This right here was what made the fight worth it. Watching these young ones clamour and shout their greetings and having his beautiful wife waiting with a smile. As they all tagged him and tried climbing up his legs, Curse grinned and then took his little "Princess" Tellie from her mom.
"I think you have your answer there. I know that I certainly missed you too baby."
Grinning, he kissed Jo back quickly and then reached down to pick up Simi and toss her in front of Bastian on his old gelding. Giving the boy a wink and knowing what he would do, the hunter turned away from him and pulled his own brood away from the horse.
Wrapping an arm around Jo, he pulled her close and gave her a long hard kiss that made promises for later in the evening and conveniently distracted her from the site of one lone horse skirting the corral and heading off towards the rest of the compound. He knew that Bastian and Simi were both anxious to see their parents and there would be adults watching between here and there.
"I guess I do have my answer! Man... I guess its a good thing I brought something for you all then, huh??"
Just as he said that, he felt a little hand steal into his pocket and glanced down to see Tessa biting her tongue as she searched for the treat he allows brought back. When she pulled out the PEZ candy, the kids shouted in glee and immediately fell on the present. Tellie immediately reached out for hers and Curse gave her a kiss before helping her open it and setting her on the ground with her 3 siblings. Glancing at Jo and seeing her expression, he gave her grin and then whispered in her ear.
"I have something for you too later.... I think I promised you some chocolate and whipped cream right?"
Then, swooping up Tessa, he tossed her up on his shoulders and the kids took off running in their normal game of "Tag". It was a ritual for each time he came home after a mission and released the tension everyone felt for the wait.

Taking a deep breath, Shane tried to give Jazz a reassuring look but decided it was probably time for her to go get Trey. Giving supper a look, she sighed and then got to her feet to stall the restlessness that suddenly hit her.
"Baby... I'm fine but... I need you to do me a favor... Can you run over to headquarters and see if Trey is about ready to come home?? I really think I need him here...."
Turning away, Shane gasped as another pain hit even harder and she suddenly felt something very uncomfortable down below. Grasping the counter, she tried to breath through it and saw her daughters face go pale.
"Um... Yeah.... Jazz... go.. now..." she bit out as she tried to move through the pain. "Tell him to HURRY.. Please?"
Thankful that the twins were at least in the play pen, Shane drew herself up full petite height and rubbed the small of her back as the pain faded. A quick glance at the clock said she had about 10 minutes before the next one so she quickly turned the chicken and checked the potatoes. She may be going into labor but that was no excuse for letting it get in the way of normal life, she thought to herself as she kept herself busy.
In the back of her mind, she fought with the fear of giving birth in these conditions. After Jessies' death due to complications, it had brought forth the hard truth of their lack of knowledge and supplies. Now, every woman knew that the risks were high no matter how easy her pregnancy was and Shane had bled badly with Julie's birth. Just that thought put the young mother on edge and made her nerves even brittler.

Post by Ben Braeden on Oct 17, 2009 18:33:12 GMT -5
Ben walked with his eyes on the ground, avoiding everyone's eyes as he walked towards them. He knew it was obvious what he had been doing. He was going to leave. On the inside, he knew it was because he was worried, because he was scared, but to everyone else, he had just made it out that he had been tired of waiting on them, a charade that he had come to be good at pulling off.
As he walked towards the house, he noticed someone in front of him, looking up into the blue-eyed gaze of Lexi. He didn't really say much, just looked at her. He was relieved that she and Max were back and safe, truth was, he was more than relieved, but part of him wished he had gone out to find them. He hated feeling cooped up in the compound. Part of him enjoyed every moment of hunting on the outside, finding the demons and croates who had ruined everything for them, and making them pay for it.
Finally he sighed, knowing she wouldn't just let him pass by.
Dropping his bags to the ground, carefully as not to damage any of his weapons hidden inside them, he looked up at her, watching her hand reach into her coat pocket, coming back out with a stack of comics. His hazel eyes gleamed when he saw them, the only way that he really expressed how much he loved seeing his gifts.
"Hey there, kiddo.... I brought you something back..... While we were out, we had to hide in an old comic store... Thought you might enjoy some light reading... I think there is everything from Xmen to Batman in here..."
Ben gave a lite smirk to her, a rarity for him in these days, and nodded his head. "Thanks... It'll be nice to have something to do..."[/b]
Ben reached out for them, taking them in his hand, but she didn't let go. Ben pulled lightly, but her hand held them for a moment, causing Ben to look back into her eyes. He was expecting her to say something to him, scold him for having planned on leaving, especially alone. But the worry he had felt for them still was there, as he knew that even the compound wasn't the safest place.
Looking down at the comics in his hand, he nodded his head lightly, then put them into one of the smaller bags he had before looking back up at her.
"I missed you out there.... Everything Ok?"
Hearing her say that, Ben was tempted to hug her, to tell her that he had missed them too, that he had been worried. He wanted to tell her that he had been scared to lose them, that he had decided to go find them, to bring them back, but, no. He couldn't do that. to Ben, if he opened up, it made him weak, and if he was weak, he couldn't do his job, so, all he did was shrug.
"Yeah, everyone seemed really scared when you guys were late. I got tired of waiting, was gonna go find you."[/b] Part of Ben hated the way he acted, but, part of him hoped that Lexi knew what he really meant. He hoped that she, Max, Bastian, and Simi knew how much they meant to him. "And yeah, everything's fine. Y'all are alive, supplies were found, everything's good. Another week we can live here."[/b]
Looking down at his bags in the dirt, Ben heard footsteps approaching, and glanced over to see Max walking towards them with Bastian and Simi. Ben worried about the two of them, was scared about what would happen to them. First off, the angels, demons, and croates all wanted the Blair family dead and gone, and second off, Ben didn't want them to grow up to be like him. He wanted them to be happy, not have to be cold.
"You wanna give these to your siblings?? You'll be their hero forever if you do...."
Turning back to her, Ben looked down at her hand, seeing the candy dispensers. Holding out his hand, Ben took them, nodding. The idea of being their hero made him chuckle lightly under his breath, but he knew as rare as candy was, it would make their week to get some, and he wanted nothing more than to see Bastian and Simi smile.
Taking the candies, he turned towards the others, smirking at the kids as the smiled at him, waiting for them to come over.
"Hey kiddos, guess what?"[/b] he said, smiling at them with the candy hidden. "Now that Mom and Dad are back, you guys are getting a BIG surprise."[/b]
Leaning down to their height, he smirked, holding out his hand to them, revealing the PEZ candies and the little toy dispensers. The giggling of the young children that followed, and how fast they jerked the stuff from his hands, hugging him and thanking him, made Ben grin to himself. He felt like he had actually done something good, though he knew it was Max and Lexi, and Curse, who had.

Jazz Coulter - Blair/Jordan Compound: Coulter Home to HQ - October 2014Jazz watched her mother carefully. Measuring her words as she spoke. Jazz may have only been 14 but she wasn't stupid. She'd been around when the other two babies had been born. She knew something was going on. Sitting there for a moment she nodded her head when her mother asked her to get Trey.
It took her a moment, she was still eyeing her mother and a frown creased her face. Jazz's eyes went wide when Shane practically doubled over and gripped the kitchen counter. Worried now she was a stunned and didn't move until her mother spoke a bit more forcefully this time.
The pain in her mother's voice finally spurned her into action. Without another word Jazz jumped up from her chair and was heading out the front door of the house. As soon as she got outside she started to run. She ran as fast as she could over a path she knew well to the compounds headquarters building.
Arriving in the area of the building she slowed down a bit when she saw the group of people outside. Lexi, Max and Ben, plus the two little ones. Slipping into a light jog she didn't stop but just waved at them as she went by. Getting to the front door she pushed them open forcefully and ran to the monitoring room where she was sure she would find Trey.
Finally stopping when she saw Trey she bent over with her hands on her knees. Trying to catch her breath after running all the way over. She looked up at the man who she considered her father. "Hey dad... Ummm, you need to come home. Mom needs you... Like, Uh... Right NOW! I think it's baby time." Jazz was still taking in big gulps of air as she waited for him to say something. She had a serious look on her face and she was worried about her mother. Jazz knew all too well the dangers of giving birth in these conditions. Her aunt Jess had died from complications. When Trey didn't move right away she widened her eyes at him and gave a little bit of a grunt. "DAD! She said NOW! Seriously!" The tone of her voice finally got his attention. She watched as he got to his feet, then notified someone to take over monitoring security and headed out the door. Jazz was right on his heels.

Letting go of Bastian and Simi as they looked at the candy with eager eyes, his gaze settled on Ben. He was a young man now and even if they weren’t blood related, he was like a son to Max. Not that the hunter believed he had been a good parent to him, it made him feel guilty for not being able to convince Ben to just be a kid and try to have a normal life while he could. And now that it wasn’t a possibility anymore he would see so much of himself in him, a mix of determination and despair for knowing this was the best future they could have.
Turning away from the others, Max was unable to stare at them anymore. Reaching into one of the duffle bags before they were taken away, he took a bottle of vodka from it and moved away so he could be alone and hope the alcohol would drawn his failure. He opened his mouth to speak but immediately changed his mind, what was there that he could say anyways?
He hated to feel like this, like a zombie. And not like one of those outside, who were filled with anger and a killer instinct. No, Max felt empty inside. The only merciful moments he would feel anything that resembled life would be when he was in his wife’s arms or seeing a smile in the kids’ faces.
Finding a quiet and dark place that fitted his mood, he opened the bottle and gulped down the vodka like it was water. The burn that followed was a welcomed relief as he closed his eyes.
And as he delved into his memories of a few years ago, happier times that seemed like a lifetime ago, he could see his wife’s magnificent blue eyes open to gaze upon him as he would wake her by placing a soft kiss on her lips. She would smile and pull herself up while he would watch the golden locks of her hair fall down upon her shoulders, a perfect goddess as he always said she was. And before long Bastian would rush into the room with a big grin on his face and drag them out of bed to go see the Christmas presents Santa had left him under the tree while he was at sleep.

Trey Coulter - Blair/Jordan Compound: HQ to Coulter Home - October 2014Trey continued to drink coffee and watch the monitors. Then finally he felt a sense of relief as the front gates opened and he saw the vehicle and the team drive through. It didn't take them long to get to the building. Then Curse came bursting through the doors. He dumped off some bags of supplies, said something about his 'wife's cute ass' and hugging his kids. Then he was out the door again, leaving Trey shaking his head and chuckling. He knew the feeling well though. Coming home from a mission all he wanted to do was see his wife and kids too. That's what really mattered these days.
The rest of the team seemed to be milling around. Ben had come down to meet them. Then Trey saw on one of the cameras Jazz running toward the operations building. He couldn't help but smile as he watched her. She was a good kid. He figured she was just happy the team was home, he knew she'd probably been watching the security monitors at home.
Trey was a bit surprised though when Jazz came running through the doors to find him. He watched her curiously as she tried to catch her breath. "Hey Jazz. What's up?" He greeted her cautiously. His eyes taking in the look on her face. He furrowed his brow as she started to speak. Giving her an odd look back he shook his head, not sure he had heard her correctly the first time. Then in an exasperated tone she spoke again. "DAD! She said NOW! Seriously!" Holy Shit!, he thought to himself. It had caught him off guard at first. The arrival of the mission team back home had his attention and he hadn't thought about anything else for the last hour or so. When it finally did sink in he leapt to his feet and ran out of the building. Following the same path Jazz had run down he moved toward the house. He could feel Jazz following along behind him so he just kept moving until he got to the front door.
Throwing the door open Trey stepped inside the house. He saw the babies in the living room and scanned the interior quickly for Shane. Then noises coming from the kitchen caught his attention and he headed that way as he spoke over his shoulder to Jazz. "Keep your eye on the little ones." Trey crossed into the kitchen and spotted Shane standing over the stove. He almost let out a laugh of amusement but the look on her face stopped him. It figured though that she'd be up and around trying to push through like everything was just fine. "Shane! Damn it... What are you doing? We need to get you laying down. Christ woman, you want to give me a damn heart attack?" Walking over to his wife he put his arm around her. He had to practically force her to put down the tongs she was using to turn the chicken. Then he turned her around and guided her back through the house, into their bedroom. Gently helping her ease herself into a sitting position on the bed. He knelt down on the floor in front of her and looked into her eyes. "Hey, are you OK? How far apart are the pains? What do you want me to do?" They had been through this before, but that didn't mean he wasn't still nervous as hell. He held her hands and brought them to his lips and kissed them softly. Giving her a reassuring smile.

Jo Jordan - The Jordan Residence - October 2014Jo smiled as Curse took the baby from her. Then he suddenly swept her up with one arm and was kissing her deeply. He could still make her whole body feel like it was on fire when he kissed her like that and she let herself get lost in it. She knew it was a bit of a decoy but it didn't matter it felt so good right now. Her heart raced and she was a bit breathless when he finally let her go.
It didn't escape her attention the horse with it's two small riders heading off to the main part of the compound. She knew they'd be fine. They just wanted to see their parents. Jo gave Curse a roll of her eyes but was smiling at the same time. Just to let him know that he hadn't fooled her but that she was OK with it.
Then the focus was back on their own family. The grin on Curse's face melted her heart. She loved to see him with the kids. When he made the announcement that he'd brought them something she saw that Tessa was already busy checking his pockets. Shaking her head a bit she grinned brightly as Tessa struck gold and pulled the PEZ dispenser out of her father's pocket.
Jo let out a laugh as all of the kids received their presents and were excitedly playing with them. It warmed her heart to see everyone enjoying this family moment. There could still be some happiness in this dark world they lived in now. It's the reason they fought so hard to make things right.
After a few moments of just reveling in the children's delight Curse was at her side again. Whispering in her ear. She looked up at him, letting her gaze meet his. In the middle of the light hearted family moment his comment almost had her blushing. She grinned wickedly though and gave him a wink. Whispering back. "I can wait. It'll be worth it I know." Jo licked her lips and felt that feeling of warmth in the core of her body. The man still did it for her and tripped her trigger like nobody's business. She sighed a bit, not really wanting to wait but she would. They would have their time when the kids were settled down later. Her mind still drifting to later that night she laughed again as Curse swept up Tessa and the chaos ensued again as the children scattered. Running around and playing like they didn't have a care in the world.

"Shane! Damn it... What are you doing? We need to get you laying down. Christ woman, you want to give me a damn heart attack?"
The sound of Trey's voice startled her and she felt him trying to take her utensil. Dismay filled her as she stare at the chicken and then looked up at him.
"But honey.... I need to finish supper.. the kids are going to be hungry..." she stammered out.
However, ignoring all her protests, her husband helped her back towards the bedroom. Just as he eased her back, she felt her water break and groaned. Even though she'd been through this 3 times already it was still embarrassing.
"Hey, are you OK? How far apart are the pains? What do you want me to do?"
Looking upwards, she grimaced and choked out.
"I think I need to change my clothing... and the bedding now.... A shower might be the thing...... Is the Doctor in the compound somewhere? I think we should maybe alert her soon...."
Rubbing her tummy as it tightened in yet another pain, she gasped.
"I don't think this little one is going to wait very long this time...I think its ready to come and join our little family." she choked out.

Dr. Helena Nicodeu - Blair/Jordan Compound - Coulter Home - October 2014
Ah, what a beautiful day. The skies were clear, the air crisp and clean, and the sounds of horses neighing from far away made her think of old times. She always did love those big, majestic animals…the way they moved, the way they loved so easily…
But definitely not the poop. Especially when one’s mind is off in some far off place and not on the path ahead.
“Oh, foo,” Leaning sideways on a tree stump, Helena wrinkled her nose at the horse poo that coated her sneaker. Well, that was definitely a dampening point on a relatively nice day. Setting her leather laptop case on the ground carefully by her unmarked foot, she proceeded to snag a leaf and commence with the cleaning.
Jeeze, she really had to start watching where she was going…but it was just so darned hard around here! Ever since she’d moved in, she’d got caught up in the hills, the smiling faces, the ranch-style houses…
Maybe her real home had always been Texas, or Montana. Boy, she did love the simple smell of grass and silence. Now, if only the world outside were that normal.
Straightening with a sigh, she picked up her bag and continued down the path. What seemed like a lifetime ago, tragedy had brought her back to Louisiana from the big city and a similar happenstance had brought her from her cozy house on Bourbon to the Blair/Jordan compound. Not that she was complaining; she was still doing what she’d devoted her life to. Still patching up hunters, helping the sick and making sure expectant mothers were doing well enough to see their baby’s faces when the time came.
Which was exactly why she was walking so nonchalantly toward the house of one of the more prominent families in the compound, bearing gifts of the medical kind. Having managed to talk a hunter into raiding hospital storerooms for prenatal vitamins and other antibiotics, she’d scrounged up all of her supplies and made her rounds. She was still a bit low on penicillin and could probably use another sterile suture kit, but all in all, the bag at her side was stocked well enough.
Coming up to the Coulter house, she patted her bag and climbed the front steps. She’d been on her feet for most of the day, checking on patients and making sure everyone was getting the vitamins and goodies that they needed, but she didn’t mind. A sore toe was worth seeing a patient’s face light up as they ran, healthy as a horse, around the fields chasing soccer balls and taking care of their families.
“Hello?” She called out, knocking on the door. “It’s Helena Nicodeu. I’ve just come to check on Shane and the baby?”

Ilani Moonblood - Blair/Jordan Compound - October 2014
“Okay, so, you cock the lever here…then just point it up and shoot? That’s it? Dude, it’s not much of a modification if what you gotta do is exactly like the original. Didn’t you say that you upped the power on this baby? I mean, it even looks the same! And—AIIIEEEEE!”
With a sound akin to an explosion, the gun currently positioned against her shoulder proceeded to fire and sent the woman holding it flying backward in a move that would have made any stunt double proud.
Now, the person who’d just landed with a thud on the dirt? Definitely not so proud.
“Oh my gah, I hate you,” Ilani informed the white faced hunter looking down at her, eyeballs as big as dinner plates. When he reached down to help her up, she waved him off, putting the gun down at her side. “No, no, I’m alright. I’m just gonna lay here. Contemplate life, think about metaphors…wonder if I’ll ever be able to feel my butt again…”
As the hunter- note to self: never ask a gun crazy newbie to fiddle with her shotgun, even if his weapon collection was bigger than her comic book one- scurried away with a frightened look on his face, all she could do was sigh. Why was it that every time she tried something new, it backfired right in her face?
Or, in this instance, right on her tail bone. Oh, for CRYING out loud…
Sitting up with a groan, she couldn’t help but shake her fist as the sky, as if whoever was watching Upstairs had caused her to bruise her butt. Given the more recent events, it probably wasn’t such a meaningless thing to flip off the sky, but it made her feel a bit better, at least.
The field in which she sat was silent, still humming with the aftershock of the manipulated gun’s blast- or was that just the ringing in her ears?- and pleasantly empty. The target she’d set up at the opposite end was completely obliterated, little tendrils of smoke rising from the still sizzling body.
Alright, maybe going to a trigger happy hunter for modifications on a gun wasn’t such a bad idea.
Ever since life as she’d known it- where the weirdest things she’d ever experienced were dead people and unruly poltergeists- had gone from strange to mind blowing, Ilani had found herself faced with things she’d normally thought were saved for Halloween. All those stories Uncle Two Trees had said about skinwalkers, shapeshifters, unnatural spirits and tricky monsters were true, there really was a God and a Lucifer- ball was still up in the air about the pointy tailed thing, though- and all her fears about there being a psycho, child-eating thing in her closet could have actually been for good reason. She no longer had her beautiful bar, or got to kick her favorite bikers’ butts…
But hey, she was dealing. It wasn’t like life was too bad, even if she’d been forced to leave The Pit, her clientele, her band and apartment and—
“Whoof, deep breaths. Think happy thoughts, Ilani, before you try shooting something again.” She closed her eyes, took a deep, calming breath and proceeded to do just as her common sense commanded. She thought of the little house she was thinking of converting into a bar, if the Blairs/Jordans would allow it, the fact that her uber-gun could definitely help out in the field, if she ever got a chance to test it…
And a certain drool worthy shifter and his sexy butt. Ah, there we go. All nice and calm.
Letting the gun flop over her shoulder, she gave one more look at the smoldering target before turning around to head back to the others. Gah, hopefully the bang wasn’t too loud to make the others think something was going down. Or that the gun crazy hunter had told someone she’d been hurt. Or…
Oh crap. Definitely time to hustle.

Victor Boudreaux - Blair/Jordan Compound - October 2014 A lot of things can happen in a five years span. Family, love, friends and most of the world could be lost in that exact amount of time…not to mention getting closer to being sent to hell and becoming the thing you hate the most. And that can change a man’s life, Victor Collins Boudreaux was the perfect example of it. And changes had gone far beyond just the visual realm, the big dragon tattoos on his chest, his head shaved bald... The once fun loving and talkative bartender had turned into the hardened soldier with little to say. With his time running out and the hell hounds closer with each passing day, he now wanted to take down as many of the bastards he could before he went down himself. What the hell, go out with a bang! And to those who didn’t know him, he was the crazy happy trigger guy with a death wish, what suited him just fine. In the end of the day all that mattered was saving those who were innocent and blasting the wicked. A good night of sleep and then start again in the next day until his time runs out. All things considered, it was the best way to go down and he had made his peace with it. As others hurried their step as he walked next to him and gave him furtive scared looks, Vic just carried on. Let everyone think he should be in a sanatorium, what mattered about others opinions when all could be over the next day? Well, one thing still mattered as he grabbed a spoon and enjoyed it, he still did the damned best chocolate mousse in the apocalyptic world. Seeing a little kid eyeing him with pleading eyes he slid his cup over to him. “There kid, you have it. I have guard duty in five minutes anyways,” he said as he ruffled the kid’s hair and noticed his smile before leaving the kitchen. All right, it was time to watch the gates and act all crazy like again. Just another day in the post apocalyptic world, only 512 days to go… ---

Trey Coulter - Blair/Jordan Compound: Coulter Home - October 2014Trey knelt looking up at Shane. When she spoke about needing to change her clothes he knew what had happened. He reached up and touched her face gently. Giving her a soft kiss on the cheek he put his arms around her and leaned his forehead against hers. "Baby, it's going to be all right. I'm going to take care of you OK. We'll find the doctor. I'll take care of the bed while you take a shower if that will make you feel better. Let me help you to the bathroom." Kissing her on the forehead he helped her get up off the bed and guided her to the bathroom and the shower. He got her some towels and a clean night gown she could put on when she was done and left them all on the counter for her.
Once Shane was situated in the shower he moved back out to the bedroom and started pulling the linens off the bed. He took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Now was not the time to panic. Everything would be OK he reassured himself. "Jazz! Come here please." Trey called out to the teenager. He was going to need her help now. When she appeared in the doorway of the bedroom he turned to her. "Hey Jazz. You're going to need to look after the babies and the dinner on the stove. Can you get on the radio and give a call down, see if someone can find the doctor and have them send her our way? Thanks Jazz." After she went off back to the main part of the house Trey resumed taking care of the bed. Piling the old linens in the corner for now he went to the linen closet and got a clean set of sheets, a blanket and a comforter. He quickly made the bed and then went back over to the bathroom to check on Shane.

Jazz Coulter - Blair/Jordan Compound: Coulter Home - October 2014Jazz trailed behind Trey all the way back to the house. She followed him inside and nodded as he told her to keep an eye on the kids. She was nervous but felt better now that Trey was home. Sitting on the couch she chewed on her fingernails while she waited.
Watching she saw her mom and dad walk through the living room and head into their bedroom. Once they left the kitchen she got up and went in there to check on the food cooking on the stove. After a little bit she hear Trey call out to her. She went to their room and leaned against the door frame and raised an eyebrow at him. He told her he needed her help and she nodded her acknowledgment and then headed out of the room back out to the living room. She was just about to head into the kitchen again when she heard someone at the door.
Jazz stopped, then turned, heading over to the front door. She pulled the door open to find the doctor standing there. Giving the woman a bit of a relieved smile she spoke. "Hi Doctor Nicodeu, I'm Jazz, Shane and Trey's daughter. I don't know if you remember me. You have awesome timing. I think my mom just went into labor. Come on in I'll take you to them." Jazz opened the door all the way to allow the doctor to come inside. Then closing the door behind them. Motioning for the doctor to follow her Jazz headed back to the bedroom again. Stopping in the doorway she knocked on the door frame to let them know she was there. "Dad, Mom... The doctor is here." Jazz stepped off to the side so the doctor could get into the bedroom. Giving the doctor another quick smile, then looking back to the living room. "I have to go take care of the other kids and supper. Nice to see you again doctor." Jazz turned and left again, back to the living room. Thankful that the doctor had arrived. Between Trey and the doctor, her mother was in good hands.

The sound of metal clinking on metal resounded through the shop as the radio blared out an old Aerosmith song. A passerby would hear the sound of a gravelly voice singing along if they listened carefully but no one was in clear view. It was only when you looked closely that you found long legs sticking out from underneath an old army jeep and discovered that the source of the bangs was a dark haired man working on the under carriage of the vehicle. As Steven Tyler belted out his song, the ball of one steal toed foot kept rythem. "Yeah, sing with me, sing for the year. Sing for the laughter, an' sing for the tear. Sing it with me, if it's just for today. Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away-ay-ay.
Dream on, dream on, dream on, Dream until your dream come true.
Dream on, dream on, dream on, Dream until your dream come true."
Just as the chorus finished up, a loud "BANG" reverbarated through out the compound and the man shot upwards only to bang his head against the oil pan. Swearing loudly, Derek DeVoux shoved himself out from under the jeep and stared up at the ceiling with a resigned expression. "Damn, Damn and Double Damn." he swore to himself before getting to his feet and wiping his grease soaked hands on the faded fatigues he wore. Taking up a rag, the good looking shifter moved towards the open bay doors and glanced this way and that. Finally, catching sight of a familiar figure darting away from what was no doubt the scene of the crime, he sighed and headed to intercept her. Whenever there was a disturbance in the area, its almost always involved his mate. Moving quickly and silently, he made it to the far outpost building where he leaned on the side until she was close enough to greet. "Having fun, babe?"

Watching Ben give the younger kids their treat, Lexi crossed her arms over her chest and smiled. The happy laughter was a balm for her aching heart but even in Bastian's eyes she could read the fear and relief that the last few years had dealt them all. Her little man had never known a time when war hadn't raged on the land and neither he or Simi had ever been able to play in a park or have carefree birthday parties like other children. They'd been to busy trying to stay alive to worry about those sorts of things. While the compound provided relative safety, there was always the chance that safety could be destroyed. Suddenly, the blond haired angel realized Max wasn't with them anymore and looked around with a frown. Putting a hand on Ben's shoulder, she leaned down and whispered.
"Kiddo... Can you keep an eye on Simi and Bastian for a bit? I need to find Max and talk to him...."
Knowing that Ben wasn't fooled, Lexi gave him a small smile and then turned to look for her handsome hunter who'd long ago stolen her heart. In her heart, she knew what she would find and a piece of it broke every time she saw the shell of the man she loved. In many ways, she blamed herself for bringing him so much pain but rationally knew it wasn't her fault. It simply didn't help though.
Moving away from the kids and the others, Lexi searched the shadows and then frowned. Moving towards one of the equipment buildings, she slipped around the side and spied Max sitting in the shade holding a bottle of vodka. As he lifted it to his lips and took a swig, the young woman stopped and felt tears gather in her eyes.
Gone was the once confident playboy who's swept her off her feet and in his place was a cold stranger who relied more and more on a bottle to get through the nightmare their lives had become. Instinct told her that each drink was just one more step closer to the moment she lost him for good and she didn't think she would survive that fate. Ever since that fateful night when their family had been savagely and brutally attacked, he'd slowly been slipping away from her and Lexi was very afraid that each mission would be his last.
"Max? Baby?" she said softly.
