Jo Jordan - Blair/Jordan Compound: HQ Building - October 2014Jo let Curse take Tellie, at just over one year old the little girl was still the baby of the family, at least for now. Tension filled the air and it didn't escape the children's attention. The twins flanked Ash, each one of them holding a hand. The three of them walked along in front of Curse and Jo.
Dropping the kids off with Maddie, Jo whispered a warning to her to be on alert. Then kissing and hugging each of the kids before she and Curse continued on their way to the main building. "Has anyone been let into the compound while we were gone?"
"Maybe its nothing... Maybe I"m just still hyped up about the mission.... I just can't help feeling like something is about to happen and I don't like surprises." Jo looked over at her husband as they walked. Shaking her head as he spoke to her. She thought for a few moments, trying to recall if there was anything out of the ordinary the last few days. But nothing jumped out at her. "The only people that came into the compound were the other team that was out on another run, they got in last night I think. Everything seemed fine with them as far as I know. Then your team came in today."
"Baby, I trust your feelings. We definitely need to check it out." Jo held tightly to Curse's hand as they walked into the compound headquarters. Jo stood by while her husband asked questions. Hearing about Shane having gone into labor caused Jo to feel a bit nervous. She put her arms around Curse's waist when he pulled her close to him. Doing her best to return his smile but her mind had drifted a bit at the thought of Trey and Shane welcoming another baby into the world.
Shaking off the thoughts of pregnancy, labor and babies Jo turned back to the man who was monitoring the security camera's. Giving him a look she spoke. "Who was the team that got back in last night?" The man looked at some paperwork on a clipboard before he responded. Telling them that it was another three man team that had been out for a few days. The names he read off were some of the newer residents of the compound, Davis Stephens, Randy Everts, and George Olsen. Jo nodded, she gave Curse a quick glance and shrugged. "Nothing seemed out of the ordinary when the came in right?" The man referred to the clipboard again. Shaking his head as he let them know that nothing strange had been noted. The team had dropped off the supplies they had acquired on their mission and everything seemed fine.
Jo let out a sigh as she heard her husband mumble. She could tell he was still uneasy and so was she. This was different than post mission winding down. Jo didn't like it at all. There was something going on. She knew it now too. Looking first to the technician and then back to her husband before talking again. "Since Trey has his hands full, I think we should find Derek. Check in with him. Maybe we need to do a sweep of the compound? Anyone know where Derek is at the moment?" Jo stayed close to Curse as she waited for someone to give an answer. She chewed her lip nervously. No, she really didn't like the feeling that was creeping over her now. Even though she knew that something was bound to happen inside the compound eventually. This was their safe haven, just the thought of there being some kind of threat within their sanctuary chilled her bones.

In a cabin across the compound, Davis Stephens woke with a violent headache. Holding his skull, he fell from this bed and barely made it to the bathroom before puking his guts up. Out in the hall, he heard his bunkmate moving around and when he looked up in the mirror George Olsen was standing in the doorway of the bathroom.
"Hey George.. Man, I'm sick... Must have caught something out there." he said, trying to clear his foggy head. "Are you sick too?"
When there was no reply, he glanced upwards only to feel terror stricken his heart. His friends eyes were no longer normal. They were pitch black and evil lurked in the depths.
"OH SHIT.." he said just before all lights went out and his own eyes flared and changed to ebony.

Walking away from her husband was the hardest thing Lexi had ever done but hanging around watching him drowned himself in liquor was killing her. Pasting on a smile for the kids, she gathered Simi up in her arms as the little girl quietly watched her and then took Bastian's hand. Glancing at Ben, she tried to hide her worry as she beamed at him and asked.
"Ok, I don't know about you all but I need a shower and then some good food. How about we go home and get cleaned up and then curl up on the living room floor and watch a movie? I bet Betsy would even make us popcorn!"
When the younger two children cheered, the beautiful blond angel gave a soft laugh and started in the direction of the house. However, before they were half way there, she got the feeling of being watched and started to scan the shadows without appearing too. A deep sense of unease was festering and she finally slowed to a halt.
"Ben.... Is Maddie home? I just thought of something I need to do real fast. How about we see if she can watch Bastian and Simi for a bit?" she asked, trying to determine the best course of action.
Since they weren't far from Maddie's house, they were able to cross the distance in little time and Lex was suprised to find the Jordans had just left. Immediately, her sensors went off and she placed the little ones in the teachers diligent hands before turning and hurrying towards HQ.
(Ben, I moved you a bit. Hope that is OK. You can decide if you want Ben to stay with the kids or go with Lexi.)

Shane was never so glad to see anyone as she was to see Helena walk into the bedroom. Letting herself relax just a bit, the petite blond gave a rueful grin and then let them help her get situated.
"Ok, this is the last time I am going through this!" she declared as yet another contraction hit and she held on to Trey's hand for dear life. "I think 6 kids is MORE than enough even if I didn't give birth to two of them!"
Breathing through the pain, she tried to focus on something else and gave Helena what was suppose to be a smile but she guessed turned into a grimace.
"Sammie might have won the delivery race but not by much! These babies seem to be of like mind. Hows she doing by the way? I'm so happy Sam made it back in time to be with her. She was so worried he wouldn't."
Knowing she was chattering like a magpie but unable to quit, Shane rattled on a bit more and then felt her eyes widen.
"Um..... Doc... I don't think this baby is going to wait much longer!!! "

((I can use one of the infected, right? If not just let me know)) ... Punch, kick, punch, punch, dodge. Again! Fists cut through the air with deadly accuracy hitting the punching bag with powerful blows in succession. Sweat dripped from his forehead, his knuckles were chaffed and bloody and his legs were about to give up from exhaustion. And the words of his wife kept replaying over and over in his mind, no matter how much he tried to silence it. Kick, kick, punch, dodge, kick. Again, again! The emptiness inside Max Blair had been filled with a burning rage and despair. He was a failure not only as a hero, but as a father and husband as well. He couldn’t save them, Mom, Nick, Mel, little Lydia. Hell, if he couldn’t even save little Lydia, what made him think he could keep his sons safe? Punch, punch, kick… again, again, AGAIN! As the last punch missed his target, his knees faltered and only hugging the punching bag did Max managed to avoid falling to the floor in an exhausted heap. With ragged breath, the weary hunter turned his head to the left in direction of a sudden noise sounded in the dark and supposedly empty gym. Standing there, he saw a familiar figure and sighed. “I’m not in the mood Davis, leave me alone…” the words were difficult to speak, even breathing was. And it was then that he noticed the dark pitch eyes on Davis and the knife in his hand shimmering in the dim light. Max had seen that look too many times in his life, the croatoan virus had a new victim, right there in their compound, the place that everyone believed to be a safe heaven. Without a warning, Davis lunged at him and it was only instinct that made Max move to avoid the blow as he struggled against the attacker. He was exhausted and his attacker was relentless, the hunter knew he wouldn’t be able to hold him back for much longer. So reaching out with one hand, he grabbed the first thing his hands were able to reach and heavy halteres smashed against Davis head, causing him to fall dead to the floor. Taking a few steps back, the hunter watched his bloodied hand in surprise and looked down at his stomach to see a bleeding deep cut in it. A quick look to Davis hand and he could see he still clutched to a now bloody knife. His legs gave up under the piercing pain and Max fell to his knees with a groan. He was bleeding profusely and about to lose consciousness. The last memory he was going to have of his wife was how badly he had let her down, and he refused to accept it even as he fell to the ground. Summoning a strength that was beyond his reserves, the hunter started to drag himself…but he knew it was a losing battle until darkness overcame him and he lost consciousness.

Nodding at his wifes suggestion, Curse suddenly felt the need to move. One hand went to his gun holster in an absent minded fashion to make sure it was there and secure before his eyes scanned the security monitors.
"Damn.... Yeah, lets find Derek. You guys keep your eyes open. I just don't feel right..."
Moving with a solider's efficency, the hunter was out the door and heading for the garage bunker before anyone could reply. He could feel Jo on his heels but he couldn't tell her anything more than his gut was boiling with a new fear. Half way there, he spotted Derek and Lani heading in their direction and he could tell by the look on the other man's face that he had the same feeling.
"SHIT" Curse swore under his breath. "Jo, Darlin... I need you to do soemthing for me. I want you to head back to Maddies house and stay there, all right? Ive got a bad feeling and we need to make sure the kids are protected. Will you do that for me?As soon as I know anything, I will come for you but... I don't know.... Maddie doesn't have the training you and I have and she is vunerable with those kids."
Giving her a hard kiss, the hunter hugged her tight and then released her.
"I love you."

Unknown to the rest of the compound. The three team members that had returned the night before had all been infected with the Croatoan virus. While they hadn't exhibited any signs of the disease they were let into the compound and all seemed normal.
Davis Stephens, Randy Everts, and George Olsen hadn't started to have any symptoms until the following morning. By then it was too late.
____________________________________________________
First is was Davis who had found his way to the gym. Running into Max Blair. Surprising the unexpected hunter while he was working his frustrations out on the punching bag.
As the same time, Randy Everts had been roaming the compound and now found himself watching from the shadows as Alexis Blair had just dropped off her children as we leaving the home/schoolhouse that was presided over by Miss Maddie Sinclair. Waiting until he was sure that the Blair woman had left and was no longer in the area, Randy crept closer to the house.
Meanwhile, George had spotted the young doctor Helena Nicodeu and followed her as she moved across the compound to the home of Trey and Shane Coulter. Watching as the doctor entered the house, he could smell the other humans inside. Driven by nothing more or less than blood lust, the infected man made his way to the house.
____________________________________________________
The compound that they had all worked so hard to keep shelter and safe was about to erupt in chaos. Even with all their security measures, they hadn't been able to keep out the threat that had now invaded their safe haven. Their home.

Wincing, Ilani couldn’t help the guilty expression that stole onto her face. Aw, great; he’d gone and smacked his head because of the noise her gun made. Now there was a cool ‘hey baby, I missed you today’ kind of present.
Forget thinking of you Hallmark cards! Go and find the biggest, loudest gun you can get your hands on and scare the living crap out of your man! Maybe, if you’re lucky, he’ll get himself into a coma…
With a roll of her eyes, she bit back the urge to smack herself with the butt of her shotgun. Mouth open to apologize- it only took 5 years, but she was finally starting to be able to spit the words out without growling too loudly- and confess that it was her new four gauge’s fault for the noise, she was definitely ready to make it up to the poor guy. Maybe throw in a back rub later, let him have the pick of what DVD would be playing on the tv tonight…
But hell if she was prepared to get shoved behind a brawny back so quickly that she had to hang onto his shoulder or plop down on her butt in the dirt.
“Weird? You mean, other than the normal big ball of quiet that’s out there in the fields? No, Derek, I didn’t notice anything outta the ordinary.”
Confused, but immediately on high alert as he reached for his shotgun, she felt her hand tighten against the grip of her own as she looked out at the seemingly peaceful land surrounding them. Nothing seemed as if it were about to jump out and eat all of them. There was still a bit of smoke from her target in the fields and it was so much more quiet than she was used to, even after five long years…but from what she could tell, everything was as it had been. Safe, quiet and, in some ways, blissfully boring.
Yet, when Derek went on edge, Ilani was sure that something was about to go down. She trusted his instincts- and, if she really wanted to be truthful, kind of envied them- without question, so when she spotted Curse and Jo talking a bit down the road, she nudged her mate and nodded in their direction before trotting over.
“Look, Curse and Jo. Let’s go see if there’s something up that my normal senses have no clue about.”

Jo Jordan - Blair/Jordan Compound: HQ Building to Maddie's Place - October 2014Jo started taking in some deep breaths. The uneasiness had just been ratcheted up several notches. Since Jo had been home and with the kids she hadn't had a weapon on her person. Looking at one of the men she asked for someone to go get her something from the armory.
The man ran quickly to one of the back rooms that held a variety of weapons. Returning he set a .45 automatic, extra magazines and a small holster on the desk. Jo grabbed the holster and strapped it to her thigh quickly. Picked up the gun she slammed one of the magazines in and pulled the slide back, chambering a round. Then she slid the weapon into the holster. The extra magazines slipped into pockets on the sides of the holster and she was ready to go.
When Curse moved out she followed without a sound. Her senses on full alert, her eyes scanning the entire area around her. Jo had shifted into her hunter/soldier mode and right now all that matter was finding the threat and keeping their family safe.
Jo gave a curt nod as she saw Derek and Lani approaching. She clenched her teeth as she saw that they didn't have their children with them either. Wondering if they had also left them with Maddie, as was pretty much normal for people with kids to do when they had things to do. Jo turned back to Curse when he spoke to her. "Jo, Darlin... I need you to do something for me. I want you to head back to Maddie's house and stay there, all right? Ive got a bad feeling and we need to make sure the kids are protected. Will you do that for me? As soon as I know anything, I will come for you but... I don't know.... Maddie doesn't have the training you and I have and she is vulnerable with those kids." Jo ran a hand through her hair and nodded. It was in fact exactly what she had just been thinking. Already thoughts of fortifying the school house along with Maddie's living quarters were drifting through her mind. Along with training Maddie up on a few things.
When Curse pulled her to him she wrapped her arm around his neck and kissed him back. As they parted she took a deep breath. "I love you too babe. Don't worry, I've got it covered." Giving her husband one last lingering look she turned and headed off toward the school teacher's place.
Moving quickly but quietly she stuck to the tree line instead of traveling along the path. Keeping her eyes and ears open for anything out of the ordinary. About half-way to the school house that also contained Maddie living area Jo froze. She had heard something coming down the path. Instinctively she ducked down behind a tree and waited. Watching. After a few moments a familiar blond woman came into view and Jo heaved a sigh of relief. Carefully moving out of the shadow of the woods Jo approached her friend. "Heya Lexi. Did you just come from Maddie's house? Something is going on. Curse sent me over to look out for Maddie and the kids. We don't know what it is yet, but something just seems off."
((I wasn't sure who was going to go with who... So if Ilani wants to go with Derek or go off with Jo that's fine either way with me.))

(DEREK USED WITH PERMISSION HERE!!)
Curse watched as Jo walked away and then turned to level a gaze on Derek. His emotion was locked down tight and the only expression on his face was one of pure intent. Giving Lani a nod, he quickly filled them in on what was going on and then rubbed a hand through this hair.
“I hate to do it but I think one of us better find Trey and let him know whats up. His wife is in labor but if something is going down… We might need him out here. Helena is probably with Shane and we need to make sure everyone is protected.”
Nodding, Derek agreed.
“I’ll head over to Trey’s now. Lani, why don’t you head over and check on the kids?” Glancing at Curse, he seemed to be looking for some verification as he continued. “I assume that is where Jo is heading since the munchkins aren’t along? Maddie has Kyrian and Haley since Lani and I were on duty today. ”
Nodding Curse frowned and rubbed his chin.
“I wish to hell I knew just what is bugging me. I don’t like this, Derek. I haven’t felt this sort of thing in awhile now. I’m going to go find Blair. I think I saw him heading towards the gym earlier. If my instincts are correct, we are going to need everyone on full alert. “
Growling, Derek flipped up his gun and checked the chambers before glancing at his mate.
“Babe… Your gun still loaded? I don’t want you taking any chances. You see anything out of order, you come get me, you hear? This could get bad fast….”
Turning back to Curse, he put the gun up against one shoulder and continued.
“You want all of us to meet at Maddies after I get Trey?”
Frowning, the sandy haired hunter thought for a long moment before nodding.
“Yeah… We are going to need to get our game plan laid out and decided what needs to be done. If its nothing then we’ll have been safe rather than sorry but that is better by far than the alternative. Now… I’m going to find Max and then I’ll meet you all at Maddies.”
Catching Derek’s quick nod, Curse turned and took off for the gym. He’d seen the dark haired hunter palm that vodka and he could only hope he wouldn’t find him drunk off his ass. His friend was dealing with a heavy load and the fact that he’d headed to work off some of that agitation was a good sign, he figured. Maybe Lexi had managed to get to him before the bottle had gotten the better of him. It was something they all faced from time to time but he’d seen Max’s head long spiral coming for a long time now. Ever since that fateful night when the angels had tried to take out his whole family and then he’d been forced to execute his own brother and his family. Curse didn’t really know how he’d stayed sane through it all.
Reaching the huge building, Curse threw open the door and stalked through the entryway towards the weight room. He had a feeling that he’d find the other man there slamming into one of the punching bags. As he stormed through the hall way, he glanced in every room until he reached his destination.
“Max? You here man? We’ve got trouble!” he yelled out before stepping through the door of the weight room. “BLAIR!!! Where the hell are you, man….”
As soon as he made it into the room, the scent of blood hit him like a ton of bricks. It was a smell he’d become to familiar with and the sight of two bodies on the floor sent him into a tail spin.
“SON OF A BITCH!” he snarled before realizing one of the bodies was his friend. “MAX!!!”
Tearing over to the man’s side, Curse noted all the blood and fear struck him hard. A quick glanced at the other man showed sightless staring eyes and half his head was bashed in. It was obvious that he was beyond hope and the knife laying discarded on the floor was all the evidence the hunter needed to know what had happened. Davis Stephans had somehow contracted the virus and attacked Max.
“AH HELL NO!!!” he whispered before falling to his knees and trying to gauge how bad his friend was wounded. “Max…. Max, man.. can you hear me… Come on buddy…. Don’t do this.. You better not be dead or I’m going to kick your ass….”
Rolling the hunter over, Curse was sickened by the amount of blood that had polled around his friend and his stomach clenched as he saw the damage. He’d put up a hell of a fight but the zombie had gutted him hard. In that moment, he knew the other man was beyond hope and a deep grief hit him hard in the middle. The position of Max’s body told him he’d tried to crawl to the door and call for help but Curse had been to late.
“GOD DAMN IT MAN!!! WHY THE HELL WERENT YOU PAYING MORE ATTENTION!” he rasped out as he tried to shake the man back to life.
Feeling frantically for a pulse, he cursed and swore to no avail. In the end, Curse was forced to acknowledge the fact that his comrade, drinking buddy and loyal friend was gone. For a long moment, he knelt by the body of the fallen man and struggled to contain his grief. They all knew that there was a chance they wouldn’t make it home when on missions but this compound was suppose to be their safe haven. The place they could come for peace and relative safety. Max should not have gone out like this. The warrior had just come off an extremely risky operation and he should have been home with his wife and kids. Just that thought made Curse close his eyes and pray. Lexi would have to be told and he had no doubt that the angel was not going to take it well. Ben was already walking a fine line and the hunter had left behind two small children who wouldn’t even have the chance to really know their father. Choking a bit, he reached down and closed Max’s eyes before placing his hand on his shoulder in a solemn promise.
“You won’t be forgotten, old man. We will see to it. Don’t you worry about a thing, you hear? We’ll all pitch in to take care of them.”
Getting to his feet, the hunter moved slowly towards the door, unaware of the blood that soaked his hands and front. His only thought was to find Jo and make sure the kids were safe before having to bring Lexi back to bury her man. Stiffening his shoulders, he pulled himself together and became the soldier once more.

Ben sat with Bastian and Simi, smiling as the talked and played around him. They acted more like he was a toy than a person, using him to hide behind and keep the other one away as they ran around, causing Ben to smirk momentarily as he watched them.
His smirk faded back into his normal look though, an almost scowl, as he saw Lexi appear. He saw her smile, saw Simi instantly run into her arms, Bastian taking her hand. He could see past the smile though, he could see right into the worry. Something was wrong. Of course, something was always wrong, but this time was different. It wasn't trouble like usual, it was trouble here, at home. Ben could feel the uneasiness in the air, and that just added to the worry he now saw in Lexi's eyes.
"Ok, I don't know about you all but I need a shower and then some good food. How about we go home and get cleaned up and then curl up on the living room floor and watch a movie? I bet Betsy would even make us popcorn!"
Ben watched Lexi closely, studying her. He was good at reading people, a skill he had been forced to develop to get over being the once trusting kid he had been. He could see through her false happiness, and part of him wanted to call her out on it, find out what was going on, but with the kids there, he wouldn't. Not matter how bad things were, he would never want those two kids upset, they were some of the most important things in the world to him.
Snapping out of it at the sound of the kids cheering at the idea of popcorn, Ben followed after the other three, gripping his bag closely.
Ben, always on edge, was glancing around as they walked. He hated feeling uneasy, and it made him very nervous, and a nervous Ben was a dangerous Ben.
Looking forward, saw his adopted mom slow down to a stop, and knew she felt the same way he did. Something was wrong.
"Ben.... Is Maddie home? I just thought of something I need to do real fast. How about we see if she can watch Bastian and Simi for a bit?"
Walking to her side, Ben looked at her, nodding lightly, glancing around them, every little noise tempting him to reach for his gun.
"She should be... I think that's a good idea..."[/b]
Arriving at Maddie's house, Ben nodded to Lexi when she left Bastian and Simi with them, leaning down to Bastian's level. "We'll be back soon, kiddo. Do what Maddie says, ya hear?"[/b] Smirking at the boy, Ben held back his uneasiness, then stood up, smiling at Simi. "That goes for you too."[/b]
Smiling at the little girl, he nodded to Maddie then turned to Lexi, sighing deeply, then followed quickly after head towards the headquarters, keeping pace with her the whole way.
Arriving there with her, he turned to look at her, giving her a serious look, his hazel eyes dark. "What's going on?"[/b]
Hearing someone, Ben jerked around, hand going to the holster hid by his jacket, but his hand lowered when he saw it was Jo. He hadn't even noticed her there, which made him feel stupid. If she'd been a croate or demon, he'd be dead.
"Heya Lexi. Did you just come from Maddie's house? Something is going on. Curse sent me over to look out for Maddie and the kids. We don't know what it is yet, but something just seems off."
Looking over at Lexi, he waited for her reply. Now he knew he wasn't just being paranoid. If him, Lexi, AND Curse and Jo felt something weird, then something was going on.

(Joint post by: Lexi, Jo, Ben, Ilani, Curse, Maddie) Blair/Jordan Compound: Schoolhouse - October 2014Lexi
Lexi couldn't help the sick feeling rolling in her gut but she couldn't put her finger on just what was causing it either. Ben seemed to feel it too so as they walked, she eyed the shadows and almost pulled her gun with Jo appeared.
Sighing with relief, the angel frowned as Jo started talking and then nodded.
"Yeah.. We just left Bastian and Simi there with the others. I'm with you guys on thinking something is wrong."
At the sound of footsteps, the blond glanced over Jo's shoulder and saw Lani approaching. Arching a brow, she recalled seeing Kyrian and Haley at Maddie's too and knew the other woman was probably going to check on her and Derek's kids too.
"Hey Lani. I take it your man sent you this way too?"
Ilani
Grumbling and constantly glancing over her shoulder, Ilani stomped her way up the road to Maddie's house. For all that was holy, if all of this was just some ninny's version of Mischief Night, she was going to shoot someone.
Catching sight of Lexi, Jo and Ben, she waved and hurried over.
"Yeah, he did. You guys know what the hell's going on? Derek just got a weird look on his face and BAM. Instant paranoia fest."
Jo
Jo shook her head in frustration. The feeling of dread was weighing heavy on her. The thought of her children in danger had her anger rising. As she was sure the other two mothers were having similar feelings.
Jo took another glance around them. She hated that she couldn't see anything out there. Whatever it was she wished it would just show itself so they could fight it. Jo looked over at Lexi, then Lani, then finally at Ben.
"Look Ben, you're going to have to go easy on this. Nothing reckless. You hear me? Our kids are in there. MY kids are in there. If they are already in danger I don't want to have to worry about it coming from you going off half cocked you got it?"
Jo let out a heavy sigh.
"I guess we should just get back to Maddie's. You just left there so everything seemed fine then right? I suppose we just go sit, watch and wait."
Ben
Ben stood back, watching the three women. He was anxious, he knew something was going on, but he didn't know what. He, like most others around him, had developed a sort of sixth sense. People in these times just knew when something bad was about to happen. Ben knew it. He could feel it. But, no one was really telling him anything, and it was pissing him off. If something was about to happen, he wanted to know what he was dealing with before hand.
Hearing someone finally speak to him, Ben turned to look at Jo, listening to what she was saying. Reckless? Half-cocked? Was she ACTUALLY insinuating that HE was gonna put the kids in danger?
"Um, Jo, no offense, but I don't think you have to worry about me hurting the kids, got it? I want those kids safe just as much as anyone else, and I would NEVER let anything hurt them, especially ME,"
he said, scowling at her. Whether she meant it bad or not, Ben took it that way. He didn't like anyone treating him like he didn't know what he was doing, it made him feel like a child, feel weak, and he hated that feeling. That's why he had suppressed all his feelings so much. They ALL made him weak.
Turning to look at Lexi, he sighed deeply.
"So, does ANYONE have any idea what is even going on? I haven't heard any alarms or anything. So, what's going on if it isn't a security breach?"
Lexi
Frowning, Lexi shook her head again and shrugged.
"I think the key here is that we DON"T know whats going on and we should use all precaution until we DO know. First .. Lets go check on the kids and then make sure Maddie knows whats going on. "
Turning on her heel, the angel strode back in the direction she'd just come from and there was a focused look on her face. As she walked, she pulled out her pistol and checked the chambers before tucking it back in the holster. Talk was the last thing on her mind as she paced the distance and then stopped on the edge of the trees overlooking the housing. Nothing at first stood out to her but Lexi could almost SMELL the evil on the air.
"Lani?? JO?? Either of you know if anyone came in or out of the compound while we were gone?"
she asked, her eyes scanning the out buildings.
Ilani
Hell, now that everybody was going into Defcon 10 and a half, a horrible feeling started to build in the pit of her stomach. Glancing at Ben when he swore his fealty to the kids' safety, she bit back the urge to bark 'yeah, he's okay, 'cause he knows we'd fillet his ass if he went stupid!' All in all, the kid wasn't too bad. And he'd definitely be on her cool list if he helped them with whatever hooplah was going on.
Letting the neck of her shotgun plop onto the curve of her shoulder, Ilani squinted at the road in front of them as she thought.
"Yeah, one of the scouting parties probably came in this morning, but I'm not too sure. I was around blowing up targets and doing the sentry-thing this morning. Why, Lexi? What're you thinkin?"
Slowly, what was a shimmer of dread turned into a full fledged fist in her stomach, and she felt her stride begin to quicken. There was going to be nothing wrong with Maddie's house, no baddies swarming the lawn; things were just as they'd left them this morning, and all this crazy paranoia was some kind of fluke. That was all. And hell, somebody was gonna pay in blood and body parts if things were any different.
Jo
Jo took a deep breath as she took off with Lexi continuing her way back to Maddie's. She was still a little worried about Ben, she knew he would never hurt the kids. It wasn't that she was worried about. It was just he'd become more and more unstable and aggressive. She just didn't want anyone jumping the gun. Whether he was trying to hide it or not, they had all noticed the changes in Ben. He wasn't the little boy he used to be. He wasn't even the teenager he should have been. He'd lost all that. Jo sighed softly at the thought. It really just wasn't fair. It was one of the reasons she tried so hard to shelter her own children.
When they stopped, Jo scanned the housing area with Lexi. When Lexi spoke she nodded, then Ilani mentioned a team that had arrived this morning.
"Well, Curse and I were up at the security center. The team that came in earlier today was probably Curse. Lexi and Max. They are all present and accounted for. But... There was a team that came in last night. According to the log, it was three of the newer guys. Uh... Davis, Randy and George I think their names were. Everything seemed OK when they came in. But I don't think anyone has seen them since last night."
Jo looked out again, everything seemed so quiet. But she knew very well that looks could be deceiving. She spotted the building that they used as a school. It was also where Maddie lived. Jo pointed it out to them.
"There's Maddie's place. It looks OK from here. I still think it would be best if we approached with caution. Maybe each of us flank around and take a side. Peek in a couple windows or something just to be sure?"
Jo shook her head... as if confirming the plan in her own mind. Giving the rest of the group a raised eyebrow look she waited for their agreement before she headed out.
Ben
Listening to Lexi's reply to his question, Ben felt slightly annoyed, not at Lexi, or anyone else specifically for that matter, but at the whole situation. They could all FEEL something wrong, all knew something wasn't right in the compound, but NO ONE knew what it was? Ben didn't like it. Not at all. Here he was, with three women who were all on edge, and somewhere, SOMETHING bad was waiting for them. He felt like a character from a horror movie, and the sad thing was, he felt like the cocky hero who always walked in on something horrible. That was the role that he had seemed to be placed in most of his life, but things had changed. He was no longer a kid, he wasn't sure what he was. 'No, I know what I am...' he thought. He was a soldier, a hunter. That's what he'd become, and whether anyone else liked it or not, that was who he was now.
Looking around at the others as they talked, he made mental notes of different points they made. They needed to check on Maddie and the kids, they needed to check in on this other group that'd come in, and they needed to figure out what the hell was in the compound. Following after them as they moved, Ben went over the list in his head, feeling like he was missing something. Where was Max? That was it. Where had he gone earlier? Sighing deeply, he figured he was probably off having more "alone time", and pushed the thought from his head, Now wasn't the time, not if something was about to happen at Maddie's.
Hearing Jo announce her plan, Ben nodded his head, thinking that sounded good. The idea of something being after Bastian or Simi infuriated him, but he was holding back for now. At least until he knew if they were all just paranoid after Lexi, Max, and Curse's worrisome tardiness earlier.
"Okay Jo, I think that sounds like a good idea."
Reaching down to where his holster was, he checked to make sure his concealed handgun was secure, then checked on his knives. He was still prepared form where he was gonna sneak out earlier that day, and now, he was glad he had been even more.
Lexi
As the other two women gave their reports, Lex frowned and watched the area. Her entire being was focused on the situation at hand.
"Three new guys came in and no one bothered to check them out? What the hell? Somebody fucked up and if this is what I'm beginning to suspect... There's going to be hell to pay."
she growled before listening to Jo's suggestion.
"That sounds like a plan. I'll go around to the back. Maddie usually uses that entrance for her private residence. Maybe Ben and I can get into the house that way and take a look around. Jo, you wanna take the front? "
Casting her friend a quick look, the angel frowned thoughtfully.
"Normally, I would walk up in knock but .... I think we better play it safe... I don't know why but my gut says something is going on in that house and its better to be safe than sorry."
Turning her gaze on the dark haired woman, Lexi almost smiled at the fierce expression on her face and was glad that Lani wasn't a hysterical mess. Then again, being mated to DeVoux was no picnic. She probably had to bit him back when he growled just to make headway.
"Ben... You come with me. You've got a radio right? Lets turn them down on low so we don't give ourselves away if we don't have too. You girls ready?"
Seeing their nods, Lexi took off swiftly for the back of the buildings. Skirting around one of the supply stores, she snuck up behind the school house and stood with her back to the wooden wall listening. When she thought she'd given the other two enough time, she got a hoot owl whistle and waited for a return.
Ilani
What? Go in all military-like? Ilani felt her eyelid twitch as her hand tightened around the shotgun's handle. Her babies were in that building, Lexi had a bad feeling, everybody was jumpy...and her BABIES were in that BUILDING that everyone wanted to approach with CAUTION. As if she knew the meaning of the damn word.
It was just oh-so-tempting to charge forward, kick down the front door and go all Scarface on the soon-to-be dead people that were supposedly causing trouble inside. Oh, how she'd love to make sure that they were kept alive. Fellow survivors or no, if she even saw a cut on any kids' freaking bodies, it was going to be all kinds of horror flicks down in the basement. And, lucky for her, she'd managed to score her a sadistic ghost who would love to give her pointers. Oh, lucky lucky.
But, casting a sideways glance at Lexi, she bit back the urge and trotted around the side of the house. Deep breaths, she told herself with a little growl. She'd seen enough cop shows- not to mention first hand- what happened when the good guys rushed in on cranked out baddies with guns. While the people inside threatening the kids- deep breaths, deep breaths- might not be drugged to their eyeballs, the outcome would probably be the same.
Keeping herself low, she hurried to the side of the house, gun in hand and eyes locked on some side windows. Now would be a great time to summon some of her ghostly-buddies...but hell, she didn't want to hear any bad news. She was playing nice and going the safe route...but if she saw any red when she peeked through that window, all bets were off and cue Whoopass Time.
Jo
Jo simply bowed her head slightly and started to move out. Making her way toward the front of the building. She moved stealthy across the expanse of area leading to the building. Trying to stay in the shadows when she could. Staying low when there was no other cover available.
Pushing down her emotions she kept herself calm. Shifting into autopilot. Recalling all of her hunter experience and everything that Curse had taught her. She had learned to be a pretty damn good soldier when she needed to be. And right now she needed to be. Maybe they were over-reacting, hopefully there would be nothing but playing laughing kids with Maddie when they got there. But she'd rather not take any chances.
When she got to the building she leaned back up against the wall. She heard Lexi whistle from the back and returned the whistle to let her know that she had made it into position.
Ben
Nodding to Lexi when she asked about the radio, Ben patted it.
"Yeah, I got it."
Waiting for Lexi to make her move, Ben followed after her, following her motions and keeping as hidden as he could, not wanting anyone that was there to see him. As they arrived at the wall, Ben watched Lexi lean against it and whistle, and listened closely for the return whistles. They had to do this right. If someone WAS in the school, then they couldn't let them know they were there.
Finally hearing the return whistles, Ben took a deep breath, turning back to nod to Lexi. It was time to make their move. Reaching down, he pulled his knife from it's sheathe, spinning it around then hiding it in the sleeve of his jacket, hidden from view if no one was there and it was all a false alarm, but easily able to be pulled out and used if there was someone there.
Closing his eyes for a second, he cleared his head, thinking about what was about to happen, trying to prepare himself for ANYTHING that could happen. It was his own weird way of planning ahead.
Opening his eyes, he looked back at Lexi, speaking softly, even quieter than a whisper.
"Ready?"
Lexi
Giving Ben a nod, Lexi silently felt for the knob on the door and was unsurprised when it opened silently. Maddie's' private chambers were separated from the daycare/School area so that she had some privacy but she always was available if needed. Easing inside, she tiptoed down the hallway and through the small living room that was decorated cozily in typical Maddie fashion. Glancing at Ben, she saw him focused and ready. Moving swiftly and silently, they came to the small passageway that lead to the other half of the building and Lexi dropped down into a crouch as the door had a glass window on the top half. Easing closer, she checked her weapon once more and then tried to peer into the room. From her vantage, however, she could see nothing but Jo's head starting to peek up to look in her window. Where ever the kids and Maddie were, they weren't in her viewing area.
Ilani
"You know, this is probably a bad idea..."
A voice next to her ear sounded almost as suddenly as she'd managed to regain a semblance of calm. Thank Whoever for all the surprises that she'd had to put up with in the past 5 years, or she'd have swallowed her tongue. Glancing sideways, she bit back a happy sound as she turned to see Cash looking sympathetically at her. As always, the ghost was dressed in his usual Renaissance garb.
"You guys being out here like this. What if there actually are bad guys in there? But, at least you aren't pretending you're Mad Max again. Let me reiterate myself when I say that mixing moonshine with gasoline was never a good ide--"
"Now really isn't the time for that, you schmuck,"
Mumbling under her breath, Ilani tightened her hold on her gun and inched around the window.
"Make yourself useful and go check to make sure Lexi, Jo and Ben are alright, then go inside the house. Now, Cash."
And color her surprised when the normally flippant ghost immediately disappeared to do as he was told. Half of her was storing the 'no nonsense' voice for future use, but the other half knew that when Cash's pain-in-the-butt hide was following orders, things had to be bad. Chewing on the inside of her lip, she slid down the side of the house and peeked through the lower corner of the window. Please, God, don't let there be bodies. Don't let there be blood, bodies or any of those other horrors she'd seen on the outside. Just let there be her babies, all safe and sound, watching a Disney movie and eating the cookies they'd stolen...
Clenching her teeth, she almost started bawling right there when she caught sight of a little butt waggling in the wind, as its owner tried to do a hand stand while others watched. Damn, she was gonna KILL Lexi if all of this turned out to be false. Better safe than sorry her frikken butt...
Jo
Jo looked up through the front window. There was nothing she could see from there except Lexi and Ben coming in through the back living quarters. Jo made a quick move down the side of the wall over to the side where Lani had taken up a position. A quick whistle and Jo waved for Lani to come down to the front with her. Then she moved back toward the front door.
Not waiting for Lani she turned the knob slowly and opened the door. Hoping that Lani would follow her lead and come in with her. Still on alert she walked into the front of the building. It was the area Maddie had set up as a school area. Looking around there seemed to be a whole lot of nothing.
She caught Lexi's eye and shrugged. Letting out a sigh she put her hands on her hips. Far from being out of the woods because where exactly WERE Maddie and the kids? Jo looked over and saw the stairs. She closed her eyes and knew they were going to have to go up there. Opening her eyes again she looked around at her companions and tilted her head toward the stairs. Before she could say anything else she heard a slightly muffled but there was still no mistaking the blood curdling scream. Then almost as if on cue a chorus of various screams and yells came from upstairs. That was all that Jo needed to hear. She pulled the .45 out of it's holster and bolted toward the stairs. Making her way up to the top. She stopped momentarily as there were several closed doors. Picking a door she ran to it and kicked it in. All stealth was forgotten now. The threat was real and it was there.
As soon as the door swung open Jo could see there was no one inside there. So she backed out of the room. Moving to the next door she repeated the process.
Curse
Curse was hurrying towards Maddie's house as his mind turned over the death of his friend and the complications that were no doubt going to arise because of it. He was faced with the knowledge that he was going to have to be the one who told Lexi about her husbands death and that was not going to be easy. Thinking to grab Jo and take her with him to find the angel, the hunter was a bit preoccupied as he approached the building and heard a scream rent the air.
Fear immediately filled him as he yanked out his gun and charged towards the school. The front door was open as he barrel through the entryway and his vision caught a blur of movement in the direction of the stairs.
"JO???"
He yelled out.
Ben
Ben moved in behind Lexi, staying low and staying quiet. He knew what to do, and that was keep quiet, which made him feel like his heart was going to explode each time he heard a sound as his biker boots came back down to the floor. He listened closely to everything, and the silence, the fact that he didn't hear any little kids giggling or running around, THAT was what scared him most.
Looking around the room, he felt the worry overtake him, the knife in his sleeve sliding down, the other being pulled from it's sheathe. Looking around, he watched Jo walk into the building, watching her closely. He could tell she was just as confused as they were.
Taking a deep breathe, he started to turn towards Lexi, but that's when he heard it. A muffled, but obviously terrified scream coming from up the stairs. Jerking around, he looked at Lexi, then he saw Jo take off, barreling up the stairs, and, his fear and rage taking over, he took off behind her. He could hear Lexi and Ilani behind him, but he didn't think about them, instead thinking about the kids, about Bastian and Simi. What was that scream? What was happening?
As he arrived up the stairs, his eyes got bigger as he saw the multiple doors around him, all closed. Where were they? Where was his brother and sister? Seeing Jo kick in a door, he stood back from another door, then raised his leg up, full-force kicking another door in.
Maddie
Maddie wasn't sure what gave her the first clue that something was wrong with the man standing across from her but something just wasn't clicking right with him. Pretending to go along with his desire to see the school house rooms and layouts, she whispered to Bastian and Jake to gather the other kids and lock themselves in the upstairs nap room. Luckily, several of the babies were already sound asleep and the older children didn't even hesitate to do as she asked. Moving slowly to give the kids plenty of time, the school teacher carefully kept her expression cheerful as she dilly dallied in the tour. She could practically feel the evil radiating off the hunter and it took all her self control not to bolt for the gun in the school supply closet.
When she could avoid it no longer, she lead the man up the stairs and down the hallway to the first two rooms. Barely giving him time to look in them, she went to the last door on the right and stepped through into her own office. Moving to the desk, she slipped her hand over the letter opener before turning to look at the man. What she saw, terrified her. The hunters eyes were no longer normal but a deep, ebony black. As she watched he pulled a wicked blade from his pocket and lunged at her. A blood curling scream was punched out of her as she tried to duck the blade but felt it rip deep into her side.
Praying for help, she swung her own weapon and hissed in frustration as she missed.
Another swipe of his hand and Maddie knew that her life was over. Her final prayers were for her innocent young charges across the hall.

Thing moved so quickly from the point of them entering the school house part of the building that Lexi couldn't later say what happened when. No sooner had she and the others glanced at each other in bemusement than a blood curdling scream rent the air and they were all moving toward the stair. Reaching the top just behind the other two women, she watched as one door was kicked in, revealing nothing and then she was moving to the next. Vaguely, she heard the sound of Curse's voice but the women were to focused to even react.
Everyone seemed to be thinking the same thing but the door Lexi headed towards was at the end of the hall and wide open. Jo was in front of her and before she could call out a warning, Maddies body fell out into the hall and they all stood staring at it in horror. Their friends throat had been slashed and blood flew everywhere as the murderer stepped out and grabbed Jo before any of them could react.
"SON OF A BITCH!" Lexi yelled, bringing her gun up but unable to get a clear shot as the man used her friend as a shield. "Ben!! Lani!! HOLD UP DAMN IT!!"
Heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs and she saw Curse join them just as the bastard laid his blade against the huntress's jugular.
"STAY BACK!! I'll kill her! I WILL!! I'll slit her throat jsut like I did that bitch on the floor!" the zombie screatched at them. "PUT YOUR GUNS DOWN!!! DO IT I SAY OR SHE IS TOAST!!"
Growling, Lexi looked at the others and lowered her gun to the side as she moved to the left slightly so that she was in front of the only other door on this floor. A babies soft cries vibrated through the wood and it was all she could do to hold on to her emotions.
"Easy..... Just don't hurt her! She has't done anything to you!" she said slowly, motioning for Ben to stay where he was.

(Joint post by: Lexi, Jo, Ben, Ilani, Curse) Blair/Jordan Compound: Schoolhouse - October 2014Curse
Moving swiftly up the stairs, Curse thought his heart would give out when he saw what awaited his eyes. Quicker than anyone could blink, the infected man grabbed his wife and pulled her close before angling a knife to her throat. Immediately, they all froze as they tried to determine how best to proceed. Lexi had positioned herself between the only closed door in the hall and the man while Lani had slide up to the entrance and now seemed to be working on getting inside to the screaming children.
Coming to a stop beside the blond haired angel, Curse's mind went blank of anything but the danger his beloved woman was in. As the zombie hissed and snarled at them, he tried to gather his wits and come up with a plan to remove her from the bastards grip
Jo
Jo didn't really have anything else on her mind except the safety of her children. And that meant she had to find the person who was a threat to them. So she kept moving down the hallway kicking in doors. So far all them had been empty and with every empty room she got more frustrated and more angry.
As she made it down to the end of the hall it barely registered just before she got there that the last door was open. She had her gun dangling down by her side and didn't even have a chance to bring it up because the next two things happened so fast.
First, Maddie's body came falling through the open door. Next a man came out the door and grabbed her. The knife was at her throat before she could even react. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly to calm herself. Then her eyes finally landed on her husband as he had come bounding up the stairs and down the hall, stopping dead in his tracks next to Lexi.
Taking slow shallow breaths Jo's mind started to swirl. Trying to think of what to do. She didn't really hear the voices that were going on around her at the moment. She was focused on what she could do to get out of this. She could feel the bastards hot breath on her neck and it made her even more irritated. As the man shouted out to the others Jo gritted her teeth.
Then in a low menacing voice of her own she growled back at him. "You son of a bitch... You picked the wrong woman to threaten. Go ahead, kill me. Do it. You think you'll get out of here alive if you do? You'd be dead before your knife finished it's stroke."
Jo knew there were at least four people in the room all armed that would take him down. On one hand, she was glad that it was her that he had grabbed. Not that she wanted to die or anything, but she didn't want anyone else in the room to die either. She'd gladly give herself up to save the others, knowing he'd never get away with it.
The only thing that bothered her and now started to go through her head was how much she would miss her husband and her children. She steeled herself against it though for the moment. She wasn't going to let the bastard see her cry. All she could do right now was look down the hallway and give her husband a look that she hoped he understood. Wanting to tell him how much she loved him. But she wasn't afraid to die.
Ben
As everything happened around him, Ben felt more like he was watching a movie than living his life. Everything seemed to be going so weird. All the strangeness in the air, then the tactical moves getting into the school, then someone screaming, all of it was so weird. so wrong. Bad things happened OUTSIDE the compound, not in it.
Kicking the door in, Ben looked around the room, growling angrily when he saw that it was empty. He was terrified right now, not for himself, not of what might be in the school with them, none of that bothered him. He was terrified over Bastian and Simi being in danger. Sliding his knives back into their sheathes, he reached down, pulling his 1911 from it's holster. Grinding his teeth from frustration, he looked around the room one more time, then turned and walked back into the hallway, moving to kick in another door. Before he could though, something happened. It didn't register at first what was going on, but he caught on quick.
Jerking around, Ben's eyes got huge as he watched Maddie fall from inside the room, her throat slit open, blood everywhere. He could feel his rage building as he moved down the hall, stopping in his tracks when he saw the man move out of the room, quickly grabbing Jo before anyone could react.
Raising his gun, he aimed at the man, his grip on the handle tight, his finger twitching as he prepared to shoot. He growled loudly, blinded by anger as the man screamed at them he would kill her. Ben could see what was happened. He had the disease, he was slowly turning into one of those bastards Ben had hunted down so many times. Knowing this, Ben wanted to kill him even more. Wanted to end him. Hearing the man command that they lower their weapons, Ben was hesitant at first, moving to move at the man, but seeing Lexi motion for him not to, Ben lowered his gun, glaring at the bastard holding his knife against Jo's throat. "You son of a bitch..."
Curse
Standing there in the middle of that hall, the hunter saw his whole life pass before his eyes. After having just faced the death of one of his oldest friends and now on the cusp of losing his wife, a deep, dark anger filled his soul. A familiar cool calm crept through his veins as he meet the man's eyes and promised death with just a look. From the corner of his eye, he saw Ben start to move forward and bit back a curse just as the boy stopped and lowered his own weapon. The hunter made a series of mental calculations as he inwardly groaned at JO's angry words and then finally dropped his gaze to hers.
Seeing the love shining out in her eyes, he took a deep breath and pushed away all uncertainty. The time had come to act.
"Darlin....... Now don't you go fainting on me, ya hear? We'll get you out of this." he said ironically before letting his eyes glint with intent. "Baby, do you trust me?"
Jo
Jo stood perfectly still. Her eyes glued on Curse's. The look on his face almost broke her but she knew she couldn't lose control now. When she heard his voice she had to close her eyes. Hoping it wasn't the last time she heard the familiar Texas drawl and the word that always seemed to make her insides melt, "Darlin'."
With the knife so close to her throat she couldn't nod her head, but she understood what he was saying. She blinked her eyes a few times, hoping he could see that she got the message. Of course she trusted him, she trusted him more than anyone on earth. This was something she was prepared for, putting her life in his hands.
Then in one quick move, needing to get the attacker to loosen his grip at least a little bit Jo stomped on the man's foot. It did what she needed it to do. Feeling the knife shift away from her neck even just slightly she let her whole body go limp and then fell to a heap on the floor. Her gun clattering onto the ground next to her. Then in another quick move she grabbed the gun so the bastard didn't get any ideas on picking it up, then she curled up into a ball on the floor. Then all she could do was wait.
Curse
As soon as Jo made her move, Curse was moving. Arcing his gun upwards he aimed and fired in the space of a heartbeat even as his wife dropped to the ground and curled into a ball. Several more bullets ripped through the air and the infected mans' body twitched from the impact of the lead. Vaguely, Curse thought he heard other guns besides his discharge after he'd already started forward but he was to focused on getting his wife away from harm to care. Before the body even hit the ground, he hand Jo scooped up and yanked away from the blood and gore. It was only by the grace of God that none of the infected material had splattered on her and it seemed to be all against the other side of the hall.
Glaring at the other, he started barking orders. "GET IN THERE AND GET THOSE KIDS OUT OF THERE!!! I WANT THIS PLACE EVACUATED AND THEN BURNED TO THE GROUND! WE CAN"T RISK IT SPREADING!!"
Holding his wife close in a tight hug, he finally set her down and went over her person with a fine tuned comb. Assuring himself she wasn't injured and none of the blood had gotten on her, he placed his forehead against hers before taking a deep steadying breath. Knowing they still had business to see too, he kissed her hard and then pulled back.
"We've got to get the kids out of here and away from the contaminated area."
Lexi
As soon as Curse spoke, Lexi knew what he had in mind and started praying. One little nick on Jo could be fatal with the infectious disease and it was risky no matter what way you looked at it. Jo seemed to read her husband's mind and then she went into action. With quick thinking, the huntress stomped hard on the man's inner arch and then dropped away from the blade just as her husbands gun came up and he fired a fatal shot that knocked the man backwards and away from the prone young blond. Lexi's own gun came up as of its own accord and fire a bullet that blew him back another few feet. From the side of her vision, she thought she saw Ben with his own gun but she knew the man was dead. Spinning on her heel, the angel realized that Lani had gotten into the room behind her and was trying desperately to calm a group of crying, screaming infants. Leaving Curse to check his wife over, she darted inside and then had her arms full of Simi with Bastian, Jake, Tessa and Kyrian glared fiercely with determined little soldier expressions.
"Ok little ones.... Listen to Aunt Lexi... I need you all to quiet crying and listen up.... We are going to get you out of here but we are going to play a little game while we do it! I want you all to close your eyes until we can carry you out, all right?"
Seeing several nods, Lexi sighed and then called to Ben.
"BEN!! I NEED YOU TO CARRY SIMI OUT!!"
Ben
The next few moments seemed to all happen at once. In one second, Jo was being held by an infected, knife against her throat, and then, in the next, she had stomped on his foot, and was on the ground. Ben wasn't sure what had happened next. All he knew was after he had blinked, the man was dead, and he had his gun raised, as did Lexi and Curse. Growling angrily, he looked at the body, tempted to shoot it again out of anger. He was brought out of his rage momentarily though as Curse barked orders to everyone.
Looking towards him, he watched him look Jo over, terrified that Jo might be infected, but he didn't take the time to wait and see. Instead, he turned and ran with Lexi, going into the room, his grip on his gun lightening and the gritting of his teeth calming when he saw all the kids.
Standing back towards the door, Ben looked at the kids from where he was standing, looking at the terrified and angry looks on their faces. He caught Bastian's eyes as he looked around, and seeing the terror hidden behind his glare, Ben felt his rage build back up. He NEVER wanted Simi and Bastian to have to go through what he'd been through, never wanted them to become what he had, and seeing the familiar hatred in Bastian's eyes that he saw every time he looked in the mirror, it made him want to turn and run out the front gates, hunt down and rip apart every croate on the planet.
He was so blinded by his rage, he barely heard Lexi speak, talking to the kids. It wasn't until Lexi yelled at him that he was pulled out of his mind, turning to look at her. "Simi? Okay..."
Taking the little girl in his arms, he sighed deeply, looking at her, seeing the terror in her eyes. "It's okay, darlin'. I'm gonna get you out of here, okay?" Looking to Lexi for confirmation, he waited for a moment, then pulling Simi close to him, he held her so that she wouldn't see Maddie or the Croate's body when they walked out. Turning back towards the kids, he looked at Bastian, motioning for him to follow him. "C'mon buddy, you're gonna come with me. I think Mom needs to help out Aunt Jo with some stuff..."
Waiting for the little boy to walk over, he pulled him close, covering his eyes as well, then turned back to Lexi, giving her a look. He wanted to get the kids out of there, but part of him knew this wasn't over. If one croate had gotten in, odds were there were others.
Sighing angrily, he turned from Lexi, moving from the room. "I'm gonna get them out of here..." With that said, he walked out, moving quickly, wanting to get away from the bodies as soon as possible, to get both the kids away from them.
Ilani
It was just funny how real life tended to resemble a B-horror movie at times. The day started off well, normal even, and ended up being the remake of an old cop show wanna-be. Time seemed to slow as the bad guy came out and took one of her friends as a hostage, the sudden appearance of her husband a dramatic addition. She could just hear the orchestra playing as the villain raised a knife to the woman's neck, as Curse exchanged that meaningful look with his wife, as the evil infected dropped to the floor like a stone...
Yeah, sometimes, fiction and reality seemed to blur into one big pile of crap-on-a-stick. Why couldn't today have been a Disney movie? Was it too much to ask for some frikken dancing teacups and a talking clock or two?
Ilani found herself standing still as she watched the would-be kidnapping unfold. Her hand tightened on the handle of her shotgun, but common sense made sure she kept the barrel pointed at the ground. One little shot would probably hit the both of them, and that was when using a normal gun. Something told her that leaving both friend and foe as little bloody spots on the walls, floor and ceiling wouldn't exactly be appreciated. The sounds of the children whimpering behind her made her finger itch to pull the trigger, and she couldn't help but inch forward, hoping that a distraction would give either hunter a chance to take the fucker out. Then BOOM, Jo stomped on the poor schmuck's foot, Curse took action and the house was suddenly as safe as it ever was...for the moment being.
Hot on Lexi's heels when the woman turned to hurry into the room, it was all she could do to keep from bawling right there in the middle of the floor. God, this was supposed to be a safe place; a place away from the chaos outside, where he kids could grow up safe and happy. Scooping Haley up into her arms, she hugged the girl until she squirmed. Fear, relief, disbelief, ANGER...what would have happened if Curse and Derek hadn't gotten some voodoo feelings and fanned everyone out?
Holding out her hand for the gaggle of kids that Lexi and Ben were lacking arms for, she did her best to unclench her arm from around her daughter and forced a smile on her face. "That's right, kids. We're gonna play a game. You guys are gonna close your eyes and hold onto each other's hands, and we're gonna get out of here right now. That's good! Just move forward, and I promise that Auntie Lani won't walk you into a wall. Ha, honey, I was just kidding. Let's go, guys." She said, following after Ben.
Jo
Jo stayed curled up on the floor. Making herself as small as possible. Hearing the hail of gunfire going on around her and just making a silent wish that she wasn't going to be splattered and drenched with infected blood.
When the deafening roar of gun blasts stopped Jo didn't move. She just kept trying to breath evenly. The next thing she knew Curse was there carrying her away to a safer location. After a few moments of just clinging to him tightly she felt him pull back a little. His hands moving over her body, shifting her clothing around. She knew he was looking for wounds.
Looking down at her own self she was amazed that there was nothing. Luckily she had escaped unscathed, at least physically. "I'm fine, I'm fine... Not cuts, not blood. I'm fine." She mumbled to him as he continued to inspect her thoroughly.
Resting her head against his when he leaned close to her. They had one stolen passionate kiss before they both knew they had to get back to work. Things needed to be done. Jo nodded when he said they needed to get the kids out. She sucked in a bit of a gasping breath. "My babies... are they all OK? All the kids? I wanna see them. Where are they?" Jo waited for him to respond and then lept up when she saw Ben, Lexi and Ilani leading the kids out of the area and down the stairs.
Curse
Pulling back, Curse closed his eyes for a moment and then let her go. Glancing sideways, he caught sight of Lexi, Ben and Lani leading the kids out and then gave Jo a gentle push after them.
As she moved off in front of him, he followed while mentally categorizing what had to be done. The place would have to be burned even though it about killed him to think of leaving Madison's body there along side the infected man as if she didn't deserve a proper burial. However, for the good of the compound, it couldn't be avoided.
Suddenly, memory of yet another thing invaded his peace of mind and he pulled JO to a stop as they hit the bottom of the stairs.
Waiting until the others were exiting the front doors, he looked down at her and tried to find the words to break the news to his wife about their friend.
"Joanna.... In a few minutes, I'm going to need you to be very strong..... Something bad has happened ... something besides here..... "
Searching her face, he continued.
"Max is dead..... He was killed over at the gym by another infected hunter... I found him right before I came here....."
Ben
Coming out the front door of the school, Ben turned back, kneeling down beside Bastian as he waited for the others. He wasn't sure what to do, he didn't want to wait around for someone else to get hurt, but he couldn't leave his brother and sister. Bastian, Simi, Max, and Lexi were the only family he had, and he wasn't sure he could survive without them. If he lost them, it would send him off the edge, straight into the darkness he'd been facing for so long.
Pulling the kids close to him, he watched the door as the others came out, his features stern, but his eyes full of worry. He still felt like something wasn't right, like something bad was going to happen.
Ilani
As the horrifying reality of what had just gone down began to sink into Ilani's head, she couldn't help but appreciate the finesse of a teacher. How did they actually lead kids in single file without losing one? Or walking one into a wall? Trying her best to keep her word, she let the kids down the stairs and out of the house after Ben. Haley had hidden her face in her neck, and the warm breath forced some of the tension in her stomach to ease. Her babies were safe, Jo and Lexi's babies were safe...
And two innocents lay dead on the floor inside the house behind them. One woman who'd done nothing to deserve her fate, and an infected who'd fought to save the world. Ah, Life. The cold hearted bitch-on-wheels.
"Alright, guys, you can open your eyes now. I know you want to see your Mommy, but I need you to stay here with me and Ben, alright?" As tiny voices spoke up, demanding maternal faces, she squatted down so that she was eye level with the kids.
Jo
Jo moved to follow the others and the train of children as they were lead down the stairs and out of the grotesque scene upstairs. She felt Curse walking behind her and it comforted her slightly, just knowing he was there.
As they got to the bottom of the stairs Jo felt Curse's hand on her arm. Pulling her gently back and stopping her. She watched as the other's went outside before she turned to face him. The expression on his face caught her off guard. She blinked in surprise a few times. When he started speaking a lump rose in her throat at the first word out of his mouth. "Joanna". There were only a few occasions when he called her that. One was when he was being especially affectionate and intimate with her, the other was when he had some extremely serious to tell her. She knew at this moment it was something serious.
She took in a deep breath and held it. What he was saying... telling her to be strong... something was wrong... very, very wrong... Once again she found herself steeling herself for bad news. Forcing back down the emotions that wanted to burst out of her. She didn't now how much more she could take right now. She had learned to turn off her emotions for the most part when she was in her hunter/soldier mode. But as of right now the danger had past so she was more in her worried mother and loving wife mode. She really wanted to get this nasty business over and done with and get her kids and husband back home. But apparently something else had happened and it was going to put a bit of a damper on that she could tell already.
When Curse finally got the dreaded words out her jaw dropped and a very audible gasp sounded. Her hand quickly flew up to cover her mouth and there was no way in hell that she could push her feeling back down now.
Without even being aware of it tears streamed down her face. The breath caught in her throat and she choked on the sobs that suddenly over took her. "Max? No, not Max... This can't be happening." She was barely able to whisper the words... struggling to understand what Curse had just told her.
Instinctively she wrapped her arms around her husband and pulled herself against his chest, taking several moments to just cry into his shirt. Then thoughts started flooding her mind. All kind of thoughts. Various emotions flitted through her head. Anger, pain, sympathy... then finally guilt. The guilt was the worse because of the thought that went with it. It flashed through her mind, relief... Relief that is wasn't Curse who was dead. She swayed on her feet as she looked back up at her husband. "Damn it... It could have been you Curse. Oh God, what's wrong with me? My best friend's husband is dead and my first thoughts were that I'm glad it isn't you. What kind of person am I?"
Jo tried to get a grip on herself. She was stunned and shocked. Suddenly she felt sick to her stomach. Fighting back the urge to throw up. Curse's words came back to her. He needed her to be strong. Yeah, great job of being strong she was doing right now. She shook her head to try and clear it and started to wipe at her face with her hands. Pushing the tears away. Using the sleeve of her shirt to dry her cheeks.
Finally.... She took a huge breath in and let it out slowly in a heavy sigh. Willing herself to think straight. A couple more breaths, in and out. "OK... What do we do? How do we handle it? We have to tell Lexi... and Ben... This is going to wreck them both you know and Ben's already about to fall off the edge."
After another few moments of just holding her husband tightly she let go and took a step back. She closed her eyes and flipped the switch. Shifting herself back into her hunter mode for the moment. Adjusting her facial expression, making it a blank slate. Not wanting to let her face let anyone know something was drastically wrong until it was time to deliver the bad news.

"Max? No, not Max... This can't be happening."
For a moment, Curse’s own grief bubbled to the top and his hands tightened on his wife’s shoulders. However, trained soldier that he was, he closed his eyes, took a deep breath and forced it back down. He had to be strong right now because Lexi and her family were going to need them. While this would be tough on all it could very well be the breaking point for the Blair family. Max had been the reason Lexi lived and breathed and Ben had hero worshiped his adopted father. No matter how he looked at it, the hunter knew hell would have no wrath like the power of an anguished angel and a traumatized teenager.
"Damn it... It could have been you Curse. Oh God, what's wrong with me? My best friend's husband is dead and my first thoughts were that I'm glad it isn't you. What kind of person am I?"
Pulling his attention back to his wife, the hunter hugged her hard and nodded.
“Yeah… It could have been.. but it wasn’t. I could have lost you upstairs in less time than it takes a heart to beat but we are both still alive and able to love each other. It doesn’t make you a bad person.. It just makes us human…. And damned lucky.”
As Jo pulled back, he was grateful to see her pulling herself together. He was going to need her cool, level head in the next few minutes.
"OK... What do we do? How do we handle it? We have to tell Lexi... and Ben... This is going to wreck them both you know and Ben's already about to fall off the edge."
Nodding, Curse took her hand and moved towards the door. His mind was working and as they stepped out into the sun he could scarely believe it had continued to shine even through the horror of the day. Keeping his voice low, he looked at his wife and replied.
“I’m going to take Lexi aside first. I want you to stay with Ben just in case I can’t control how Lexi reacts. She deserves to be the first to know and we both know what can happen when she loses control. I don’t want anyone else near us .. especially any of the kids… After I’ve told her and we determine how she is going to react, then the call will be hers in what and when to tell Ben. I doubt she is going to be in any shape for that though. I’m hoping Bastian and Simi will help keep Ben from going off but its not going to be pretty any way we handle this.”
