alive."
Waddling carefully to the glass, she peeked out but nothing moved in the darkness that she could see. Another rattle from the den door had her gasping as she waved Ben and Jo over.
"While he’s in here... We might have a chance. We're going to have to take it....."
Ben just stood there with the adults, trying to stay calm. The creature was silent, but to him, after what just happened, the silence was just as terrifying as the sound of it growling. Looking occasionally between Lexi and Jo, he eventually just sighed, speaking quietly. "Maybe it's gone..."
Just seconds after he said that, Jo screamed out, causing Ben to gasp and jump, looking at her with fear. Then, as she spoke, he couldn't help but smile, especially when she put so much emphasis on WE when she was talking about hunters. She had called him a hunter. That was the ultimate confidence boost for him. No one had ever ACTUALLY called him a hunter, except for himself, so that right there changed his entire attitude. He knew they'd be fine. They weren't two pregnant women and a kid, they were hunters. They could handle this thing, whatever it was.
Turning to face the door with a confident smile, all his hopes were shattered when he heard Lexi's voice, declaring yet ANOTHER problem.
Jerking his head around, he looked her over, seeing her soaked in something. "Um... Lexi... Why are you so wet?"
When she screamed out that her water had broke, that she was in labor, Ben's heart stopped. His eyes felt like they were gonna pop out of his head as he just stared at her.
'She's in... Oh no... The baby's coming...' Ben knew enough to know that they were ROYALLY SCREWED as of now. First a monster, NOW a baby? What could they do?
Then, he heard the last part of what she was saying. 'If that were won't let us out...' A were? She couldn't mean what he was thinking could she? There was a WEREWOLF trying to break in through the door, to EAT THEM, and now she was in labor and the baby was coming?! Jerking around, he looked at Lexi, the look on his face saying one thing and one thing only: WHAT THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO DO?!?!
When he heard her say something about the Hummer, he looked over at Jo, hoping beyond hope that they could get out. That they could get away, get Lexi to the hospital, then let Max kill the werewolf after they'd had the baby. Watching Lexi move to the door, he hoped they could get her out of it, and get her to the vehicle, but as the door began to rattle once again, he knew their time was running out.
"Oh crap... its back....."
Backing against the wall, he stood there, listening to the creature growl and snarl and beat on the door, trying to claw and beat its way in. He didn't mean to say it, and he wasn't even sure why he had been thinking it, but with all that was happening, and with a werewolf about to burst in and kill them, only one phrase came to mind.
"I wish Dean was here...."
Any thoughts about them being safe when out the window when Jo heard Lexi's shaky voice. When Jo turned to look she saw what Lexi had just announced, that her water had broken. "OH SHIT" Jo said stunned. What the hell else could happen now? She heard Lexi talking about going out the window and watched as Lexi made her way over to look outside.
Jo sighed heavily again. Thinking, that would be an awesome idea if Lexi wasn't 9 MONTH PREGNANT. But then the den door rattled again and her heart sunk. Jo looked over at Ben and the elation he had on his face from her earlier bravado about them being hunters fell away when he realized what was happening with Lexi as well.
Jo looked over at Lexi.
"You're right. I think it's our only chance right now. We have to get you out of here and to a hospital."
Taking a minute to get herself together from this new situation she sucked it up and put a determined look on her face. She moved over to where she had set some of the weapons out on the ground and grabbed a rather large silver knife that had a sheath she could strap to her back. They still had the guns, but this was a 'just in case' safety measure. Jo was somewhat of a knife person so she felt more secure having it with her.
"Alright.... Out the window it is." Jo moved quickly over to the window where Lexi was standing.... Pulling the latch and sliding the window open. Then seeing an opportunity to vent some frustration, instead of carefully taking the screen out she full on punched it with her fist as hard as she could. Then let it fall to the ground outside.
"Come on Ben. You're going to have to help me get Lexi out the window."
Jo turned to look at Ben just as she heard him say.... "I wish Dean was here...." and she raised her eyebrows a bit. Then she just shook her head.
"Ben, don't worry. We don't need Dean. We can handle this. You know, I hunted with Dean before right? We can do this. Now I'm gonna go out first. You help Lexi anyway you can. Let her balance on you or something as she climbs out the window.... Then we will lift you through. Ok?"
Thinking that sounded like a plan Jo looked over at Lexi. Getting herself back together she gave Lexi a bit of a wicked grin.
"Well, here goes nothing' momma."
Chuckling Jo carefully pulled herself up into the window frame. The gun still in her hand. Then carefully eased herself down the other side until she could safely drop down to the ground without too much jarring of herself. Yelling back up through the open window.
"OK.... NEXT!!"
Lexi was trying to be calm, cool and collected. However as another pain grabbed her, she let out a little whimper and saw Ben's eyes widen. Patting him awkwardly, she said. “We’ll be OK."
Just as she said that, Jo hit the screen of the window full force and grinned as it hit the ground below. When the other woman turned and spoke to Ben, the young witch took a moment to collect herself and prepare for the coming ordeal.
When Jo went through the window and dropped to the ground, Lexi sighed and then moved to follow. Using Ben for balance she awkwardly swung her legs over the sill and wiggled until she was dangling over the edge. Then, closing her eyes she slide through and felt Jo catcher on the other side.
Once her feet were on solid ground, both women turned to pull the young boy through. Once they were all in a safer territory, they began to creep around the edge of house. Since the den was on the opposite end of the dwelling, they were going to have to work their way around to the Hummer.
Half way around, another hard pain hit and Lexi couldn't hold back a groan. She knew any sound was dangerous but she simply couldn't help it. Resting against the siding for a moment, she closed her eyes and asked.
"As soon as we reach the corner, we are going to have to make a run for it. The Hummer is in the open and there is every chance the were could be watching. Are we all ready?"
Ben just stared at Jo when she knocked the screen out. He couldn't believe they were about to get Lexi out a little window, and then run to the vehicle before a werewolf could get them. To him, the whole plan just screamed YUP, WE ARE GONNA GET EATEN.
Then, when Jo turned to him, and started talking to him about Dean, he just stood there. He totally wished he hadn't said what he'd said. Now, Jo was sitting here telling him that they didn't need Dean, and that they could do it. He felt like a baby as she talked. So, when she said her plan for getting outside, he just solemnly nodded his head, then groaning lightly after she had climbed out.
Turning towards Lexi, he looked at her, and hoping that she was okay and that the baby was okay, watched her try to climb out, helping all he could, then when she was out, he waited a second, turning back to look at the door, the creature now going crazy as it tried to get through to them.
Taking a deep breath and swallowing nervously, he turned and climbed out, letting Lexi and Jo help him. Watching them move, he quietly followed, trying not to even breathe loudly as they crept around the house. Every little noise made him cringe, as he expected the werewolf to be on them at any time, but it never came. He hoped it was confused enough to still be searching through the house, but, having read all about them, he knew it was smart enough that once it got in the room, it'd know where they went.
Then, he heard Lexi groan and ran around Jo to get to her, whispering as quietly as possible.
"Are you okay? Is the baby okay?"
He was scared they weren't going to make it to the hospital. He didn't know much about having babies, but he figured that if that baby was coming, it wasn't going to wait for them to be READY for it to come, and it had proven just that by decided to come when a werewolf was attacking.
Turning to Lexi as she spoke, he looked around; making sure the wolf wasn't around, then, when she was asked if they were ready, he nodded his head, even though he KNEW he was as far from ready as possible. But, he doubted he'd ever be ready to try to run from a werewolf, so, this was as "ready" as he was getting. Looking up at her, he tried his best to look confident, and, as usual, he looked as cocky as they came.
"I'm ready... Let's do it..."
Everyone got safely out of the window and they started to make their way around the house to get to Max's Hummer sitting in the driveway. It seemed like it was such a long way away.
Jo stopped in her tracks when she heard Lexi moan in pain. She turned to look at the woman and whispered.
"Come one Lex. Just a little bit further." saying that at the same time Ben questioned Lexi to see if she was OK. Jo nodded again as Lexi said they were going to have to make a run for it.
"OK... Keys? Do you have the keys to Max's car?" Jo whispered and held out her hand. Taking the keys from Lexi she tucked them into the pocket of her denim shorts so she wouldn't lose them. They crept around and finally made it to the corner.
"OK, everybody ready? RUN!!" Jo said quietly but urgently.
She took off running herself. Jo didn't get but about 5 steps when suddenly she heard a tremendous roaring sound and stopped and turned to look to her left. Coming right for them was the werewolf. "RUN, RUN" Jo screamed. Get to the car. Jo brought the gun loaded with silver bullets up and started firing at the thing. All she hoped was that the other two could make it to the car. The werewolf was a monster though and it kept coming... Suddenly Jo took off running again to the car but it was too late. The werewolf was running full force at her and tackled her to the ground. The gun fell to the ground and all Jo could do was struggling to keep the beasts teeth away from her.
One moment they were hiding and the next they were flying across the yard. Lexi heard the roar of the creature behind them and then the sound of a gun being discharged in rapid fire. Glancing behind her, the blond tried to gauge how much damage her friend had done but stumbled as her heart caught in her throat.
Watching in horror, she saw Jo go flying with the werewolf right on top of her. Without thought, she spun around and raced back towards the grappling pair while raising her own gun. Afraid of hitting the young woman struggling for her life, Lexi drew as close as she could and then pumped several rounds of silver into the things side. Roaring in pain, the creature fell sideways and started to shake as it lost its wolf form and rotated back and forth between human and animalistic features.
Reaching down towards Jo, Lexi offered her a hand and then half pulled; half dragged her away from the beast. Hissing and growling, it started to its feet but fell again while swiping out with a huge paw like hand. Hiding a grimace as the claws caught her calf muscle; the young witch helped Jo regain her feet and then ran towards the Hummer with her friend at her side.
Ben waited there but at their approach, he wrenched open the door and bailed into the vehicle. Lexi sighed in relief to see him safe. Another roar rang out behind them just as they reached the vehicle and scaled inside. The witch had no sooner slammed her door shut than she saw the creature regain its feet and stumble towards them
"HURRY JO!!! START THE DAMNED VEHICALE!!! ITS COMING!" she screamed out just as another wave of pain hit her.
Ben wasn't as prepared as he thought. As soon as they said run, he took off. Running as fast as he could. Then, there was a roar-like noise, and he stopped just long enough to see it coming at them, then he was running full speed at the car again. Making it, he turned as he heard bullets firing, and saw Jo try to shoot it, but it kept coming, and was soon on top of her. "JO!!!!!!"
He didn't know what to do, everything in him told him to run to her, to do whatever he could to help get it off of her, but he couldn't move. He was frozen there in fear. Then, he saw Lexi start shooting it, and saw it go down, and saw her pull Jo away. Then, it was coming back at them. "Lexi, look out!!!" it was too late when he screamed though. Going down from the pain of all the bullets, and the fact that it was slowly bleeding to death, it fell, but not without slicing it's long claws across Lexi's calf.
He watched them run for him, and then, when they were closer, turned and jerked the door open, and dove inside, scooting over to the far side. Jo hopped into the driver's seat, and soon Lexi had joined him in the back, dropping her gun. Ben sighed in relief, thinking they were finally safe, when he heard Lexi start screaming. Sitting up, he saw the werewolf now running towards the vehicle, teeth bared, snarling wildly.
Then, Lexi started screaming, and Jo was desperately trying to crank the vehicle, but it was too late. The creature was right at the vehicle and looking down at the gun, some sort of natural instinct took over and Ben grabbed it, aiming it out the open window.
The sound of the gun shooting was deafening inside the vehicle, and the roar of the creature was even worse as the bullet hit, blood exploding from its chest as it flew back to the ground.
Ben quickly dropped the gun back to the seat and moved to the window, looking at the dead person laying there, a look of pain and fear mixed in his horrified expression as he lay there, lifeless. "Oh my...." Ben felt his heart break as tears began to well in his eyes. "I didn't know... I... he was...." Ben was horrified at the fact that what lay there, that what he had just killed wasn't a werewolf, but a person. He had just killed a human being.
Jo was still struggling... Not aware of anything else going on around her. The adrenaline pumping through her body kept her from feeling the claws that sliced open her skin. She had bumped her head on the ground when she went down as well. All that she cared about right now was that this thing COULD NOT BITE HER. Then suddenly she heard shots ring out and the creature fell away. Lexi's hand was there and Jo grabbed it automatically. They dashed to the car. Jo slid into the driver’s seat and dug for the keys in her pocket. Lexi had jumped into the back with Ben and for a moment Jo thought everyone was alright. They had made it to the car.
Then she heard Lexi's voice yelling at her to get the car going and Jo knew what that meant. Focusing on getting the right key and plugging it into the ignition she started cranking the engine over when she heard the shots ring out again. Thinking Lexi had picked up the gun again she turned to look over her shoulder. What she saw made her mouth drop open and she couldn't move for a minute. Little Ben was the one that had fired the gun. She watched as he dropped the gun on the seat and saw the horrified look in his eyes. Jo's heart was about to break, wondering how this was going to affect the poor kid.
Sadly, she realized she couldn't think about that now and turned back forward and finally got then motor running and through the Hummer in gear. Stomping on the gas Jo had one last flash of anger rise up. She headed straight for the body lying on the ground. As they raced out of the driveway the SUV was rocked as they ran over the beast. "NOW STAY DOWN DAMN IT." Jo screamed as she continued down the long drive and toward the front gate of their property.

It was about 2 hours after the men had left the house that Curse pushed up from the pool table he was leaning over and glanced at the clock. His bleary eyes took in the time and he glanced at his companion before tossing his cue down.
"Damn Max...... I didn't realize it was getting so late. The girls are going to kill us if we don't get home soon. We've got enough fireworks to do us and enough whiskey in our system to dull any pain that we might feel when they toss us in the dog house..."
Turning to their older companion, Curse grinned a bit drunkenly and dug in his pockets for his keys. As he did so, he felt his phone and pulled it out with them. Tossing the keys of his huge Dodge truck, he continued.
"Looks like your driving, old friend..... I don't think Max or I can be trusted to keep it on the road like this. I think next time we'll play shots only for MISSED shots. Max is one hell of a pool player but .. I still think i"m better." he said with a smirk at the dark haired hunter who looked almost as toasted as he did. "We'll just have to tell the ladies that we were trying to make a point and it got messed up..."
Then, frowning, he commented.
"I'm surprised they haven't called...."
Glancing down at his phone, he flipped it open and discovered that the power was off. Grimacing, he turned on the power and waited for it to boot up before seeing two voicemails flashing.
"I take that back... I think they have. Hold on while I call headquarters."
With deliberate speed, he hit his voicemail and stuck the phone to his ear. When the message began to play, his face lost the drunken look and cold soberity flooded in.
"SON OF A BITCH!!!!" the hunter swore as he cast the others a look and started running for the door before it had even finished playing. "THE GIRLS ARE IN TROUBLE AT THE HOUSE!! SOMETHING ATTACKED THEM AND THEY ARE LOCKED INSIDE!" he swore.
No sooner than he'd hit the front parking lot than he pressed the button for the next message. That one calmed him down a but but not much. Glancing sideways at Max, he closed hte phone and said.
"Bobby.... Get us to the hospital.... Max here is going to be a father!"

Catching the keys as Curse tossed them Bobby wondered why everyone kept harping on his age. 'Old Friend' in deed! What did that make Curse a Snot Nosed Kid?
Watching Curse futzing with his phone Bobby wondered if he had accidentally turned it off after using it.
On the way to pick up the fireworks they had passed a very familiar black Impala. Pulling out his phone Bobby had tried to call the boys but found that Lexi's darn cat had unplugged the charger again and so the battery had died on him. Max would have loaned him his. But the younger man had found that he had left his at the house. Curse had then offered his and Bobby surprised Dean by announcing that they had just passed each other a few minutes ago. Hanging up the unfamiliar phone Bobby may have turn it off instead.
As Curses face lost all color, Bobby's reddened 'Damn something was wrong and they had been out of touch because of his mistake.'
"THE GIRLS ARE IN TROUBLE AT THE HOUSE!! SOMETHING ATTACKED THEM AND THEY ARE LOCKED INSIDE!" All three men were flying out the door, toward the truck and the girls.
"Bobby.... Get us to the hospital.... Max here is going to be a father!"
”SHIT, You'll have to navigate, I don't know my way.” Bobby called back as he gunned the engine and whipped it out of the parking lot laying on the horn to warn the on coming car he was coming out.
The only highlight of the conversation he heard going on around him was, that the girls were no longer locked in the house they were at the hospital. So what ever had attacked them was either dead or fled.

Max was a somewhat more than a little drunk. They had the fireworks that they had come for, and it turned out they all had came to the consensus that a quick game of pool would be a good idea. The doses of whiskey that followed were caused by a challenge between Curse and him to find out who was the better pool player and time flied through them. It was only when the other hunter mentioned about the time that he remembered of checking his watch and a look of surprise crossed his face.
Giving a smirk to the other man as he moved away from the pool table considering how insane Curse was for thinking he played better than him. If it wasn’t so late, he would show the other guy…or find out if it was just his ego saying so.
When he heard about the girls not calling, he searched his pockets for his phone before remembering he had forgotten it at the house. He had looked for them earlier when they stopped at the bar, but the alcohol was doing a great work of numbing his mind. He was sure the girls were alright, Lexi was still weeks away from the due date and what kind of trouble they could get staying back home?
As he witnessed all color flee from Curse’s face, he knew immediately that something was wrong. The girls were being attacked? He felt his heart sank with worry. He should be there with his wife, the single thought of something happening to Lexi was enough to bring an avalanche of guilty upon his head. Great hero he was, leaving his own pregnant wife to be attacked by God knows what. Not only her, but Jo and Ben too. He was at fault, he should have checked with her earlier, he shouldn’t have forgotten his damned phone back at Jo’s place!
He rushed out, not worrying to wait for the others, but they all reached the parking lot around the same time. And then another announcement made him froze and his eyes widen. He was…the baby was on its way? Lexi was ok?
He joined the others on the car, but he was eerily silent. A thousand thoughts rushed through his mind at the same time as he impatiently waited as Bobby drove towards the hospital. He was in shock, his head filled with concern and guilt.
