JoJo was still in bed. Laying there not really wanting to get up. It had been a few days now since her mother had shown up at the Wicked grand opening. They had gotten her settled in the downstairs bedroom. The room was large enough, had it's own bathroom and was set off to the back of the house so it had a sense of privacy to it. A perfect set up for long term guests.
Over the last several days Jo had pretty much spilled her guts to her mother. Telling her everything that had happened to her in the last couple years. Some things her mother had already known about, hearing things about her daughter from time to time through the hunter grapevine. Other things had been a bit of a shock to Ellen.
In the end, explaining things about Curse had been the hardest. Jo knew her mother was still leery about him and would be until she was able to meet him face to face. Jo understood that, but was still desperate to make her understand how much she loved him and how much she needed him.
Jo had told Ellen what she knew about Curse's mission. Which wasn't' much. Just that it was something he had to do. His old Seal team was in trouble and his former commander needed his help to go in and rescue them. Jo had no idea where he was. He'd only been able to call her a couple times and send her messages a few others. Then suddenly she hadn't heard from him in over a week now.
These thoughts were what was going through her mind right now while she hugged the pillow to herself tighter. Wearing an old t-shirt of her husbands to sleep in as she had done every night since he had been gone. It was somewhat of a comfort, but it didn't stop the worry and the feeling of dread she had. She had been waking up in the night lately with nightmares. All she wanted was for her husband to come home to her. Something was very wrong though, she could feel it.

Ellen was an early riser and today was no different. Jo was still asleep so she took the oppurrtunity to make a pot of coffee and then fill her cup. For a few hours, she worked on some research for a hunter friend and then stepped outside to enjoy the morning sunshine on the porch. Seating in the huge wooden swing, she was thinking over everything that had happened the last few days when she spotted a dark blue sedan pulling into the driveway. Frowning, she watched as a gentleman in full dress blues got out of the back with a brief case and an envelope. Dread filled her and she got to her feet as he approached.
"Hello." the man said. "I'm looking for a Mrs. Gabriel Jordan?"
Crossing her arms, Ellen stared at him.
"I'm Mrs. Jordans mother. What can I do for you?"
"I'm afraid that I need to speak to her personally, Ma'am."
Arching a brow, the older woman took in his rank of Captain and then the envelope he held.
"My daughter is sleeping. She's heavily pregnant with twins and needs her rest. Let me see if she is up..."
Moving to the door, she opened it and then waved him inside.
"If you'll wait here..."
Moving towards the master bedroom, Ellen tapped on the door and called out.
"Jo.. honey.. THere is someone here to see you. I think you better come to the living room."
As she waited for a response, Ellen prayed that what she suspected wasn't true. Since her daughters husband worked for the government, there could be many a number of reasons for the man's arrival but deep inside, she knew there was only one for full dress blues and the personal delivery.

JoJo heard the footsteps coming up the stairs and then the knocking on the door. Her mother's voice came through telling her there was someone at the house to see her. Jo squinted her eyes in thought, wondering who would be there to see her. If it had been Lexi or someone her mom would surely have mentioned it. Jo called back to let her mother know she was getting up. "I'm awake. I'll be right down." Pushing herself up into a sitting position she swung her legs over the side and used the bedside table to help her stand up. It seemed like she was getting bigger everyday and it was just a little bit harder to get out of bed every morning.
Jo put on a pair sweat pants and then slipped on her robe. She quickly brushed her hair back into a ponytail and then headed toward the door. Opening the door and stepping out she saw her mother still there. "What's going on, who's here this early in the morning?" Not really waiting for an answer Jo headed down the stairs. Still rubbing the sleep out of her eyes she stopped dead in her tracks when she got to the bottom. She turned to look at her mother and then back at the man in the uniform. "Are you Mrs. Gabriel Jordan ma'am?" The way he said it sounded so odd. No one had ever called her that before. All she could do was nod her head as she stared at him. The man looked serious as he spoke again. "Maybe you might want to have a seat ma'am?" Jo blinked her eyes a few times, taken aback a bit. She had a really bad feeling and she found her stubbornness had decided to rear it's head now. "I think I'd rather stand thanks. Can you just get down to it... What do you want? I take it this has something to do with my husband? What the hell is going on? Did he get sent out on another mission? When the hell is he coming home?" Jo started to feel the panic coming on. Her voice getting louder and higher in pitch as she spoke. This was not going to be good and she knew it.

As they waited for Jo to join them, Ellen offered the man some coffee that he declined graciously and then watched as her daughter finally arrived to greet him. Crossing her arms over her chest, she noted the stubborn tilt of her chin after the officer asked her to have a seat and almost smiled. That was her girl. Her smile swiftly faded however when the man cleared his throat and started speaking.
"Mrs. Jordan, it is with deepest regret that I have been sent to inform you of your husbands death on foreign soil. He was reported missing in action seventy two hours ago and we just recieved proof of his death twenty four hours ago. His body was ... burnt.. beyond recognition but his wedding band and dog tags were recovered from the site."
Pausing for a moment to let the news sink in, the officer took a step closer so that he could support her if she should faint.
"Due the fact that Lt. Jordan worked as an independent contractor for the United States Military and retained military reserve status, he will be honor with a full gun salute and burial ceremony. The United States government would like to extend its deepest condolences and assure you that the criminals responsible for this tragedy will be punished. I am under orders also to assure you that you will be recieving a monthly military pention that was to be Lt. Jordans and full military benefits for the rest of your natural life along with your children."
Shock held Ellen in place for a long moment before she moved swiftly to Jo's side and wrapped an arm about her waist. Guiding her to the sofa, she watched the horror and shock reflect across her face but had no words to ease the burden. The news of her own husbands death flooded her and her heart broke for the pain she knew Jo was feeling. Holding her tight, she waited for the combustion she knew was coming.

JoJo stared blankly at the man as he started to speak. All the words after 'deepest regret' barely registering in her mind. She got the point though. The man was telling her that her husband was dead. Killed in the line of duty. Blah, blah, blah. The rest of it didn't really matter.
Suddenly feeling sick to her stomach Jo closed her eyes and willed herself to stay standing up. She could feel her body starting to tremble. And she was a bit surprised to discover that the first wave of emotion to wash over her was one of anger.
Reaching out she snatched the packet he had in his hand. Holding it up and waving in the air. "Is that what this is? What you brought me? His ring and his dog tags?" Jo was running on pure fury now. Screaming at the man, who she knew really was only the messenger. But, she didn't care. She ripped open the envelope and pulled out the ring and dog tags. There was paperwork inside as well but that didn't interest her.
Taking a step back as the man moved toward her. She continued to back away from him until she felt her mother's arm around her waist. As her mom moved her toward the couch she just wanted to let her self fall into it and sag against her mother but she didn't. Dropping the envelope on the coffee table she stared at the metal objects she was holding in her hand. Then the dam burst. She looked at the man in the fancy dress uniform and if she could have shot daggers from her eyes she would have. "You dare come into my house to tell me my husband is dead and return a couple of trinkets? This is ALL YOUR FAULT! He's gone because of YOU! Stupid government idiots... He had done his time, served his country but it wasn't enough. You had to take him one more time and now he's not coming back?!" Jo was raging and screaming at the man. She broke from her mother's protective arm and advanced on the man. Curling her hands into fists she began to hit him on the chest. Still screaming at him. The tears falling like a raging river now that she had no control over. "I hate you!! Get the HELL out of my house! NOW!! Go!!" The fists that were hitting the poor man had turned into hands that were shoving him away now. Pushing him toward the door. As if him leaving would mean none of this had really happened. Sobs wracked her body now as her ranting began to wind down. She started to hyperventilate and couldn't catch her breath. Reaching out she held onto her mother and made her way to the couch to sit down now. Her one hand still clutched the ring and dog tags and she could feel them digging into the palm of her hand. Opening her hand she sat and stared at them as she gulped in air. Trying to breath. She had no idea what to do, it seemed that her brain had just shut itself off.

Ellen could only watch as her daughter lost her composure and started tearing the man apart. When she finally fell silent, it was as she'd shut down completely. Her mother could do nothing more than wrap her in her arms and hold her, hoping to ease some of the pain she knew she was feeling. In her own mind, she grieved for the loss in her own way though she'd never meet him.
Over the last few days, it had become obvious that the couple shared a deep, abiding love and now it had been ripped away tragically. While Jo had rested during the afternoons, Ellen had used the time to research her new son in law and what she had found gave her a healthy degree of respect for the man who would be the father of her grandbabies. She'd actually been looking forward to meeting him and now... now she never would have the oppurtunity.
Sighing, Ellen eased away from Jo and then fluffed some pillows beside her. Since her baby seemed lost in her thoughts, she urged her to rest on them while she moved to the kitchen to get her something to drink. Spying the phone on the wall, she glanced back at Jo and then back at the thing. Making a decision, she quickly picked up it and dialed a number. When a voice answered on the other end, she quickly related the news and then nodded. Hanging up, she filled a glass with milk and took it back to Jo.
"Baby.... Lexi and Max are on their way over..... I think you need someone here besides me to help you through this.... You have to remember the babies."

JoJo could do nothing but stare off into the distance as the tears continued to run down her face. She felt her mother's arms around her and she leaned into her trying to take comfort but it wasn't working. The only thing that was going through her mind was that her husband wasn't coming home again. Everything else seemed faraway.
Her movements were mechanical, like on automatic pilot as sat on the couch. It barely registered when her mother got up and moved away into the kitchen. Wiping at the tears streaming down her fast she saw her hand and realized she was still holding something.
Jo opened her hand and stared down at the dog tags and Curse's wedding ring. Choking bag sobs as she touched them lightly. The chain on the dog tags was still intact and with shaking hands she unclasped it. Adding the ring to the chain she re-clasped it and then slipped it on over her head.
Leaning against the cushions her mother had laid out for her Jo reclined back on the couch. Trying to find a comfortable position. She watched vacantly as her mother came back from the kitchen with a glass of milk. She motioned for her mother to set the glass down on the coffee table and nodded in acknowledgment when her mother mentioned calling Lexi. Then she spoke softly, barely above a whisper. "I think we should call that Derek person we met at the club the other night. Maybe he can find out... I don't know, something more. I want to know what really happened." Jo tried to pull herself together. Letting herself sink back into the pillows. Her mind was numb. As she closed her eyes she felt the babies inside her kick. With one hand she rubbed her belly. It was like they knew something was wrong. With her other hand she touched the chain that was now around her neck. She had no idea what she was going to do. How she was going to get through this without him. The idea of their babies never knowing their father tore her heart apart.
